Sinister Six cancelled? TASM 3 in doubt?

With the poor reception/performance of TASM 2, Robert Orci throws doubt to the future of TASM 3. Sinister Six might have also found itself DOA.

Good day every one!

I have looked through many pages on the site, and I have not found this information to be in the "news", "scoop" or "editorial" sections. However if this is a repeat, I do apologize. I also apologize if this appears rushed, I am trying to get this done before heading into a conference.

I have been reading the last few days that Roberto Orci has confirmed (as we already know - he's moving onto Star Trek) he is not attached to the next Spider-Man movie anymore, he also admits that Sony's franchise plans aren't yet clear.

Just to re-cap what Orci has said, he's made some comments which suggest that Sony may be reconsidering its options. "I am not officially involved in it", he told IGN of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. "I don't know what their plans are for that franchise. I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie".

He continues "I've read probably as much as anyone else. There's a love for The Sinister Six, the idea of Venom - there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business"

And yet, while "Spider-Man's not going to go away anytime soon", Orci admitted that "when it happens and how and all that has yet to be determined".

During the credits of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it was teased that a Sinister Six movie was in the works. Executives at Sony hoped that along with a Venom movie, the Sinister Six would help create a cinematic universe to compete with Marvel's. Due to the serious under-performance of TASM 2, the Sinister Six movie, along with the entire new Spider-Man franchise, may be DOA. Umberto Gonzalez (who I don't always buy into) of the tweeted: "RIP SINISTER SIX" yesterday, supposedly having "inside information" on Sony.

Even though nothing is officially cancelled, it's really no surprise that the franchise is in jeopardy. Special thanks to producer Avi Arad and Sony's executive meddling, the original script was tampered with to tease a cinematic universe. Marc Webb originally wanted to make a movie with more focus on Peter and Gwen's relationship and Electro's story. Instead, the executives crammed in Sinister Six as a subplot where Peter tries to find out what happened to his parents.

Neither the critics nor the fans bought the hype

If I were Marvel/Disney, I would think this is the PERFECT time to buy back the rights to Spider-Man and all of it's characters. OR maybe Fox will give up on trying to purchase WB and look towards Sony.

Keep in mind, it was long rumored all of last year that Sony was looking to leave the movie business due to major issues behind the scenes. They might have provided a band-aid fix, to which the full injury may now be coming to a head.

I PERSONALY would hold off on Spider-Man for a little while. As long as possible, to give people some time to breathe. There was no time really between the original Spiderman movies and TASM movies. To expect everyone to buy into another origin and then an introduction to poorly introduced/rushed vilains was a major mistake on Sony.

What do you think the future holds? Will Sony sell Spider-Man to the highest bidder? (Marvel VS Fox) Will they rush yet another TASM movie? Will they try a partnership with Marvel to have Spidey part of The Avengers in hopes of breathing new life into the character and story?

Sound off below - Thanks for reading (Sorry for any errors)

Roberto Orci doesn't know where the franchise is heading because he's no longer a part of it; he dropped his Spider-Man duties to direct Star Trek 3. Saying the franchise is doomed because he doesn't know where it is going is like saying "Don't expect to see Hulk in a standalone film because Ang Lee has no idea what is going on with the character". The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may have underperformed critically, but reaching over $700m is not underperforming financially for any film.

DEFINITELY hold off on any future TASM movies. They should have waited longer between Spidey3 & TASM, and certainly between TASM & TASM2. Rushing them I think was a big mistake.

No, don't wait, don't hold off.
Wait too long and you lose whatever momentum they have with the franchise.

Just make TASM3 and try to make it as good as possible having learned their mistakes. But definitely hold off on Venom and S6 until after that movie.

Good riddance. Sinister Six was a bullshit idea Sony crapped out to attempt to capitalize on the "shared universe" craze. Glad its not happening.

Why would Fox want to take over Warner Brothers? They are reigning supreme right now, with DOFP and DOTPOTA both critically and commercially acclaimed. I'm not sure if Fox still produces the Star Wars movies; but if so, they will make a whole lot of money when Episode 7 comes out. Plus Exodus: Gods and Kings should make them a whole lot of money too. I love Warner Brothers, but they just haven't been hitting the mark lately, hopefully Batman vs. Superman fixes that. But yeah, I was not expecting to type that much, but I think the rights to Spider-Man should revert to Marvel Studios and finally present him the way he deserves to be presented on screen; with the Avengers.

and if anyone cares, the villains in that image are Harry Osborn, Hammerhead, The Rhino, and Mr. Negative. only two of them are confirmed villains for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 but the whole 'Gang War' storyline is definitely a possibility for them. ye have little faith and lack imagination. the next 3 Sony/Marvel movies could be incredible!

If Sony were to sell Spider-Man, (which will NOT be happening anytime soon, let's be real) it would be to Marvel since it appears they have a pretty amicable relationship, save for Arad's crazy ass.

Honestly, I just want to see Spider-Man film rights back in Marvel Studios' hands....Marvel Studios has done the most amazing (no pun intended) things with its Cinematic Universe, more than any of the other studios holding onto other Marvel film rights....face it, Sony is a corporation with other sectors (i.e. electronics, video game consoles, TV's, Blu-Ray/HD technology and programming, independent films) whose revenue is not entirely prediicated on the the Spider-man movies...and you can only take Spider-man movies so far, in terms of crossovers, before you hit a brick wall where the only thing left is to crossover with is Marvel Studios' character rights...I think Sony has bigger fish to fry with its other business investments...Spider-man is chunk change profit in its overall revenue...I don't think its investors care if they give the rights back to Marvel; they care if Sony makes the next PS5 or 4K Ultra HD TV. Plus, they're not like WB, who holds all rights to all DC films and can afford to ruin Batman and Superman films, then reboot them. WB and Marvel Studios are film/TV film companies completely invested in film and TV. Sony is not. The only Spider-man film they got right was Spider-man 2 with Doc Ock. Don't tell me Marvel Studios' writers can't do something amazing with Spider-man after all the movies they put out since Iron-Man; they even introduce new superheroes successfully (i.e. Black Widow; Hawkeye; Nick Fury) without needing an origin story, let alone an origin story re-told over reboots; I think Marvel Studios can work Spidey into its MCU cleverly (Hello, Joss!) without making us yawn (i.e. NO MORE ORIGINS!!)
