Marvel's Spider-Man and company delayed from Disney parks... for now

Disney President Bob Iger gives an update...

During a web cast, Bob Iger, the president of the Walt Disney Company, discussed a little about the company's current relationship with Marvel Comics, purchased by Disney in August last year and finalized back in December. Everybody knows that for the "short term," Disney cannot add Marvel's 5,000 or so characters to their theme parks because of the deal that Marvel made with Universal Studios Florida's Islands of Adventure. But here's one of the more interesting things mentioned in the article:

"Before Disney bought Marvel, Disney and Universal Parks and Resorts struck a deal that restricts Marvel characters to Universal's properties on the East Coast and in Japan, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Universal has a Marvel Super Island in its Islands of Adventure theme park in Florida. California parks reportedly are exempt from the agreement.

Iger said that Disney is looking at putting Marvel merchandise at theme parks."

Well, Disney's already started to sell Marvel merchandise a little bit, as they've added Iron Man merchandise to their California Adventure to tie into the hero's currently in theater sequel. Here's hoping we get to see more of Marvel at Disney's theme parks sooner rather than later. Or at least we can see some more Marvel stuff at Disney in California. I have never been to Universal so I have never been to Marvel Island. Is it pretty cool?

Universal Islands of Adventure is awesome, I go every year, it's a must see for any true comic fan. Doctor Doom's Fearfall is scary cool, The Hulk Coaster is awesome, Spiderman 3d is a really fun ground-breaking ride at the time now they seem more common-place, and Storm Force Accelatron with the X-men . They have a bunch of the characters running around in costumes and have a parade on quads, Spiderman, The X-men, etc, you can get pictures with. The stores sell all sorts of cool Marvel stuff and there's a cool Captain America diner. That's only one section of the park. The park does close early and is expensive but everytime I go I see something new and cool.

I moved to my current locale from Orlando some few years ago, and was a regular at IoA, especially during the Summertime.

In short, if you are a Comic-Book fan (as I assume most reading this are) then IoA is a sort of Mecca-you should go at least once in your life. Period.

When you go, take as much money as possible. They have a crapton of souviners available (just as any other Theme Park does) and wandering through the shops can feel alot like choosing between which of your children to save in a flood...it hurts to leave anyone behind!

Yeah, I'll agree, SDCC is more of an event to attend (one which, I have yet to accomplish, but is on the Bucket List), but IoA is definately one not to be missed...especially for those that don't live 15 minutes away and can go nearly every day.

Even if you do live close, it's still worth spending some time there...especially since you can get the most use out of an Anual Pass.

This is just another case of Marvels's open ended contracts coming back to bite them in the ass. I had originally read that Disney could build rides or attractions based on any character not already being used by Universal. IoA have attractions based on Spider-Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom. I think they also have an X-Men themed arcade and Avengers themed restaurant. This info came from a Bob Iger press conference a couple of weeks after the deal was finalized.
