SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Actor Nicolas Cage Talks The Film's Humor, Using Bogart As Inspiration

For his second superhero gig of 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star Nicolas Cage intends to bring a classic tone to Spider-Man Noir, citing Casablanca actor Humphrey Bogart as a primary influence.

2018 is the year fans will see Nicolas Cage as both Superman and Spider-Man, something arguably more exciting than Avengers: Infinity War. Ten years of buildup has nothing on Cage lending his voice for two animated superhero movies.

It is a pleasure to see Cage sinking back into comic book movies after his tremendous turn in Kick-Ass. The actor, who has been focusing on B-movies as of late, has already fufilled his role as Superman in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, with Into the Spider-Verse hitting theaters later this year.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly for their fall preview issue, Cage had this to say regarding Spider-Man Noir:

There are multiple Spider-Men in different dimensions that are kind of colliding together. My character is Spider-Man Noir. He’s really Peter Parker from the [1930s]. I tried to channel those noir films with [Humphrey] Bogart, and have those kinds of sounds that he might make with [James] Cagney, or Edward G. Robinson, that kind of way of talking. I tried to give the character that. It was a lot of fun. I think it should be quite funny. The movie definitely has a sense of humor, and that’s a good thing because it’s good for the whole family.

Considering the era from which his character came, it is no surprise that Cage is taking inspiration from the classics. It is also welcome to hear that the film is a lot of fun. With killer animation and a hand from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Into the Spider-Verse is sure to swing through the box office when it hits theaters in December.

tell me I'm not the only one who believes the recent Nic Cage B-movies are really just research for an upcoming role where he will transcend reality and give us the greatest performance in the history of history

I watched the late John Schnepp's documentary on Tim Burton's attempt at adapting Superman. I honestly appreciated their revisionist take on an established cultural icon.

Although it may not have really resonated with the existing fandom, it may have still influenced established canon...

Nic Cage may not have been embraced as the definitive Superman (Christopher Reeve will probably hold that title for quite sometime, even with Henry Cavill's emerging potential), I see the depth that Cage could bring to the role.

I state this, after watching snippets of Cage's most memorable performances; from "Leaving Las Vegas" to "Raising Arizona".

Tim Burton may not have been the director to coax the depth of performance that would tap into Kal El's multi-layers of identity and extra-terrestrialism that a character study film like Joaquin Phoenix's turn as the Joker can bring, BUT as a companion film (in spirit) to Burton's Michael Keaton starring take on Batman, it would forever be referenced as a suplementary component to Superman's larger mythos. Appreciated for its idiosyncracy and themes of alienation, both signature elements of Burton's auteuristic filmography.

Should be a good film. Sony would probably be better off doing Spider-Man theme animation rather then this live action junk they got planned but hey, let's wait and see how this and Venom turn out.

Cage is gonna be great at this role. After hearing him as Supes in Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, I really want him to do more voiceover/animation work.

I couldn't find a good GIF, so I'll leave you with this:
