SPIDER-MAN Spin-Off NIGHTWATCH Reportedly Moving Forward With OLDBOY Director Spike Lee At The Helm

Last year, a rumor did the rounds which claimed that Sony was planning to develop a movie based on relatively obscure Marvel Comics character Nightwatch, and now we have an update on the project's status.

You may recall we ran a story late last year on Sony Pictures' (potential) plans for a movie based on a character first introduced in the pages of Spider-Man, Nightwatch. At the time we heard that Now You See Me Screenwriter Ed Ricourt was working on a script, and that the studio hoping to get none other than Spike Lee on board to helm the picture.

That was back in September and we hadn't heard anything on it since - however, That Hashtag Show has now provided an update on the project's status.

According to their sources, Lee is now on board, but he'll actually be working off a script developed by Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker.

Just in case you're unfamiliar with Nightwatch, a.k.a. Doctor Kevin Trench, he was first introduced in Web of Spider-Man #97 in the '90s. Nightwatch's original costume was very similar to Spawn's which led to many dismissing him as a cheap rip-off, but he's actually a pretty cool character.

We'll have to take this as a rumor for now, but given the amount of scoops THS has been breaking lately, you can probably expect trade confirmation within the next couple of days.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Everytime Sony announces a Spiderman spinoff the fan reaction is usually this:

When Warner Brothers announce a new DCEU property the fan reaction is usually this:

When marvel studios announces a new property or release the same trailer 13 times in different languages the crowd reaction is usually this:

@rkshuttleworth - I don't think so. For me Sony and WB's approach to CBMs universes has felt very cynical. Some people can simply recognise cash grabs when they see it. I'm not saying Marvel don't like their money, but at least they're earning it.

@rkshuttleworth - granted though, this one sounds the best thing Sony has proposed so far but only because if the prospect of Spike Lee doing a superhero movie. Remove him and it loses its shine straight away.

Nightwatch as a title already has a connection for me via the Nightwatch/Daywatch russian series. Also, this character needs a re-design imo.

There are other BAM characters from the Spidey books who deserve a look - I think Rocket Racer fits absolutely perfect in the Homecoming continuity, but [frick] it, if Spike Lee likes a character and wants to do it then you throw all your resources into it.
SonOfAGif

@TheFamousJMC - And knowing Sony they'll want to crossover with Baywatch.

And Amy Pascal will pay homage to Overwatch.

Spike Lee is well past his prime. If they do this they need to get fresh blood like marvel did with coogler.
