BOX OFFICE: EDGE OF TOMORROW Debuts At #3 In North America; Hits $100M Worldwide

Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow hasn't been able to top Maleficent and The Fault in Our Stars this weekend, but with a decent debut, it has already passed $100 million worldwide. Read on for details!

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

It's obviously a shame that Edge of Tomorrow hasn't opened bigger in North America, and the reasons behind it falling short aren't really clear. Either way, it's a fantastic sci-fi movie (you can read my review by clicking here) and with any luck it will continue performing well overseas!

Starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riely, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda, and Tony Way,
Edge of Tomorrow opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on June 6th.

I always like Josh's hilarious write ups, that make the flame wars. It's hilarious because the complainers are the ones that make him money...

Good stuff Josh ;P

Yeah, it kills me that a sequel with a $250 million budget (and I'm pretty sure that doesn't include marketing costs) has barely passed the first instalment at the box office. LOL.

With its inflated budget, eot will need to gross at least $330-350m to break even. Gonna lose a lot of money me thinks!!!

Emily Blunt should play Hawkgirl in Batman v Superman.
Joel Edgerton should be cast as Dr. Strange..

Edge was OK. No real complaints. As for alien vs human war movies I liked Battle Los Angeles far more.

Remster, why would Josh continue to beat a dead horse. I gave you this link before, but I'll just put it out in the open so it's easier to digest.

SONY has ruined the franchise. They've absolutely cannibalized a "guaranteed" box office money maker. Embarrassing. Fucck you SONY.

1 Spider-Man Sony $553,098,600 $403,706,375 5/3/02
2 Spider-Man 2 Sony $478,863,600 $373,585,825 6/30/04
3 Spider-Man 3 Sony $389,357,700 $336,530,303 5/4/07
4 The Amazing Spider-Man $268,093,100 $262,030,663 7/3/12

Sure Spider-Man is down for North America but it has made over 500m international.
North America isn't the world.

I dont know why the Studio decided to release it during the overcrowded summer season. Its gonna get lost in the pile and forgotten. Looper had great reviews and it couldnt even break 100 million.

I can see a big Disney movie with Angelina Jolie still being top earner.
However, that sappy film about a sick girl beating a great action film like Edge, during the summer?
That's crazy..don't get it. People need escapism at movies not sad story crap.
