UPDATE: James Franco and Kirsten Dunst on the Spider-Man Reboot!

The Spider-Man trilogy co-stars share their thoughts on the franchise's new direction.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Comics recently announced that Marc Webb will direct the first installment of its new Spider-Man franchise which begins with Peter's high school years.

"I don't have a problem with that," said Franco, who played Harry Osborn in the superhero franchise. "It worked out well for Batman and comics themselves have different artists and writers. I think it's perfectly fine."

But, he warned, "I think for the viewers you want a little space between Raimi's and Webb's flicks so you can get everyone else out of your head."

Spider-Man co-star Kirsten Dunst (who played Mary Jane Watson) also told the site, "It's sad to see it end. I think for Sam it was time for him to move on and so we're all going to move on with him. But we've had a good ten years."

UPDATE: MTV News spoke with Franco at Sundance and asked what his biggest disappointment is with the whole reboot process:

"I guess I'm a little sad for Sam and Tobey," he said, "I think they were a really good team. I think Sam invested so much of himself in that and he had the perfect connection to that character and that franchise and that world. He was doing probably his best work. I'm sad for both of them that they won't get to continue to do that. And Tobey I think was an excellent Peter Parker."

I too couldnt give a damn what Dunst says because I never got even the slightest impression that she cared at all for the character or films when I saw her interviewed!

James Franco however was one of the best things about the movies! I was gutted that he wouldnt be back for Spider-Man 4 and its a pity we wont see him in the role again but hopefully he'll go on to do other things because he's a great actor!

uk: I know, he seems like a cool guy to just hang out with.

I do think the reboot has potential. I'm not saying it's going to be awesome, or even great, I'm just saying that people shouldn't completely shit on the mere idea of a reboot when they know next to nothing about it. It makes no sense. And neither does proclaiming that it will no doubt be Twilight crap because it's set in high school, wait maybe they're right. I mean, it's not like high school was a big part of Spider-Man's history and it's not like there are no adaptations of Spidey in other media that are set in high school yet still rock. Hang on, yes high school was a big part of Spidey's history, and yes, Spectacular Spider-Man is set in high school yet it is spectacular (pun very much intended)

Maybe the stuff about the teen angst being the primary focus is a little worrying, but Spider-Man in his early years was exactly that: a teen dealing with the combination of being a super-hero and also balancing school, family, friends, etc.

And Marc Webb is a fine choice for the director's chair. He made a very character-driven and unique rom-com (a genre which has grown increasingly stale over the years) with great character-development, pacing, and acting. If he can deliver on the action, what's not to like? Remember, Jon Favreau before Iron Man = Elf and Zathura

I am still cautiously optimistic.

tyler@ i think i choose the wrong choice of word with awesome(and my laptop playing up and deleting my comment didn't help either)and very true that angst angle seems a little worrying but i always tried to stay positive even before a movie has been made and all the facts are in with at least a trailer to boot.

I think Kirsten Dunst was fine in SM. Everyone wants some gorgeous model bombshell, but guess what - that may work in the comic book, but it wouldn't work in a movie. The audience wouldn't believe that a high school nerd dates a some supermodel. Kirsten had a down-to-earth girl next door vibe, which worked for the part.

The dialog she had to work with however, was pretty lame, especially in SM3.

I am ready to move on as well. The first two were excellent but the third started a descent into hell that culminated in an ugly war between director and studio. Sony has mucked this up horribly. With Marvel Studios taking a larger hand in this, hopefully we can see an interesting rendition that stays closer to the source material, even if it is ultimate.

The time between these two movies will be 5+ years. The time between Batman and Robin and Batman Begins was 8 years. Like everything else in this world, things have sped up.

MULTI: Although I think Annalyne would make a great MJ, I think she'd make an even better Dagger! :)

Dagger

two of the worst cast roles in film history.

AnnaLynne McCord, who cant act.. would be just as bad. wait, she cant act at all so.. it's be worse. LOL

i not a highschooler so i don't think i wanna see a reboot with a prepubescent parker.

MovieTheaterLad,

Kirsten as Mary Jane was top 3 worst casted roles in film history. and Jake Gyllenhaal as the prince of persia might make top 5. ahahahaha..

