Michael Jai White Wants To Return For An R-Rated Spawn Film

Here's something pretty cool for the fans of the series of Spawn comics and even the not so well received film made about the character. Mortal Kombat: Legacy actor Michael Jai White says that he would love to return to the character of Al Simmons/Spawn as long as creator Todd McFarlane is the one running the show.

It's certainly not news that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been pushing for some time to get a reboot film of the character made, but things are proving difficult as the director wants the film to have a hard R rating and a lot of studios just don't feel comforting fronting the money for something like that.. While at SDCC '11, Michael Jai White spoke about the possibility of returning to the character.


“I hope he does [make the film]. In the next couple years I might have to produce it myself. It’s a no-brainer. Look at how these movies have done, superhero movies that have gone dark, and there hasn’t been one darker than Spawn. If we do it like we want to, it could be a game changer. I think Todd feels the same way as me – that we go R. Not a kinder, gentler Spawn, we go straight R – like pushing it, pushing NC-17. Give the fans what they expect. That edge brought [the comic book] to where it is. I would really like to show what that character can be.”

You cant really blame the guy for wanting a second chance at the character, in my opinion he did an amazing job considering the material he was given to work with. While the Spawn movie was considered a miserable fail by most, I still enjoy it, maybe it's because when I was younger it was something I enjoyed so much so looking back now it makes me feel nostalgic.

nice. i've been looking forward to it for a long time. yeah i still enjoy the other movie. i actually watched that movie before i read comics. people i know say the FX sucked. yeah they were doing it at a time when they had to invent the fX they were using. i still love it. i can seperate myself from source material it's the only way for me to just enjoy a good movie. (good being subjective to each of us) I want this one bad though now that i am a comic reader and a huge spawn fan and would love a live action movie in the tone of the animated ones. hell i'd support even a no special FX no spawn SAM AND TWITCH MOVIE! and todd is writing the script and wants to direct it if he knows anything about directing and can do a good enough job to entertain me i'm all for this movie.

I would love to see another Spawn movie. Spawn is one of the most underated comic book charcters. Spawn could literally take out 95% of the comic book characters out right now.

Todd's an entrepreneur anyway so he's probably got the cash to start his own movie production company. problem solved. robert rodriguez started his own sh...production company haha. i'm sure Todd's got the money.

i can see a problem being that the thing these days is "make it accessible to the public" and spawn is like the rockstar comic, he's got fans. but other people may not flock and give it the big bucks

MJW is great. Just watch Blood and Bone to see his fighting capabilities and Black Dynomite to see that he doesn't take himself too seriously (which is always good). He did a good job as Spawn, the movies faults did not lay with him.

Everyone goes on about how good he was in blood & bone HE WAS AWESOME IN THAT but I reckon he was even better in Undisputed 2. Don't even get me started on Boyka.

Spawn movie was great for its time so I say bring it :)

Spawn is my all-time favorite. I like the first movie and would love to see him return for an R-rated sequel, reboot, whatever they want to do. I just want another Spawn movie.

@ pOoPEE - I've not actually seen Undisputed 2. I've not seen that much of MJW other than Spawn, Blood & Bone and Black Dynamite. I just know that opening scene to Blood & Bone is bad-ass! I think I would prefer to see him as Black Panther (although there are other great choices for that casting) but I see no reason for him not being Spawn too.
