Marvel Studios/Sony SPIDER-MAN Deal Could Still Happen; New Details Revealed

According to a new report, that Marvel Studios/Sony deal might still be in the works, so don't count Spider-Man out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just yet! Hit the jump for details on how it might come together, Sony's stance on the crossover, that rumoured female led spin-off, and more...

Latino-Review have weighed in on those leaked details about Spider-Man which found their way online late last night as a result of the "Sony Hack" (something which is proving to be tremendous fun for us movie bloggers). Before we get to the good stuff, let's talk about the spinoffs. Apparently, the big plans that Marvel and DC have led to a "crisis of conifidence" over plans for Spider-Man, perhaps explaining why we've heard nothing about Sinister Six and Venom for quite some time. That female-led spinoff would have apparently focused on some previously unseen characters - because apparently Sony don't realise how much we'd all like to see Black Cat, Spider-Girl, etc. on the big screen - and the Aunt May movie is still (sadly) a very real possibility.

Now, the Marvel Studios deal. According to Sony sources, Sony Pictures didn't actually reject a trilogy of movies that Marvel would produce but not have creative control over (somthing which didn't mae much sense when Sony are the ones who have run the character into the ground). Instead, it was a co-production deal which would have seen Marvel and Sony splitting costs 60/40, with Kevin Feige and company in control of the character and setting him up for appearances in the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like that rumoured Captain America: Civil War role.

Here's where it gets really interesting though. Sony bosses in Japan are obviously furious about how this hacking scandal has played out, and aren't happy about the way Spider-Man has been handled regardless. They feel that they need to start producing more profitable "quality" films, and as a result, "Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split is can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups." This obviously means that
we may still see Spider-Man join the MCU! Does anyone else have a horrible feeling that Sony will end up giving a bunch of terrible sounding spinoffs the green light instead though? Share your thoughts on all this in the usual place...

I think people HIGHLY over scrutinise TASM2, it wasn't that bad.

Id be fine if they made this deal. Too bad it will probably never happen.

Not a bad deal, or Marvel could just wait for the rights to revert. I see that happening sooner than later.

"I’m not sure all of this is going to happen fast enough to get Spider-Man into Civil War, but...wouldn’t it be neat if Sony’s “Spidey summit” ended with a call to Marvel, who made a call to Joss Whedon, who got a guy in a Spider-Man suit from ASM 2 to jump into those pick-up shots they’re shooting early next year for Avengers: Age of Ultron?"

If we just go with this and let ourselves think about the possibility of this happening, it could be incredible. According to this excerpt from the source, IF Sony comes through and makes the deal, there probably won't be much time left for Spidey to have anything other than a glorified cameo in Civil War.

But maybe that would be ideal. Establish that Garfield's Spidey is in the MCU with Civil War, let him sit out a few years to build hype and let the taste of the TASM movies wash out of everyone's mouth, then let him play a more major role in Infinity War, setting the stage for solo Spidey movies in Phase 4.

But of course, this is almost certainly a massive long shot anyway. It's fun to speculate, but no sense getting hyped about anything just yet.

@DrDoom A reboot would probably be the best course of action, but that'd make THREE Spidey reboots in a little more than a decade. Not sure I see that happening.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Garfield's Spidey in the MCU. They don't even have to acknowledge the previous TASM movies. Just make it a soft reboot like The Incredible Hulk. Don't explain his origins, don't even hint at any previous stories or villains. Just drop him in the MCU and take it from there!

To be honest, I think Feige and Marvel have already moved on.

Cameo in Age of Ultron, brief role in Civil War, solo MCU movie in 2017, main role in Infinity War.

Do it Marvel/Sony.

While I liked TASM2, I have to admit that the villains were horrible and the score was horrible. Garfield makes a great Spidey, but his Peter Parker is lacking.

I can't wait until we see this:

That's the thing that kills me though: as God-awful as the TASM movies are, Garfield was never the issue. Put his Spider-Man in the MCU (with better writers who actually understand BOTH sides to the character), don't allude to either of the TASM movies, and I think I'd be happy.

Plus that would probably let Sony save SOME face (as little as it might be), which would make them more likely to even consider such a deal in the first place. I can't imagine Sony executives being thrilled about suffering an embarrassing hack, publicly admitting the failures of their franchise, handing over the reins to their golden boy for the greater good...but the actor that they themselves chose wouldn't even be involved? Yeesh.

TASM 2 was bad. Only good part was the costume. Spidey needs to be with Marvel. End of Story.

Weren't you people complaining about how a reboot is too soon and now you want another reboot?

I don't really like the idea of Spider-Man being part of a team (never cared for it in the comics) but if it meant rebooting the character than Im all for it.

Either that or make a proper Spider-Man 4.

But if Disney does use Spidey it better not be Garfield - who I can no longer stand to watch. Absolutely dreadful

Fincher. Netflix. Spidey.

It's incredibly unlikely, but that's gotta be a match made in heaven.

@Snooper Why would Marvel do that? For all intensive purposes Spider-Man is the most popular superhero in the world. He makes more money than Batman and Superman by a long shot as well as out grossing his fellow Marvel heroes.
