Whenever a new film comes out that I'm a fan of I always end up over-analyzing the littlest details and jumping to my own conclusions, positive or negative. Naturally, that brings about some things I get very excited about and some things I'm equally anxious about in a bad way.

The fourth installment of this series is, naturally the next installment of the Superman story to come to film: MAN OF STEEL...

5 THINGS I'M WORRIED ABOUT

1. No Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, or Kryptonite

No Superman film is complete without these things, in my mind. That's like seeing a Spider-Man film without "with great power comes great responsibility" (cough*Amazing*cough) or if the next Batman film doesn't have Alfred in it. I'll be really disappointed if we don't get a cameo from Lex Luthor or something of the sort, as the other two I'm more willing to depart with for one movie.

NOTE: People seem to be getting confused about this. I'm NOT saying that I wish Lex Luthor was the main villain, or half the film would be dedicated to Jimmy Olsen or anything of the sort. I'm just talking about having some kind of a reference. As I pointed out in the comments, the use of mentioning Norman Osborn in Amazing Spider-Man is an example of what I think would suffice for these characters and Kryptonite.

2. Zod again?

This is the SIXTH Superman movie, and we still don't have Brainiac, Doomsday, Parasite, or hell even one of the easiest ones to translate into film: Metallo! Come on! Enough of the same things. Is the next film going to be about Luthor trying to secure real estate again? If the next film doesn't have someone new, it's going to really irk me. With all of these characters that are out there, there's so much potential not being utilized. Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy reused some of the same (Two-Face, Joker, Catwoman, Bane), but also gave us some different ones as well (Ra's al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, Scarecrow, Falcone, Zsasz), so I'd like to see more of Superman's rogues gallery.

3. Birth Controversy

I'm not shaking in my boots about this, but if the rumors are true that the film deals with this concept of a natural birth versus a test tube kid, it might be a little awkward. For the record, I have no problems one way or another, and this isn't an issue of politics. Rather, it's the people that are going to hate this movie BECAUSE of their personal feelings that I'm worried about. The last thing I feel like dealing with in the future is a bunch of people arguing that the film sucked because they were offended due to their religious choices. People already go nuts when you draw allusions between Superman and Jesus, imagine what might happen if you combine that with pro/anti abortion people and such...yikes.

4. Ersatz Replacement Characters

One thing I've always been critical of with comic book movies is that they typically create new characters for no particular reason as opposed to using a character from the comics. Did we really need "Dr. Ratha" in Amazing Spider-Man instead of someone like Smythe? How come so many members of the GCPD in the Dark Knight films aren't people like Bullock, Montoya, etc?

In similar fashion, this film seems like it has a big military presence in it. So if that's the case, why am I not seeing General Sam Lane listed anywhere? General Swanwick? Colonel Nathan Hardy? It just seems like a waste to me.

5. Amy Adams as Lois Lane

This is my BIG one. I'm completely not on board with this casting choice and I haven't been since the beginning. People complain about casting Laurence Fishburne as Perry White due to his race, which I'm ok with - but I don't understand why WB couldn't have spent $10 on a bottle of hair dye to give us a Lois Lane that doesn't have red hair. It's something that's bothered me with the James Bond series as well since Daniel Craig has been on board. Nitpicking? Maybe. But I don't think Amy Adams is attractive enough, nor young enough for this role as well. Could they have done worse? Sure. But that's no justification when they could SO easily done SO much better.

5 THINGS I'M EXCITED ABOUT

1. Action Sequences!

It's about time! Superman gives you the chance to do things in a film that no other film can do. All we've really ever seen in live action is flight, for the most part. I'm tired of Superman picking up airplanes and putting out fires and nothing else and it looks like we're finally going to get some legitimate punches in this movie.

2. Superman: First Contact

The approach of this film as a "first contact with aliens" storyline has me incredibly intrigued. It's a very different way to tackle the film and I have a feeling it'll make the connection between the audience and the Last Son of Krypton that much better in the end.

3. Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent

Just as much as I was disappointed in the casting of Amy Adams, I was ecstatic about Costner joining as Jonathan Kent. Unless something really, really odd happens in the translation that I haven't seen yet, I think this could quite possibly be one of the best casting jobs in comic book films similar to Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark.

4. Justice League References

The more, the better in my mind. I'd love to see something that references Bruce Wayne being missing (off training), a map that shows Central/Keystone City, a reference to the Green Lantern Corps on Krypton, anything like that.

