I was a little disappointed when I heard that J.J. Abrams was directing Star Wars Episode VII. And while some of my disappoint came from the sake of Star Trek 3, I was more disappointed that Disney didn't take the path of Joe Johnston.

First off, Johnston has worked on all three of the original Star Wars films, as the art director and effects producer. Not only that, but he worked on The Ewok Adventure, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, and Star Wars: Droids. He knows Star Wars backwards and forwards. And even more importantly, he knows the creatures of Star Wars backwards and forwards. This brings me to another point:

He knows his way around visuals. He made Captain America: The First Avenger, which was was set in the 40s, still look good visually. He also made Jumanji and Honey I Shrunk The Kids, The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III, and did the effects for Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom and Battlestar Galactica. He could make Star Wars look amazing, visually.

In my opinion, Joe Johnston was and still is the best choice to direct Episodes 7-9. Comment below if you'd like, but remember to be respectful.

Cap was set in the 1940's...

Of his four movies (the two made for tv movies, the 90's movie, and this most recent one) CA:TFA was the he's best one yet, but was nothing special.

Cap took place in the 40s bud

Joe Johnston was my choice too, He's got a great eye and is good at adding a lot of heart and emotion in his films. He gets a bad rap for movies like The Wolfman, but the guy walked in to a bad project all around, he was the 3rd director, with 3 weeks to prep, i would say its not his fault. I hope he gets a shot at it in the future!

Maybe they want to take the new Trilogy to a new direction and that is why they do not want to Gore antybody who had worked on a star wars film before.

Joe Johnston plays it too safe.

@JokerFanHAhaHa

Or he'll collapse under all that pressure....

But no, i'm sure it'll be a great movie, as i too am a big Star Wars and JJ fan! :-)

If you want to take a fresh approach then Joe Johnston is not the best choice... JJ Abrams is a far better director then Joe Johnston!

Jj has directed 3 things, while they looked good, they all look exactly the same, and to me all three were really draggy. Especially super 8. For Star Wars I think most people want the look and feel of the originals, they wanna feel like they are right back to where they left off at the end of Jedi, Johnston knows how to replicate and produce those images and feelings.

Brad Bird was the best choice.

Star Wars needed a storyteller to get back to its roots, not another CGI fest with no heart. Not to say Johnston wouldn't have done a good job but I think they couldn't have picked better. I have faith J.J. will bring back what Star Wars has been missing since the originals...

@soto, I wouldn't say it's over, I'd say its the route most take because its cheaper and less time consuming, the originals used practical and look how it still holds up. Good craftsmanship stays good craftsmanship but cgi will always look dull a few years down the road as technology gets faster and faster

Why is this on main if it did not get any likes? That aside, I do think he would have been great for Star Wars, but I have faith in JJ.

J Johnston is a very good director and the man created Boba Fetts look. But I'm sure JJ will do just fine. I hope he channels Star Trek JJ and not LOST JJ because that show fvcking sucked.

Why the [frick] is this on main? This isn't even close to noteworthy, I was just getting my damn thoughts out. If its the site owner putting it on main as a joke, you're kinda being a dick to other users. If its someone else putting my articles on main, they shouldn't even have the power to do so. Put articles on main if they have enough god damn likes. You're making me out to be even more of a joke on this site, and being a dick towards everyone else.

"He knows Star Wars backwards and forwards. And even more importantly, he knows the creatures of Star Wars backwards and forwards."

Everyone knows STAR WARS backwards and forward.

Muftak is the protector of Kabe. I could direct the movie based on this logic. Abrams is perfect, but johnston might be a good second choice candidate but that's irrelevant now.

Dumbest article I've ever read! So let me get this straight....you want the director who butchered The Wolfman and raped the third installment of the once great Jurassic Park series to direct Star Wars, a series that desperately needs a well done "rebooted" sequel to regain its former glory??
Well, let me just say that I'm glad you don't work for Disney!

@kman: Did you actually read the article, or did you just go to the Wikipedia page and assume you knew enough about the man to say he shouldn't direct?
ManOfKrypton

If you want a fresh approach on Star Wars, then you need to bring in someone that has no ties to the previous films... JJ Abrams is that man, and what he did for Trek worked wonders... I'm glad he got the gig!
