Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg Plan To Expand The STAR WARS Universe

Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg Plan To Expand The STAR WARS Universe

The duo are writing new Star Wars flicks alright - but it might be the spinoffs a bit further down the line! Sources tell THR that each writer will actually pen separate projects, not necessarily "Episode 8" and "Episode 9", and likened plans to what Marvel have done with their cinematic universe..

It seems Kasdan and Kinberg have indeed been hired to work on Disney's new Star Wars movies, it won't necessarily be episodes VIII and IX that they will be writing. THR reveals that it could be some of the spinoffs that will be part of the “every two to three year” plan set for the new saga that the two will work on. The site also mention the "Skywalker storyline", confirming what we had pretty much already figured - the initial series of movies at least, will indeed revisit the characters from the original trilogy.

From THR..

"Their scripts could turn into official “Episodes” in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters. Disney CEO Robert Iger said the goal is to release a Star Wars movie “every two to three years,” and some could easily focus on other pieces of the expansive mythos (similar to Marvel’s Avengers universe). Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment."

So which characters would you like to see become the focus of the spinffs? Obviously Bobba Fett is a popular one, but personally I'd like to see the continuing adventures of that poor one-armed, Walrus-faced bastard Ponda Baba. Sound off below.

Stop milking the franchise and just give us episodes 7-9 and call it day... We seriously don't need spin offs to these movies

@johnblake I thought it was always expected that if sequels to the OT were ever made, they would take place at least a generation away (just like the prequels were). So Luke and Leia have aged just right. There's no need to try to hide that.

Great, so now we're going to be getting 'Star Wars Origins: Admiral Akbar". Don't turn Star Wars into the Avengers, Disney. Please don't.

Spin offs could be cool, as long as they aren't too overdone. We don't need back stories for every character! Also, it's Boba, not Bobba.

Rogue squadron or a Storm Trooper war film but what I really want is Darth fecking Vader and Boba Fett hunting down the last few Jedi that are scattered about the galaxy, set it a couple of years before New Hope and let the finale be how the rebels steal the blueprints to the Death Star, nicely leading up too Ep4.
It could look like proper SW with all the cool vehicles and stuff we love and easily be made a trilogy. No need for any of the old actors save for James Earl Jones to voice DV and perhaps a cameo from the Emperor.

Thats what I want.

Disney's gonna milk the shit out of SW. And I'm cool with that if the productions are good.

I'm not really feeling the "spin-offs" ...
I think they could do a main series through episode 12 (so two more trilogies). Then, if they're going to make more films, do an Old Republic kinda thing like a lot of fans want. It's like the ancient mythology of Star Wars.

As far as Boba, I'd prefer they move ahead with the plans for a live action show between Episodes III & IV, with him as one of the main characters.

Also, when The Clone Wars show ends, they should do another animated show between VI & VII. The new films will likely feature some, but not focus on, the original cast. Here, they could voice younger versions of their characters between the trilogies giving us continued adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, Lando, etc. and how they get from episode VI to VII.

Yeah well he's a mate of mine and he told me he was christened "Bobba", but that the league of Bounty Hunters made him remove a B cos they thought it sounded cooler. He still prefers his full name though, which is why I use it when talking about him in articles.

Or I, y'know, added a B by mistake.

That means there'll probly be prequel-ish story lines as well with the old Republic and the Jedi along with the obvious Boba Fett/ bounty hunter stuff. I wanna see Yoda get some Yaddle action.

I figured they were going to take a similar approach to Marvel when they announced the “every two to three year” plan. We'll see how this plays out.

Boba Fett is a stupid character. The only reason he's loved is because over the past 30 years, fans have created this air of mystique and reverence about him when he's really just a glorified extra.

Err I love Star Wars but I think there is a point where it will be milking instead of trying to tell the story. Make Star Wars movies because you have a story. DONT make a story because you have a Star Wars license
captainireland
captainireland - 11/28/2012, 11:47 AM
@GetsugaTensho22 I very much agree. He had a handful of lines and a stupid death. He was never a great villain, he was more of a plot device to bring Vader to Cloud City. There's not even an air of mystique about him. He's a clone who adopted his "father's" mantle as a bounty hunter wearing Mandalorian armour that eventually died like a fool. What's behind the mask? Tamuera Morrison's face. Mystery solved.

@StarkAnthony I also agree.

