INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Going Ahead Without Will Smith

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Going Ahead Without Will Smith

Director Roland Emmerich has revealed that Will Smith’s character will not be making an appearance in ID4 2 for one simple reason. Find out why after the jump.

Apparently it’s all a matter of finance stated Emmerich, turns out Will Smith is now too expensive to return to the franchise that launched his career into superstardom in 1996.

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," said Emmerich. "It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new,"

So there you have it, Will Smith will be absent from the sequel (tentatively titled ID Forever Part I) due to hit in the US Summer of 2015. How do you feel this will impact on the much delayed followup? Sound off in the usual place!

This is not a movie they should make a sequel for. The original film had a great ending, and that should be it. I challenge hollywood to make something other than an alien invasion for once

Meh. He won't be missed.

Kinda fail. Without a consistent character element, the film is just another movie similar to everything else. The aliens in the original film had no presence and it was the cast that made it fun. Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum would sell the sequel. They better have something really unique planned.

So what you are saying is that this movie might stand a chance of being good.

There should not be a sequel the original was amazing on it's own.

I am sure he will do it if they put his son and daughter in it!

Probably for the best, since he comes as part of a package deal with his son now.

This is a ploy to get Smith to negotiate a lesser fee. They need him in this to make money and he needs a hit. let press negotiations begin.

Bah...Will Smith doesn't need the money. He is cashing in on "After Earth." Right? **crickets are heard** o_0

He'll do it but only if his son can be Bill Pullman.

Probably as good. If ID are to have sequels 16 years after the first movie. It is probably best then to approach it as a "new start", a "restart" of a possible franchise.

But it will probably end up like Prometeus, better to leave the origin of the aliens in mystery then trying to explain all and everything. Same goes with this and District 9 etc.

Terrible title, unnecessary sequel concept, and no will smith makes me have no interest at all in this film.

@poop23: WTF? Hollywood makes approximately 200 movies a year and not even half of them are alien movies. Stop living inside of a box.

Only need Jeff Goldblum..he's very good in his film roles & isn't an obnoxious ass like Will Smith.

@sameoldthing is right. Goldblum is all we need. Will Smith is box-office poison these days. Plus, Jeff was the real hero of the original film. What did will do? punch an alien and walk alot?

ComicFan523 - 6/23/2013, 6:32 AM
I don't know how necessary this movie is either. In the first one they said it was the whole civilization that goes from planet to planet so is this a new alien civilization or something? Well I liked the first one so I'll see this with or without Will Smith in it.

Goodblum is really all they need. Will smith will be alright he still spending MIB1 money. Would like to see him in it but he isn't needed. This does sound like a negotiating trick, though.

Too expensive? After the movie After Earth, I think his price tag can come down a few million.

@supermarioworldE, are you serious? The best line in the whole movie is delivered by Goldblum, and I quote: "Which part...?". His delivery of that one line is perfect. Actually, I'm gonna watch it now just to see that. Bye!

@DanU: well if the price tag was particurarly high (which seems to be the case) just a few millions don't do much good.

CrimsonFlash

If will smith keeps making bad movie choices he's gonna see his star power drop. I can see this movie being an easy hit. after his recent movie he should take this movie for less money
supermarioworldE
supermarioworldE - 6/23/2013, 7:34 AM
@PeterDarker

I liked Goldbloom's shtick as well, but I don't think it'd be as funny without Will playing off him. Though I admit the material wasn't doing either of them any favors.
