Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the recent cinematic reboot of the franchise, recently teased that the upcoming
Star Trek sequel has up to three scripts in the works. Speaking to
Entertainment Tonight, Quinto explained what's going on with Paramount’s
Star Trek film series. First teasing Quentin Tarantino's in-development script:
First of all, I think there’s a couple of scripts. Because there was a script being written before Quentin Tarantino came up with his idea for a potential film. And so I think they are kind of developing more than one. So I don’t know what is going to happen. Quentin is off doing another movie. So, I feel like we are in a state of anticipation.
Quinto then confirmed that there are upwards of three scripts being written for the upcoming sequel and beyond:
All of us are really excited about the idea of working with Quentin on a Trek film, but I know Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, who wrote the last film, are writing a script and there are another set of writers writing a script. So I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.
To clarify the actor's statements; The Wrap reports that Pegg and Jung are in fact writing a potential script, as are Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. The latter pairing wrote the initial draft for Star Trek Beyond, before Pegg and Jung came on board to give the script a final polish. McKay and Payne were announced as screenwriters for the next film in 2016. Early rumors suggested the plot centered on Pine’s Captain Kirk teaming up with his father, played by Chris Hemsworth.
Paramount confirms to IndieWire three different scripts are being developed for the next Star Trek film. The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith is penning Tarantino’s script as the director gears up production on his ninth feature, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
