Even STAR WARS VII Actor Oscar Isaac Wishes George Lucas Never Tweaked Originals

Oscar Isaac ("Inside Llewyn Davis") is doing some press for his new movie "Two Faces Of January." While answering questions about it and his December film, ; "A Most Violent Year," with Jessica Chastain, he answered a few about Star Wars: Episode VII. Below, is an excerpt from an interview Huffington Post conducted with the actor. The most interesting bits are his views of movie spoilers and George Lucas tinkering with the original Star Wars saga.

HP: Okay, here's a nostalgia-based question that you'll be allowed to answer: How do you feel about the "updates" George Lucas has made to the films?
Oscar Isaac: Well, it’s a funny thing. I mean there’s two things. As an artist, like, he made the shit, so why can’t he do whatever the heck he wants with it. There’s a part of me that appreciates that he doesn’t really care if people are upset about it. He decided to share it with all of it and he wants to go back and do stuff, whatever. But as a fan, I’d much rather go back and watch the old thing, because it’s a product of the time. It’s what did you do at the time with the things that you had. And that’s what made that movie so amazing. At that time with that technology he made this thing and it was [frick]ing awesome. So, you know, to go back and kind of tweak it with new stuff, it doesn’t make it more interesting for me as a watcher. It makes it less interesting, but I can’t fault him for doing that.

HP: What is it like working within the secrecy surrounding "Star Wars"?
Oscar Isaac:You can’t say anything. You can’t say shit. But it’s fine! I don’t know why people are so obsessed with finding out stuff before the movie comes out. It’s so much more fun to just go. I mean, I don’t do that. I don’t go looking for stuff that I’m interested in, you know, to try and find out pictures and what the movie’s about. It’s so much more fun to be surprised.

HP: Is there anything you are excited about that won't reveal anything about your mysterious, yet-to-be-announced character?
Oscar Isaac:There’s not anything that I can say about the character, but I can say that I’m most excited and, I know this seems nerdy, but I love the fact that J.J. Abrams is shooting it on film. And that’s not just from an aesthetic standpoint -- it really does matter -- but it’s about how a movie is filmed and the set, it changes it. It changes so many things. I mean, I’ve had to do things over again because there was a hair in the gate, which is so old school, but it just feels better, and movies are all about feeling, so I think that’s something that I’m so very excited about apart from the fact that it looks amazing, so textured and alive.

Star Wars: Episode VII - Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, David Oyelowow, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film. It's being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Inside Llewyn Davis? What you do in your spare time, nails, that should remain private.

@Nova LOL! There's far more trollish (and much less funny) comments that deserve getting banned for haha.

And of course Oscar Isaac thinks Lucas should've left well enough alone with the originals. EVERYONE thinks the changes he made are asinine and unnecessary. When a piece of art manages to transcend himself and become a permanent fixture in pop culture...I think the owner owes it to society to preserve it, the way that everyone saw it. Until they officially release it the way it's supposed to be, we'll always have the de-specialized torrent editions of the originals.

Inside Llewyn Davis was an expectedly sad film for myself. I mean it's great but it's heavy too. Isaac killed in it too.

everyone makes mistakes,lucas altered three movies that didn't need updating & then made three average at best prequel movies.

Hey there, congrats on not reading the article before you commented! That must've been a lot of work for you. Real tough, I bet. You need some water there, big guy? Take a little sit down maybe? Don't strain yourself, is all I'm sayin'.

@AlexanderLykins

That's the only reason I care too. If I want to watch the original unaltered trilogy, I can't find it easily.

Some of the changes are actually good, like windows in Cloud City.

The most important change however is obviously this...

Total game changer. IDK what we'd do if it weren't for the genius of Lucas.

Hey, if Da Vinci walked into the Louvre to paint a moustache on Mona Lisa, we should let him in, right? Nobody would complaint..
The prequels are not very good, but then again, so are not big chunks of RotJ either. Honestly, the Chewie tarzan shout as he swings onto a chicken walker..? Ewoks? An entire legion of the Empires finest troops are: One AT-AT standing still, a few chicken walkers and a bunch of troopers who die or get knocked out by getting hit by small rocks and sticks on their armour.

1 good movie out of 6 does not make for a good franchise.

@Alexander Lykins Are you sure ? I know it was four or five years ago, but I bought the original trilogy which came with both the updated and the original theatrical releases on them. Maybe you're right and they're not selling those anymore, but at least they used to.

I never dared to watch the updates. I saw one scene on YouTube and that was enough to convince me. I guess I'll keep it that way.

Shit, it's been so long since I watched the originals, I think I'll have to start again tonight.

@OrgasmicPotatoe

Those were limited editions and apparently only released because Lucasfilm begged George to because of piracy...he didn't want to do it! I'll never buy the new Blu-rays until we get the real films back. As for watching the originals now, I leave you with this:

I would LOVE to see the REAL OT negatives being remastered in 4K. I don't care if the effects look more fake or whatnot, I want to see them again exactly how they were. I got the real OT but it's a very crappy quality unfortunately...

Great article that most of you really ought to check out about the fan edit known as the Despecialized Edition. Serious work going into them, making it even better quality than the official blurays. Also amazing quotes from Lucas about directors altering films etc, made a decade or so before he did it himself.

The original theatrical cuts released on DVD were ripped from Laserdisc, so they aren't even digital. Horrible quality, and certainly not up to DVD let alone bluray.

I enjoy some of the changes, not all, but definitely feel both versions should be available.

"...please don't use the word "Everyone" because not everyone thinks like that or even care"

*sigh* Sometimes I feel like people are getting up to Drax-levels of literalism.

@MexicanChinman, Do you honestly believe that when I said "everyone", I actually, literally meant every single person who applies to this situation? That not one single person would dare to hold the opinion of actually liking the changess Lucas made?? Of course not.

First of all, like you said, not everyone may even care. Secondly, there's (quite literally, this time) no topic on Earth where people unanimously agree on one singular thing. So I highly doubt that Lucas tampering with his own movies just so happens to be the ONE topic where EVERYONE actually agrees on one outcome: that it was a terrible decision.

So having ruled those things out, the question remains: what exactly was I saying with my first comment? Well, with a little common sense and a little extrapolation, it stands to reason that I meant that the vast, vast majority of people who would have an informed, knowledgeable opinion on this matter would agree that the changes Lucas made were not for the better. And based on any experience that anyone may have by surfing the internet, reading comments on relevant articles on different sites, or just talking to people on an everyday basis, it's practically undeniable that the vast majority of folks would like to have the pristine, un-altered editions of the originals. Which was exactly my point in the first place.

So rather than banning such short, catchy, to-the-point, all-encompassing words like "Everyone", or "No one" from our vocabulary and replacing them with long, rambling, slightly more accurate, but much less necessary phrases such as "Well, obviously everybody won't agree with me on this, but the vast majority of folks..." is a waste of time. So rather than taking everything as literally as possible, it'd serve both you and me better to just avoid spelling out every little thing (like I was just forced to do) and try to give a little lee-way for people's comments next time. Make sense?

This article could have been named "yet another person agrees that the original trilogy looked better". My 5 and 3 year old nieces know that the originals look better (of course, I did plant that thought in their minds, but they don't understand that yet). :D