OH GOD NO!!!!!! PLEASE NOOOOOOOOO!!! Episode VII is doomed. Kasdan couldn't write to save his life. He lost any writing abilities over two decades ago. He wrote and directed Darling Companion for god sakes. The most cliche ridden, predictable, stupid and pointless movie ever. He wrote, produced, and directed Dreamcatcher, Wyatt Earp, French Kiss, and Mumford. All terrible sloppy atrocities. Kasdan used to be a great writer, but has lost his touch and is way beyond his time.
Don't even get me started on that lousy pathetic excuse for a writer, Simon Kinberg, He was a script doctor for Fantastic Four , Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and Knight and Day. He wrote and produced Jumper which tops Darling Companion for the stupidist movie ever. All that makes me want to do is jump off a building, or surgically remove the terrible writing that is scarred into my brain. Once someone rapes the X-Men trilogy after Brian Singer made two great movies, it's time for them to go, Brett Ratner shouldn't get all the blame. Even Zues couldn't direct a good movie with a screenplay that abominable. I think Kinberg intentionally ruined the X-Men trilogy. What was the point of making Magneto an a*shole? Mr. and Ms. Smith was pretty vomit-retching. That so called screenwriting creature should not get any credit for the solid awesome movie that was X-Men: First Class. He didn't write a single letter of that script (X-Men: First Class) and thank god he didn't. All he did was be one of FOUR producers. If anything, he probably made it worse. I was excited for these sequels, but there's no hope now, Star Wars is being raped again. Please, anything but this, bring on George Lucas again, anything, PLEASE NOOOO!!!!!

AnungUnRama - 11/28/2012, 12:32 PM
Do a spin off set about 900 years before the OT centering around a young yoda. So we could on the one hand see an Old Republic and have on the other hand at least one very well known character. Could be interesting to see Yoda at his peak, though.

AnungUnRama - 11/28/2012, 12:33 PM

AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/28/2012, 12:41 PM
Leave the original characters rest. Bring on new characters and new story.

Make the main character some soldier or Pilot or Bounty Hunter who teams with a Jedi to face a new Sith threat or something like that.
AnungUnRama
AnungUnRama - 11/28/2012, 12:41 PM
And give us the TV series set between E3 and 4. There we don't need any known characters. Maybe a Vader cameo here and then. And yes the idea of another cgi series after Clone Wars has ended, set between E6 and 7, is good, too.

Shouldn't all this and the money from all future merchandise products be enough to make it a profitable deal for Disney. Please don't do another movie ever other year
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/28/2012, 12:50 PM
Give some of the original characters small cameo roles if nothing.

Darth Maul i would love to see comeback. He just looks so [frick]ing badass. Or someone new who belongs in the same race.
asherman93
asherman93 - 11/28/2012, 12:54 PM
@AlexDeLarge87 You want to see info about Maul, The Clone Wars brought him back with the voice of Starkiller behind him.

And as for expanding the Star Wars universe, in my opinion this could either end up destroying the franchise... or create one of the biggest storytelling playgrounds of all time.
...Not to mention, we could see an adaptation of some of the expanded universe more.
Humby
Humby - 11/28/2012, 2:57 PM
In my opinion, even making episodes VII - IX is milking it. The Skywalker story is finished. It's the Star Wars name that sells, Disney doesn't need to reexamine old story lines to make their money.

That being said, I like the idea of Disney making spin-off films so long as they are completely fresh ideas. My fear is that they will try and connect them with the existing films too much. The Star Wars Universe is huge and has more than a thousand years of history to it. Make use of that, Disney!

I love Boba Fett as much the next guy, but let's be honest, the ONLY reason Jango appeared in the prequels was to appease the fans who wanted to see more Fett action, even though it didn't turn out exactly how most of them (us) expected. Making a film dedicated to him would be milking it. After that, we would probably get a young Han Solo movie, and then a Darth Maul movie, and then a Darth Vader hunting jedi movie. Where does it end?

If they want to make other Star Wars movies, they need to start fresh; New time period, new characters, etc. This is the only way to avoid milking and oversaturating the Star Wars name.

Right the wrong that was casting the secondary villain in the prequels.
The concept designer Dermot Powers created and wanted to go with the female Sith concept that eventually became known as Asajj Ventress; http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/Asajj_Ventress_concept.jpg

But George Lucas over-ruled him and wrote in frakkin' Saruman as a villain. >.<
Major missed opportunity for actually having a crazed vicious and scary Sith for a change.