5. A Superman Resurgence for a New Era

Superman Returns didn't do it, but I think this one just might. I was never the biggest Superman fan as a kid because I grew up after the Donner films had already become outdated. Hopefully, this film can bring children into the world of comics and show them just how important Superman is to the world of pop culture.

So what are some things that you're worried and/or excited about for Man of Steel?

NOTE: I will be posting a review on my website Fanboys Anonymous as soon as I can after I see the film, for those interested.

Good points. I'm a huge Superman fan, and I am excited for this because we are finally getting something different. We've had the same formula since 1978 (I loved the first two Superman films) but now it's time for something new.

Crappy points about why this might be bad,you are saying you are worried about this film because it doesnt have what the donner films had, olsen, lex and kryptonite, lex has been done to much,he aint a threat without his suit or kryptonite, but that has been done, and jimmy olsen not being in this doesnt make one bit a different considering he wont be working in the planet yet, With this being a fresh take on superman it makes sense to have zod,he is a worthy foe without using krpyotnite and with zod comes brainiac or even doomsday so you cant ask for to much in one film. The birth thing makes sense, they are an advanced race and if humans could breed humans that have no weaknesses or couldn't get cancer or something at all during its life we would,so it makes sense they would have test tube babies for a superior race. Not having all the character from the comics..well that worked for dark knight, and lois's hair is just nit picking lol

Wait till you see it. I did and it was awesome what a way to start the Superman franchise.

Amy Adams was fine the whole cast in fact were and did you even see the clips from the various trailers? She was Lois.

I'm surprised at the negative response to this. I've done four of these articles before and people enjoyed those haha. Must have touched a nerve with Superman...

@Superguy15 - Thank you. I'm excited about that as well. This is the good type of different, rather than giving me that anxious "why did they change it just to change it" feeling.

@Superman2013 - The inclusion of Jimmy, Lex and Kryptonite has nothing to do with the Donner films, which I find almost entirely boring and dreadful in so many ways. And I didn't say Lex Luthor had to be the villain, just that there should be a reference to him in here. And you claim I'm asking for too much in one film, but I also didn't say that I wanted Zod AND Brainiac AND Doomsday AND Lex Luthor AND Metallo etc...just that I'm not thrilled to see Zod again as the villain. It's similar to if we have a reboot of Batman and the first villains to start with are Joker and Two-Face or something.

@Brainiac3000 - That's what I'm saving the review for, praising the good and bashing the bad lol.

@DamienA - I can't imagine that I won't enjoy it, and I'm really excited to see it. From what I've seen, I'm still not sold on Amy Adams, personally.

David Goyer said the story chose the villain, not the other way around. For this particular origin story with the focus on him coming from two worlds and to which he pledges allegiance to, Zod was the logical villain. So yes 'Zod again', deal with it :)
KalKent853
KalKent853 - 6/11/2013, 6:56 AM
Also the first Lois Lane in the first newspaper strips had red hair also, so if anything they are being MORE accurate.

Zod Again

Because its not like we've had Loki as the main villain twice, Magneto as the villain 3 times, and Dr Doom as the villain twice.

It's a reboot. Your point is invalid and sucks.
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 6/11/2013, 7:20 AM
Also we've had Scarecrow 3 times, Bane twice and Joker twice.

No Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, or Kryptonite

You complain about Zod again and yet you want Luthor again who's been in 4 films?

Jimmy Olsen isn't a reason to be concerned.

Why would you have Kryptonite when it would affect both Zod and Superman? It's not needed yet.

Amy Adams as Lois Lane

Yes let's doubt the Oscar winning actress. She's a better actress than any leading lady in the MCU.

Smh. These reasons are very bad.

Ersatz Replacement Characters

Who cares who the generals names are? It doesn't matter. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Birth Controversy

The Christian Post reviewed the film and had no problem with it. They said there is some similarities with Jesus and Superman but its not disrespectful towards Jesus. Once again invalid reason.

Great Points made @ LEVITIKUZ....nitpicking about a movie you haven't seen yet is ridiculous....you don't even know what the whole story or the reasons they went the route they did....just enjoy the movie when it comes out

Only thing I'm worried about is that by the looks of it, the DC Cinematic Universe is getting a slow start.

From what I understand, Man of Steel is coming out 2013, Man of Steel 2 is coming out in 2015 and JLA sometime after that. Wish DC would go the Marvel route and release 2 movies a year.

I'm effectively keeping away from CBM till Friday. Regardless of how predictable it may be, I'm tired of things getting spoiled.

That's all I'm worried about.

