SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING's Vulture Has Personal Beef With IRON MAN

Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes has a pretty different backstory from his Marvel Comics counterpart. It seems the MCU version runs a NYC salvaging company that cleans up after superhero battles.

Ahead of an imminent new trailer release for Spider-Man: Homecoming, USA Today has a new profile of the film's primary villain, Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture.  Instead of the elderly business man from the comics, this version of the character runs a NYC salvaging company that cleans up property damage after incidents such as the Chitauri invasion (perhaps this is where all those Damage Control rumors are springing from).

Toomes is less than thrilled when a government-backed company, owned by Tony Stark, takes over his contract (after some sort of accident).  Backing up Vulture are Shocker and The Tinkerer, played by Bokeem Woodbine and Michael Chernus.  Now out of work, Vulture and his ragtag crew of ex-employees begin reconfiguring all the weird alien tech they've found over the years into weapons too powerful for local law enforcement to handle.

According to Keaton, Toomes feels like a victim.   "Some people see themselves as victims — he sees himself a little bit like that.  He probably would have a strong argument that he never got a fair shot — a lot of ‘Why not me? Where’s mine?’"

Director John Watts adds that it was fun to pick over past Marvel films for the tech that Vulture, The Tinkerer and Shocker would be using in Homecoming, calling it, "neat junk from all the other movies."  He continued, "It’s a really great starting point for the villains to have the Vulture picking over the stuff and finding the valuable exotic elements and having the Tinkerer assemble into something that could be used."

With a bevy of new posters and new cast interviews, a new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to be released later today. Stay locked to CBM as we'll provide your first look as soon as it's released!

@MattBellissimo - wasn't there a set pic of someone with a "department of damage control" badge?

@AbidNaga - I believe so, yes.

@MattBellissimo - how dare you bring DC to this thread??

Jk

@AbidNaga - There are multiple sources which indicate that an organisation with the initials "DODC" exists in the movie - an organisation which Tyne Daly's character appears to be affiliated with.

The fact that her character looked exactly like Anne Marie Hoag was until now the only real evidence to say that DODC was Damage Control, but id say it's fairly definite now.

There's also a fair weight of other circumstantial evidence, plus a leaked cast list that had the Damage Control character Lenny Ballinger on it, so its all mounting up

@MattBellissimo - Whether this is how they invoke Damage Control or not, I love the fact this is how they made the Vulture. He's picking up scraps for himself.

@Tonic24k - So he is literally a "Vulture" picking apart old tech

@Tonic24k - Agreed Bucky Did Rip Falcon's wing off during Winter Soldier. And those fans look like the helecarrier's.

And the Chiauri gun would be perfect prototype for Shocker

@Tonic24k - Vultures live off the dead carcasses of others, right? Sounds perfect.

@JonC - Indeed. Love the spin Marvel did here. Brilliant creatives at work.

@Deonox - Yep! I'm now pretty excited to see how he pieces everything together. I'm anticipating an easter egg fest of bits and pieces. His helmet seems pretty unique tho....

@BANEofExistence - Yep. Very cool that the writers did this. I suppose if you're going to depart from the comic book iteration you've gotta come correct with how you spin it.

I love how they used the Vulture name; not only is he using the winged suit but he cherry-picks the useful scraps from superhero battles. Awesome.

@BillCipher999 - Chitauri weaponry for sure
CaptainElrond

@MattBellissimo - he seemed to use something that reminded me of a chautarai gun

great excuse for easter eggs.

@MattBellissimo - Yeah... that's actually pretty clever...

...damn them... being so clever...

Hey, Matt. I'm thinking of posting an Iron Fist editorial and could use some advice. How would you suggest I break up the body of the article visually? I've only got one relevant picture in two-pages of text (in a word processor). I'm thinking about using some screenshots from the show with maybe some funny/caricatury dialogue to demonstrate my point, but too much of that seems obnoxious.

@Spock0Clock - If you post-date your article when it's done to your liking, send me the link and I'll check it out/make some edits if necessary! :) What I've usually seen used are stills from the show or official pictures to break up a long article

@MattBellissimo - It's also an awesome parallel. A Vulture (bird) picks up scraps from dead animals to eat. This Vulture (Toomes) is picking up the scraps from dead battles.

So not only are they embracing the Vulture name they are embracing what Vultures do in real life.
JonC
JonC - 3/27/2017, 9:22 AM
@SonOfAGif - It makes a great reason why he would be given the name "vulture" in the first place.

Would be a good business model to be cleaning up after super hero battles in NY. I think they have invaded 5 times in the last year.

hope they get him right. Vulture is one of most 3dimensional villain in Spider comics (at least the older ones i read, probably next to Eddie Brock and Harry Osborn).

Vulture is really the main reason im excited for this
