There was no sign of Tom Holland's Spider-Man in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, though we've since heard the actor very nearly had a voice cameo in the movie (though not as Peter Parker).
At the time, the chances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield lending their voices to wall-crawling Variants seemed unlikely, though both actors later reprised their respective live-action roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's hardly a surprise then that there's been so much talk about the trio being part of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
So, does the trio make a cameo appearance alongside the likes of PlayStation's Spider-Man and The Spectacular Spider-Man? Truth be told, it's complicated...
Is Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Yes and no. The actor hasn't recorded any new dialogue for the movie and his Spider-Man never appears. We do, however, see Peter mourning Uncle Ben after his death in the 2002 movie while Miguel O'Hara is explaining how losing someone they love is just part of being Spider-Man.
Is Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Again, we're going with "yes and no" because Garfield's web-slinger only appears via archival footage from The Amazing Spider-Man. He's shown mourning the fallen Captain George Stacy but also doesn't lend his voice to this movie as an animated version of his Spidey.
Is Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
This is a much easier question to answer: no. Despite being the current Spider-Man, there's not even a shot of Holland in those flashbacks to key moments in the lives of the web-slinging heroes, though the actor has long been absent from Sony's Marvel movies due to his place in the MCU. Still, this feels like a missed opportunity.
In fact, the closest we come to an MCU nod is when a silhouette of Doctor Octopus says the "Hello, Peter" line from Spider-Man: No Way Home (in what's a blatant recycling of Alfred Molina's line from the movie). Perhaps these cameos are being saved for 2024's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
