STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley Confirms There Were Plans For Rey To Be Related To Obi-Wan Kenobi

Rey being "Rey Palpatine" has been an endless source of debate for bemused Star Wars fans since The Rise of Skywalker was released, but Daisy Ridley has now revealed a couple of alternate scenarios...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's big twist with Rey was not well-received, with the reveal that she's the daughter of a failed Emperor Palpatine clone (making her the iconic villain's daughter and grandaughter) landing with a thud for most fans. Her later decision to dub herself "Rey Skywalker" also failed to hit the mark, but there were once very different plans in place for the character.

As you can see in the video below, actress Daisy Ridley has confirmed that an early idea was for Rey to be a linked to Obi-Wan Kenobi in some way. "At the beginning [Lucasfilm] were toying with an Obi-Wan connection. There were different versions and at one point she was no one."

Rumours to this effect did the rounds both before and after The Force Awakens was released, while the plan to make her "no one" was introduced in The Last Jedi by filmmaker Rian Johnson.

Interestingly, Ridley admits that the idea of her being related to Palpatine was constantly changing, and clearly not even decided on once cameras were rolling (which explains why the movie was deemed a mess by many fans). "It came to Episode IX and J.J. pitched me the film and they were like 'Oh yeah, Palpatine’s grandaddy' and I was like 'Awesome' and then two weeks later he was like 'Oh we're not sure...' So it kept changing."

"So even as we were filming I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be," the actress concludes.

@TheWalkingCuban - I have no idea who Monica is to be honest.

Horseshoes and handgrenades is a reference to "close doesn't count", except in those two instances. 😁

Everything I read about the new trilogy is absurd and disorganized. Everything.

@Repian - my thing in Rian Johnson saying he wrote TLJ over a weekend at Starbucks. And that was pretty much the draft they went with. The first.

I’m glad some people like TLJ, but man did it feel like a first draft. I don’t hate on it as much as others do, but objectively this is where the seams in the sequel trilogy really start to show. I don’t even blame all of it on RJ, if Lucasfilm was in such a hurry they take the first draft they are as much to blame for the mess that became of it.

@MG0019 - In what interview did he say that? I find it hard to believe that a guy who wrote a complex movie like Knives Out would write something "in Starbucks over the weekend". Genuinely curious if you could link me.

@MG0019 - I love TLJ but I can definitely see that being the case and pretty much all the issues I have with the movie being caused by the script not going through many drafts to work out the kinks.

Also feels like Rise of Skywalker suffered much worse with similar issues, watching that really felt like they hadn't even finished a whole draft.

Okay wow....[frick]ing wow. That is sad, you should know your big reveal by the time you get to filming. For [frick]s sake, I didn't hate the sequel trilogy overall, but disliked ROS heavily. And this lynches it, if you were that rushed [frick]ing delay the movie my god.

@Mrcool210 - Mark Hamill literally didn't know the vader reveal until it was spoken during the scene. In the script it was written as "no luke, Obi-Wan killed your father", and other drafts have even gone to the point of including scenes of vader encountering a force ghost of anakin. EVERY story gets retconned all the time. Hell, early versions of the credit scene of Iron Man made the Raimi spiderman and foxmen movies canon with the mcu.

LMAO! Daisy Ridley essentially lending more concrete evidence ti the fact that they HAVE NO IDEA what they are doing. Just making it up as the go along.

You can't make this up

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah. Maybe if they focused on a good story these details would be just... Well, details in the end.

God, They really messed SW up at Disney. They managed to make these films worse than the prequels, it's unbelievable.

Literally any what-could-have-been option you can read would've been better than what we got, anyway.

@NewAtrocitus3 - I disagree tbh and I didn't even like the film. Rey being related to Obi-Wan makes far less sense that Rey being related to Palpatine.
