EDITORIAL: Who Was That In The Mid-Credits Scene Of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN?

If you've seen The Amazing Spider-Man, then you must be wondering who on Earth the mysterious man in the shadows was in the mid-credits sequence. Well, we don't have any official answers just yet, but here are a few interesting theories. [MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

Who was that in the mid-credits scene of The Amazing Spider-Man? Well, in case you didn't recognise the voice or checked out the cast list on IMDb immediately after seeing the film, it was actually actor Michael Massee (credited only as "Man in the Shadows"). He's best known for playing small screen baddies in the likes of 24, Flashforward and Supernatural. He even has prior experience with the Marvel Universe, having voicied Bruce Banner in both Ultimate Avengers animated movies. Most of you will have probably seen the film by now, but here's a reminder of how the mid-credits scene plays out. As Curt Connors is led into a jail cell, lightening strikes and a mysterious figure appears...

Man in the Shadows: Hello doctor. Did you tell the boy?

Curt Connors: Tell him what?

Man in the Shadows: Did you tell the boy about his father?

Curt Connors: No.

Man in the Shadows: Well, that's very good, so we'll let him be...for now.

Curt Connors: You should leave him alone!

With another flash of lightening, he's gone. So, just who the heck was it?! There are a few possibilities. The first is perhaps the most obvious: Norman Osborn. Mentioned a few times throughout the film, it definitely seems as if Oscorp has SOMETHING to do with the death of Peter's parents. Of course, this scene (which arguably feels a little disjointed and out of place) would have made a lot more sense had the scenes from the trailers and TV spots in which both Connors and Ratha tell Peter things like, "Do you have any idea what you really are?" and "You're part of a bigger plan" been included in the final cut. Were those earlier rumours that Peter's father played around with his genes - perhaps explaining why he gains powers from the spider bite and is able to control them - true? On the other hand, it could just be as simple as whether or not Connors told Peter that it was Osborn who had his father killed.

Another indication that this mysterious figure was Norman Osborn is the fact that he was holding a hat. Say wha-?! Well, fans of the original Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Amazing Spider-Man comic books will remember that this is how the Green Goblin's identity was occasionally hidden from readers. This may have been a nod to that from comic book fan and director Marc Webb. However, that doesn't explain how he somehow appeared and then vanished wthout a trace. This leads us to the next theory. The "Man in the Shadows" was actually nothing more than a figment of Curt Connors' imagination. Was he simply hallucinating the presence of Osborn? The Lizard serum certainly left him mentally unbalanced. However, the camera made a point of focusing on his neck (still partially covered in scales) so perhaps that was an indication that it was the Lizard part of his personality speaking to him...seems unlikely though. After all, why would he appear in human form?

Here's where we get a little silly. Perhaps his vanishing act was due to him being none other than Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio! Marc Webb has revealed in the past that he is one of his favourite villains, so perhaps this was his way of introducing him in preparation for the next movie (as an Oscorp heavy rather than a failed stuntman). Hell, if we put the fact he disappeared down to a bit of creative filmmaking on Marc Webb's part, it could have been anyone from Mac Gargan to the Chameleon, or pretty much any other classic Spider-Man villain you can imagine! Nah. Common sense says that this was the introduction of Norman Osborn. Whether he will be played by Massee in the planned sequel remains unknown, but between the mentions of Osborn throughout the film and that broken promise at the end (there's no way that is going to end well for Peter...) this seems like the most obvious direction for the follow-up. He'll take a serum which turns him into the Green Goblin, resulting in the villain coming to blows with Peter Parker over the mystery behind the death of his parents.

Well, those are a few theories anyway! Some people are even speculating that the scene had something to do with Sony's planned Venom spin-off. Sound off with your thoughts on all this and your own ideas in the usual place. Check out my interview with Marc Webb HERE and be sure to click HERE to read my 4* review of the film.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Why change Mysterio's origin? It's fine in the comics. If you're going to make unnecessary changes and add and drop character points to 'put your stamp' on things, why not just MAKE UP or CREATE YOUR OWN superhero and show me something I've never seen before instead of changing something I'm already familiar with?

I imagine this is what friends and family members must feel when they watch movies or read books based on people they actually know.

Way to point out how this movie really wasn't that great. Webb wasn't the right guy for the job, and the script wasn't right for the reboot.

Film was all flash no sizzle. The only redeeming part fo the film was Garfield's Parker portrayal...even parts of it were too giggly. The Web-slinging was good too...when not trying to be grounded in too much reality.

Who cares who the mystery figure was? Sony isn't going to let a sequal to this version happen. If anything another reboot will happen. This is Marvel's/Sony's Superman Returns or Green Lantern.

