Season 2 of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous hit Netflix this week and continues to dive deeper into the mega-franchise that has evolved from Jurassic Park. What was once a simple novel by Michael Crichton has taken on a life of its own, to the point that there is now an animated series which skews towards a younger demographic.
Despite being animated, it is clear that Camp Cretaceous very much takes place in the same world the likes of Jeff Goldblum and Chris Pratt's live-action characters inhabit. We brought this up for discussion when speaking with showrunner Scott Kreamer, and he explained how they go about mapping out the entire Jurassic World franchise to make sure they can keep things entirely in canon when it comes to time placement and even the dinosaurs used.
You can hear Kreamer talk about the process of staying in canon with the Jurassic World films below, with this portion of the transcript included.
"I mean, season one is basically Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern Are Dead during Jurassic World. So that was very much like a puzzle figuring out where our characters could be during the movie where we're not breaking canon, but where we can intersect, whether it's finding Zach and Gray's gyrosphere or wherever we were at when the indominus breaks out. We were very hemmed in with that timeline, and hemmed in makes it sound like it was bad. It was a blast to figure out.
It was literally mapping everywhere, going, okay, well, the indominus is here. Oh, and Claire's there. Where can our kids be when Masrani's helicopter goes into the aviary? So that was really fun. Now, season two is a whole new game. It starts a couple of days later. And now it's really leaning into these characters, and we get to see new dinosaurs. We get to see new parts of Isla Nublar that haven't been seen in the show or any of the movies. And it's just getting to explore and see where we can go in exciting and interesting ways."
