MORBIUS Spoilers: Does Spider-Man, Venom, Or Any Other Marvel Character Appear In The Movie?

Spider-Man: No Way Home kicked open the door to the Multiverse, but what world is the Living Vampire's film set in and does that lead to any huge cameo appearances? Well, there's a spoilery answer to that!

When Sony dropped the first teaser trailer for Morbius, it appeared as if Spider-Man's time in the MCU had reached its end (even if we didn't know it yet). After fan backlash, the studio reached a new deal with Marvel Studios, ensuring Tom Holland's webbed warrior would remain in the MCU. However, Sony seemingly once planned to combine Spidey's world with the one inhabited by Venom.

This explains original plans for Adrian Toomes in Morbius, though we're still struggling to figure out why Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man was labelled a murderer instead of Holland's Peter Parker after what happened in London with Mysterio. Presumably, Sony couldn't use the suit Marvel Studios created for the hero and that image was meant as either a placeholder or to get fans talking (if so, it worked).

We're not here to figure out Sony's inner workings, though, as we're sure you want an answer to the question above. Does Spider-Man appear in Morbius?

The answer, unfortunately (fortunately?), is no.

There are no references to Spidey throughout the film (that graffiti shot is nowhere to be found), and the only mention of the hero comes in the second post-credits scene when The Vulture name-drops the Spider-Man of his world (read a full breakdown of those here).

Yes, Toomes is in the film, but all his scenes appear to have been reshot. There's also no Venom, with the only references to the symbiote being those we've seen in the trailers. Aside from that, Morbius features no surprise cameos or Marvel characters we didn't already know would appear.

So the people who are only paying to see the movie because it teased an appearance by Spider-Man in the trailers, are getting nothing, huh?

Way to go, Sony. You’ve lowered the bar again.

@PantherKing - hope the other releases bump back to Wednesday. HATE these shows coming out Friday. I have to avoid spoilers for about 25+ hours because I’m usually not home and watching TV on friday nights.

@Ha1frican - Avi Arad has been the biggest cancer in Spider-Man. While he hit the jackpot with the first Spider-Man, he destroyed the first trilogy with his decision to put Venom in the third one and other decisions. After that, he has just been so damaging to Spider-Man movies. (He was also responsible for the recast of Snake in MGS V)

But yes, also Amy Pascal. I don't know how Amy and the president of Lucasfilm keep their jobs even though they have proven destructive for important franchises (respectively)

DISNEY: Now, the first thing the movie studios have to learn is to freeze whenever you hear this. (whistle) Now, the next time you hear this whistle (whistle) ... Each one of you get one IP.

How many?

EVERYONE: One!

DISNEY: Good. Then bring it back to the theater ... Pronto. Ready? Wait for it. Wait for it. Sit down. Ready? (Whistle) Go quickly! Get your IP. Go! Go for it. Yes. Very fast. Good. Quickly. Bring the IP back to the theater. Bring it back to the theater. Quick, quick, quick! Back to the theater! Quickly.

Sony.

Sony ... take your IP to the theater.

SONY: I'm not a studio. I'm a princess.

DISNEY: Take your IP back to the theater.

SONY: I'm not a studio! I'm a princess.

DISNEY: Take it back!

SONY: All right.

@Waddles, @InfinitePunches - Lol! You guys are killing me!

The 200 word limit is *much* lower than what most sites require, by a factor of 3-8 times.

Unfortunately the way that the current state of things are on the web, longer content typically means better performance with the search engines... So it's not necessarily an issue of users on the site clicking and reading, it's an issue of attracting new users.

@Waddles - Haha! Anyone and everyone can contribute. That's both the blessing and curse of a user-generated site.

That being said, how long it will remain up is a mystery... April 1st tends to be a little more lenient the the other days of the year ;)

So I'm not watching Morbius, wasn't gonna, not because of the reviews but just not my cup of tea.

But my theory on why the movie was obviously changed goes like this: it was supposed to come out before No Way Home right?

So, the changes in scheduling, and the changes to that movie (there were things that were changed before final release, we know that due to the pandemic and such) forced the Sony execs to change Morbius. Maybe originally the ending of No Way Home had a different spell, other than everyone forgets Peter Parker, maybe he was transproted to a different Universe all together. And Morbius took place concurrently with No Way Home (a venom situation, where he was in the universe but not involved with the action.)

“You let us keep Spider-Man and I let you pretend your garbage universe is in the MCU but it´s really in a distante corner of the multiverse and will only be acknowledge in post-credit scenes. Ok Sony?”

That seems like a good deal to me.

What really sucks about these Sony films is taking away the MCUs ability to use these characters and actually do them justice. Maybe not so much Morbius, but not getting a MCU Venom and Kraven sucks HARD.

It seems very clear that this movie was supposed to be released before NWH in the period where characters from the other Spiderman universe were getting pulled into the MCU alongside the exposure of Peter’s identity but after all the delays it was retooled and they had to find some bullshit way to make Vulture fit into a Sinister 6 movie
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 3/31/2022, 4:56 PM
@Ha1frican - I wonder if maybe the plan (at some point) might have been for Doctor Strange to send Peter into the Sony universe at the climax, and hence why nobody has heard of Peter Parker / he's alone at the end.

I don't even mean it survived fully into the final script, but it was an idea that they wanted to keep alive for a potential late edit of No Way Home and then the powers that be decided it was best to keep Holland in the MCU rather than try to do a Sony-led second trilogy.

There's so much about NWH that feels like it could have been one or two alternate scenes from being a radically different movie.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 3/31/2022, 5:02 PM
@Spock0Clock - I do think that was on the table at one point. I thought when they struck a deal for a 3rd movie the pitch was to transition him to the Venomverse and close out his story in the MCU. Things must have evolved as the partnership between Fiege and Pascal progressed and Sony realized how much money they would be leaving on the table