I greatly doubt that it's his Lizard subconscious - like what you've written above, why would he appear as human? Furthermore, what does his Lizard persona have to do with Peter's parents? And I think Osborn is the strongest "candidate" in this case, indeed. My speculations, though:

1. Norman Osborn - Apart from the way he disappears, I think everything else of this Man in the Shadows could be hints that his identity is really Norman; mainly his rugged hair and overall untidy appearance can be related to his ill state. Additionally, Michael Massee looks for the part, and if he's not going to be the main villain of the sequel, why not a background villain - say, the founder/funder of the Sinister Six?

2. Quentin Beck - Well, they certainly have to alter his position and character if it really is him. But, everyone knows, the way he disappears among the rumbling thunder...yeah, you get it.

3. Albert Malik - Perhaps, they keep him in the universe, sans the Red Skull identity. If the man's related to/know of the Parkers' death, who knows he in fact is the murderer?

4. Edward Brock, Sr. - Now, someone suggested that Richard may be working on the Symbiote (a la Ultimate Spider-Man), that's why he fled, etc., etc., and if so, I think...why can't the elder Brock be in it, too?

Massee looks like he can pass as Chameleon, too, but I'm not quite sure. Anyway, great write-up as usual, Josh. Bring on more speculations!

Why couldn't they just be straight-forward about it and reveal who it was? What's the point in keeping it a secret? How would you like it if Thanos wasn't revealed in The Avengers?

Financials aside...this is not a great movie. It was entertaining...but no on par or even the same league as the first 2 with Toby Maguire. There is a difference between a movie that makes money and one that is actually good. This is a film that was placed in a prime weekend and had the shit marketed out of it. I wanted to like it and I did just not as much as I would have liked.

I agree. Same goes for me, I liked it more than all of Raimi's movies put together...spiderman 3 ruined spiderman 1....when you go back add things like SANDMAN killed Uncle Ben....when in spiderman he had already been done with that part of his life...youre adding things to a story that didnt need it. Hence butchering Venom and all...I love TAS!

And he won't be the villian in the sequel m, Marc said that man might not be The baddie in but rather just a character that has a role in the film. My guess is the sequel electro is gonna be the main baddie but he's working for Osborn. towards the end we see osborn transform and he kills off gwen. Peter doesn't know it's him but he finds out in the last film(3) and it concludes there. Peter not only feels guilty for killing her but he feels gulity for letting Gwen back into his life SPOILER
" mr.parker don't make promises you can't keep"
Peter leans to Gwen
" maybe those are the best kind":) sequel will be awesome!!

No way it's Osborn. At least I hope not. No offense to Massee, but him playing Osborn does not get me excited. Bryan Cranston, though, would.

And the movie was awesome.

They really left out a lot of scenes in this movie including the "Do you know what you really are?" or the "You want the truth Peter? Come and get it" thing. Even the early footage from when the lizard was frightening those girls in the bathroom. I can already tell there's going to be a shitload of delete scenes. lol But I liked the movie, just wish those scenes were included. Would've made more sense considering how the mystery behind his parents was thought to be the main plot.

Well thats YOUR OPINION. I on the other hand think it's better than Spiderman 2. I also though Garfield did a BETTER job as Peter Parker and Spiderman.

I've already forgetten Tobey was spiderman.

myparentsaredead
myparentsaredead - 7/4/2012, 12:28 PM
Imagine: All this scene needed was Connors yelling a name after "You should leave him alone!" If he'd said "Osborn", especially considering how he'd been mentioned throughout the movie, the scene probably would've gone over a lot better. There's nothing interesting about the scene, nothing that makes me anticipate what happens next. It's lame, for lack of a better word. Like I said, all the scene needed was for Connors to yell out a name.

"It's not Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Shocker, Chamillion, Morbius, Venom, Carnage, The Joker, The Quaker Oats guy, Steve from Blues Clues, it's [frick]ing Norman Osborn. Enough with the denial you all know it is. Just because lighting struck when he left the room doesn't mean it's Electro or Mysterio. Norman was mentioned a handful of times during the film where at the end he had a cameo."

i think its mysterio,he's older,he appears and disappears, norman osborn is on his death bed so id count him out. all in all the movie was great. Who ever said it was all flash and no sizzle is crazy. There were so many emotional ups and downs in the movie.A lot better than rami's in my eyes.

It makes perfect sense due to the fact if you see the movie...in the beginning Young Peter Parker is playing hide and seek and pulls a curtain away to reveal a hat *same or similar to the hat worn by the Man in the Shadows* , shoes and a cane fall to the ground...then later Young Peter finds his dads office broken into and calls him

It wasn't really a 'juicy' post-credits scene like Iron Man 2 or Avengers or even Thor had.
This one was just like "your telling me nothing and not even making me want to know what you're talking about"

I do hope it's Mysterio though ...
and maybe in the 3rd movie ... SINISTER SIX.

IT's already announced that theyre going to make a sequel. IMDB, Herohype, Wikipedia...have already stated it....only thing that's not confirmed is if WEBB will return..if webb returns that would be AWESOME. IF Webb can sign on for 2 more movies and make his own version of s sequel that would be just perfect. I already know this trilogy will be better than Raimi's/