ReillyParker,

I think its too soon to reboot. Oh well I guess Christopher Nolan really changed the game. Now everyone is trying to be slick and getting artsy directors and trying to be deep.

Y'all leave Dunst alone! I guess once you're over 25 people are done with you. That Annalyne chick is a toothpick. I've never seen her act but I'm sure it has as little substance as her body-fat index.

Jumpin Jeosaphat., Dunst was cool in the Spider Flicks
what I think is going on is y'all thinkin with your hormones and least thinking about talent.
Annalyne best get a breast implant if you want her to be Dagger she has no chest ;)
ReillyParker
ReillyParker - 1/22/2010, 12:29 AM
@thwhtGuardian I'd do her too but it wouldn't be like "Oh I'm doing Kirsten Dunst!" It would be more like "Let's see... well I'm not doing anything right now and I guess some action's better than nothing..."

You know back in the first spider-man she had a pretty decent rack... what the hell happened to it?

Oh and I concur with georgia49th, she needs some serious boobage to play Dagger...

James Franco was a great Harry (well, until he became all buddy buddy in SM3, but there were a lot've things wrong with SM3 so it doesn't count) It's too bad the new actors need to be fairly young, I'd be all for him reprising his role.

I want Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Jake Gyllenhaal as the next Spiderman! I think either one of those two would make a good spiderman. And I want the Green Goblin! if there gonna reboot this franchise then I want the whole green goblin plot done right and look right. and please finally feature the Lizard!

James Franco seems pretty cool, I always liked him through the Spidey trilogy. Somthing just bugged me a lil bout Kirsten Dunst, an I think shes got a bit of an ego anyways :-P.

I know a lot of peeps are still sore about Spiderman getting rebooted "but really", Raimi DID screw up a lot of things over the progress of those films -
Not being mean, there were parts every now an then that made any geek or geekette think = COOL!! :-D = like the fight with G.G at the end of the first (AND how much Dafoe played a cool Osborne), Doc Ock's tentacles attacking the medical staff, and the first scuffle Spidey had with the Sandman :-)...

But the bad -

. "Green Goblin 1's" suit looked more like an escaped baddie from a Power Rangers episode.

. "Forgive me for saying" - but they just made Parker a wuss outside of his alter ego, I know Peter Parker got bullied etc through school, but there was ALWAYS somthing bad or embarassing happening to him :-< an that got tiresome... Oh, an then he gets the alien symbiote "Which he only wore for one fight as spidey i might add" an spent the rest of the time wearing it under his clothes being a jerk and then decided to do this.... Cringe

. Harry turned into some kind of flying snowboarder rather than anything that resembled his Dad, comic or filmwise..

. Oh, and then they got some girly guy to turn into Venom... And then he died (for good) = that cheesed even me off'. :-(..

"Pant, pant, pant, pant".... sigh. Sorry, i know ive just ranted - But hey' long as they take it seriously maybe this new spiderman might suprise peeps like Incredible Hulk did ;-).

Ultimate SPIDEY reboot is gonna be ULTIMATE spidey Sh!T!

SPIDEY 90210 = SUCK!

Okay - Get the idea :-) :-)

An LEEE777 , I really do agree with ya, I am in no way a fan of Ultimate Spidey (from what ive seen of it). Hopefully they'll just borrow elements from both series rather than go full ultimate. I mean they kinda did that "a little" with some of the previous films..

In the meantime, I have it on a reliable source of info that below is a credible audition video for the role of Spidey now that Tobey Maguires gone :-) ;-) :-P

Poor soul..

Frack me! Ten years! Time does fly as you get older. Remember how they had to remove the teaser trailer after 9/11.

The only thing that scares me is we have a director with little work with effects; working on a big movie with a shoe string budget. 80 mill is small when talking blockbusters. What is this 1995? Is this Waterworld?

I completely agree with James about needing to distance the films. The thing is, I don't want them to have to retell the origin.....

@SH01138: I don't remember that, but I read about it in The Marvel Chronicle.......or was it wikipedia? Either way. Also, that's my only fear, man. Why not Vaughn? "Stardust" had some kool effects, so he knows something about them. Even so, we'll just see how the web spins out.
