Christopher Nolan Talks INTERSTELLAR Influences

Ever secretive, the Dark Knight trilogy director doesn't actually reveal any plot details for his next sci-fi flick but when asked about it by EW in an article on Stanley Kubrick, he does reveal that the legendary director is an influence..

So far all we know about Christopher Nolan's upcoming Interstellar is that it will star Matthew McConaughey and involve wormholes and alternate dimensions, and although EW ask the director about the project in their excellent article on the lasting influence Stanley Kubrick, it looks like it's gonna stay that way for a while longer! But, Nolan does name a few sci-fi movies that he may well be looking to for inspiration. "I think anytime you look at science fiction in movies, there are key touchstones. Metropolis. Blade Runner. 2001," Nolan continues. "Whenever you’re talking about getting off the planet, 2001 is somewhat unavoidable. But there is only one 2001. So you don’t want to get too near to that." Nolan goes on to talk about his love of Kubrick - and 2001 in particular - going so far as to say that some of the late director's imagery makes him "embarrassed" with his own work.

"You look at the [bone-throw] cut in 2001, this vast jump forward — the confidence that takes to do that is actually enormous. Would I love to do things like that in my own work? Yes. But I don’t think I have the confidence to do that. Which is why there is only one Stanley Kubrick. I do believe he is inimitable. But you can be inspired. You can be inspired to aspire to be that confident."

Sounds like Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece will definitely be on Nolan's mind when he goes to shoot Interstellar, and if you're going to take inspiration, take it from the best! I actually enjoy films that take their time and focus on one impression at a time. In an age where the average moviegoer's attention span is close to non-existent it's nice to see that someone still values Cinema as an art form, a painting to be enjoyed visually, instead of reducing it to a toy commercial with sensual overload.

At the end of the movie, everything is revealed to be taking place in the mind of a child holding a snow globe.

I thought the ending of 2001 was the astronaut had ascended to the same species as the aliens that made the monoliths. Nolan for me is hit and miss I enjoyed his Batman movies but inception is way overrated and The Prestige was average.

The irony of Nolan haters actually overrating Nolan even more by writing their hate for him everywhere.

First off I'll just say I cant wait to see this movie, even though it stars Matthew McConaughey; I'll progress.
Secondly this has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY!! I had to put it in capitals so the hater could understand that. I mean the man makes a movie that has nothing to do with you guy's beloved Batman trilogy, and yet people are still criticizing him. Just let the man be.

Nolan is the master of Plotholes so I guess Wormholes should be a natural fit for him.

And Nolan inspiration for TDKR: Depression and boredom.

Prestige was a good movie if this movie is any where near as good as that then it will do okay at the box office.

@nomis you're not serious, are you?

I mean, don't get me wrong, Chris Nolan's made some of my favourite movies, and he was a key inspiration for my own aspirations of working in film, but "The last, best hope this industry has left"?! I'm sorry, but I think even Nolan himself would agree that that's rubbish.

Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Francis Ford Coppola, Sophia Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, Danny Boyle, The Coen Brothers. All those directors, just off the top of my head, are at least as good as Nolan.

Chris Nolan is amazing. I think, in fact, he could be regarded as a cinema legend in the future. I think you could even say that he helped the superhero film genre survive and grow with his first two Batman films. But to say he's the 'last and best hope' of the entire film industry? Stop putting him on such a ridiculous pedestal!

Anyhoo, I'm cautiously looking forward to Interstellar. After The Dark Knight Rises, I'm not falling into the trap of assuming Nolan can do no wrong. Plus, I'm not too keen on McConaughey, but Nolan has this uncanny ability to pull incredible performances out of his cast. He's definitely an actor's director.

Plus, I guess it bodes well that Interstellar is one of his more original works. Hopefully, this film will bump up his filmography to 8/9 great movies, and make up for what I thought was a rather disappointing release with The Dark Knight Rises (pretty good movie, but doesn't hold up to any of his other work).

@nomis sorry if that rant seems a bit OTT, more aimed at whoever made that image than at you.

Kubrick is pretty fu.cking amazing especially 2001 which is ridiculously good a proper masterclass, however Blade Runner is the finest Sci Fi film ever made. The directors cut is perfection. I cant wait to see what Nolan does with the Sci Fi genre, Prometheus promised a return to intelligent philosophical Sci Fi, Interstellar will deliver it.

I hope casting is similar to Star Trek TOS where people of many different ethnicities and races come together to explore the realms of space instead of a multitude of white guys.

kubrick was a master. 2001 is a masterpiece, in fact kubrick has made a few masterpieces that most tend to ignore/forget/goes right over thier heads (looking at you michael bay generation) such as paths of glory, barry lyndon and lolita. watch kubricks careful direction and james masons incredible performance in lolita and wonder why that work is so overlooked or eclipsed by its controversy.

as for nolan, i get people didn't like tdkr but i did so i ready for whatever he throws at me.

Acira, bravo my friend, for being one of the few who criticizes TDKR in a respectful manner. Though, I personally think it holds up fine with the rest of his work.