Don't worry, we only need a Man of Steel trilogy to live the total epicness.
The Justice League could be between the second and the third ala Iron-Man.

I have to agree with you about Lois Lane and it has nothing to do with the hair color. Amy Adams just seems too nice to portray an assertive, spunky, ambitious reporter who would do anything for a story. That's just not how I see her. Will it ruin the film? Absolutely not she is a great actress and will probably be fine. But I have to think that in the same way that Cavill is so "perfect" for the role, Adams is not for her role as Lois Lane.

They do say with great power comes great responsibility in Amazing Spiderman (cough *Stupid* cough). Who gives any craps about Luthor. He's been done more than the Joker! Who gives a crap about Olsen...i'm serious who? You say Zod again when you just said bring back Lex. Zod's been in one movie. Lex has been in 6! It's a hair color. I think Adams will be the best Lois yet.

Ersatz Replacement Characters bothers the hell out of me in movies like this. I hate when they do that.

Then again you got X-men butchering characters like Bolivar Trask, Emma Frost, etc.

Wow, why is everyone claiming that I'm being negative yet they're focusing on the negatives and not the positive? Good lord, people. This is a website dedicated to this kind of thing lol.

Everyone is acting as if I said the film is horrible. This is just speculation...relax...and as I said, I'm speculating about GOOD things I'm excited about as well, not just harping on annoyances.

@KalKent853 - I understand that, but that doesn't mean it's any less valid of a concern. What if the next story dictated that we had Lex Luthor going after real estate? It's not a crime to want to see something different. If you're dealing with an invasion storyline, Brainiac could have worked in theory. It might be awesome having Zod and I could end up walking out of the theatre with him being my new favorite villain...but as of right now, I still wish we had something new. / If you want to argue that Lois had red hair and that's more accurate, Batman used to use a gun.

@Levitikuz - You're assuming that I was a fan of seeing those villains pop up every time. Also, why is everyone assuming that I'm saying I want Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, and Kryptonite to be huge plot points? I'm merely saying that I'd like to see SOMETHING with them in the film. An Oscar winning actress doesn't mean she's infallible. Time to shake my head at your black and white viewpoint response.

@Spidey10 - Saying "just enjoy it" is just as foolish as having reservations. Plus, aren't you jumping to conclusions by being excited to see it? Why focus on the negative things and completely ignore the positives that I'm bringing to light?

@marvelstudios - I'm hoping that they can pick up the pace (so long as it doesn't hurt the quality). A few references in this film could go a long way to building up that universe. That's one of the things I'm excited about.

@Tainted87 - I'm trying my best to avoid spoilers as well. It's tough lol.

@lucio7lopez - Here's hoping the second Superman film doesn't run into the same problems that Iron Man 2 did, if they go that route.

@highflyer - Me neither. I actually think it helps in a lot of ways.

@Forthas - Agreed. As I said, they could have done worse, but I can't help but feeling like they could have done better as well, which irks me. She could end up doing a good job, but that'll be one of my reservations until I actually see the film.

@xNightwingx - As long as we get some kind of a reference to Luthor, I'll be happy. For example, if the government says that Luthor is one of their primary contractors, big smile on my part.

@RedHood13 - I seem to remember them butchering the quote in a purposeful attempt to not say the actual line. Again, I'm not saying I want Lex Luthor to be the main villain or anything, just that I'd like a reference to him in some capacity - some kind of presence in the film. For example, in Amazing Spider-Man, they talk about Norman Osborn. Awesome. We didn't need to have Green Goblin again, but that was good for me.

@TheRaven20 - True, they run the risk of screwing things up when they do that. Another X-Men flub was Gyrich. He had more potential than one "we already killed him off" cameo lol.
ThunderKat
ThunderKat - 6/11/2013, 11:07 PM
The casting is quite odd. The story and directing will determine if it's all justified.
Lex needed a break! He's been in everything from the get-go!
"Smallville" wore out the Kryptonite schtick!
Jimmy is as hard to make relevant.

Metallo may seem like he'd translate to screen. His motivation and the rationale behind his Kryptonite heart...are lacking.
SnapperCarr
SnapperCarr - 6/12/2013, 12:59 AM
@ThunderKat No he's not. Clark is 33 in this movie. Have Jimmy be in his 20s so that he's old enough to work at the Daily Planet, yet young enough to have the Clark/Jimmy dynamic from the comics. Jimmy is usually portrayed as Clark's Robin, however in this universe they could tweak it to make Clark and Jimmy bros. Jimmy can be a bit immature and provide a bit of humor which critics are saying that this needs more of.
