REBEL MOON: Zack Snyder Hits Back At Claims He's "Delusional" After Saying It Would've Made $1.6 Billion

Earlier this year, Zack Snyder shared his belief that, based on Netflix viewership, Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire would have beaten Barbie at the box office. Now, he's responded to the backlash...

Doing the rounds to build excitement for his Rebel Moon movies, filmmaker Zack Snyder made a bold claim when he talked to Joe Rogan about the potential box office success of Part One: A Child of Fire

He reasoned that, had the movie been released in theaters, it had the potential to earn more than Barbie

Reflecting on A Child of Fire's success on Netflix, Snyder explained, "Say right now, [Rebel Moon has] like almost 90 million views...80 or 90 million accounts turned it on, give or take. They assume two viewers per screen, right? That’s the math..so that’s 160 million people supposedly watching; 160 million people at $10 a ticket, that’s $1.6 billion."

"[Barbie made $1.5 billion.] So more people probably saw Rebel Moon than saw Barbie in the theater," he continued. "That’s how crazy Netflix is - that’s the distribution model that they’ve set up."

While Snyder was seemingly just making a point about the reach Netflix has compared to traditional big screen releases, it didn't take long for people to point out that his math was off and how it was borderline delusional to think Rebel Moon would ever make that much money.

Talking to io9 (via SFFGazette.com), the Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver director was asked if he was saying that theatrical distribution is no longer as important as it once was.

"Oh, no, I would say it’s kind of the opposite," Snyder explained. "What I was implying was, well, there are two things. One is I was just going by the numbers that I was given by Netflix. People are like, 'Oh, well, Snyder’s crazy' but literally I just am doing [math] with this, not anything else. If now we’re close to 100 million viewers, 100 million views times two is 200 million views."

"So, people are like, 'Snyder’s delusional,' and I am just like 'I don’t know what to tell you.'"

"Who knows what [Barbie’s] done on Max and all that," he added. "The cultural significance of Barbie was happening when it was in the theaters. That’s when we all took a bite of the Barbie apple, and happily. And so my only point is that I think there is a theatrical zeitgeist [and] even though maybe more people have eyes on something, the actual sort of cultural significance is dictated still by the theater."

It appears Snyder doesn't believe Rebel Moon was a bigger hit than Barbie after all, though it's important to note that Netflix often counts just a few seconds of viewership as a "view," meaning the figures they gave him were likely way off, regardless.

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire has 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the sequel - Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver - has earned a dire 17% since hitting Netflix last Friday. Barbie, on the other hand, sits at 88%.

Problem is you're assuming all those people would've been willing to pay the flat fee of $10 per person in theaters. That's a huge difference compared to being free with the monthly subscription and allowing any number of people to watch it with you at no charge.

This is simple economics. Adding cost is gonna disincentive people from watching.

@Origame - right. I watched it on Netflix because I already had Netflix, but I wouldn’t have paid to go see it in a theater.

@Origame - Not sure where you live, but I don't even pay $10 for a matinee. Not to mention if you go to Imax or a theater with recliners. Easily $20 a pop or more.

I love the way he lives in his own bubble at times.

Batman & Superman together on the big screen for the first time couldn't crack a billion but he thinks RM could of? 😭😅

@DeadClunge - Yup, I mean I get the math of it but not how it ever realy works in practice cos the point being that maybe checking out the first 5mins of something never means you would ever have considered going to the cinema to watch it. If anything we are in a time now where even movies a LOT of folk DO want to watch don't do well at the box office cos most tend to wait to stream in most instances. That isn't me saying there wasn't folk who did want to watch the films, just that I suspect streaming views for everything is a LOT higher than ticket sales these days with typicaly those passing a billion being more about some repeat viewing than entirely reflective of the number of people going to see it on the big screen.

I haven’t watched rebel moon and I don’t intend to. I’m a Synder fan but the irony is his best work has been adaptations of existing IPs. Anytime he makes a film based off his own writing it doesn’t end well. It was no brainer to skip this movie. In regards to the movie grossing a billion and using barbie as an example he’s actually right. However a movie has to be at least enjoyable, it has to meet the bare minimum in entertainment value, it also benefits to have replay value. This movie and sucker punch have none of those merits but disposable movies like transformers, fast n furious & barbie meet the basic standards.

@TheMetaMan - I'd go a step further and argue even with adapting existing IPs he struggles when he has more creative freedom. Watchmen and 300 were both based on limited comic series, while Dawn of the Dead was a remake and he didn't write the screenplay. Most would say those are his 3 best films.

Meanwhile DC has decades worth of stories and characters, and for the cinematic universe he crammed in too much too soon. I enjoyed Man of Steel but it has flaws. But Batman v Superman had too much going on. Introducing Batman, Wonder Woman, and Lex, Batman vs Superman, death of Superman, etc. You could partially blame WB for trying to play catch up with the MCU but it doesn't sound like they forced Snyder to include so much in the second film of a planned cinematic universe.

Outside of those, IMO Sucker Punch was a mess, Army of the Dead was lackluster, and I'm waiting for the Rebel Moon extended versions to be released before I check them out, but expectations are low.

I was handing out free porno DVDs of me and my wife yesterday.

I went out with a case of 'em. 500. Gave every single one of them away. Some were like 'um, no thanks' but most were like 'sure, [frick] it, why not?'

Porno DVDs go for $50 each.
500 x $50 = $25, 000.

If I were selling those DVDs for $50 each, I would have made $25, 000 that day.

...right?
Every single one of those people who were like '[frick] it, why not?' would have paid me 50 bucks if I had asked them. That wouldn't have changed their minds about taking the free DVD at all.

"Literally I just am doing [math] with this, not anything else."

Clearly Zack did not excel in math. It is so bizarre the following he has amassed. What is it about him that attracts these people. I like a couple of his films but on balance he is a horrible story teller. The best thing that Snyder can do for himself is just adapt other peoples stories and stop trying to create new ones.

It's important to remember that Zack Snyder just... he just sorta talks without pre thinking anything out... He just sorta talks, and keeps talking in the hopes that eventually people forget the initial question and will just be satisfied with him saying words for a few minutes.

So... If you as the reader are attempting to have any semblance of a rational take away from his interviews... Well I mean there aren't even rational take aways from the majority of his films, so his interviews aren't any different.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/23/2024, 11:49 AM
Well, he's not wrong about his math about how many people watched the movie. The delusional part is assuming every single one of them would've gone to the cinema for this, while most people probably only watched it because they had Netflix

I definitely don't think Rebel Moon would make that kind of money in theaters because of the reviews. Even though I thought Parts 1 and 2 were enjoyable in spite of what the knucklehead nerds will say.

I've implied it before, though I'm stating it outright now: Zach Snyder is out of his mind.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver is not good (nor was Part One) and I'm thinking of preparing a video review illustrating why.
