More from Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder: Why it's taken WB/DC a long time to get Justice League Going

Deborah Snyder and Charles Roven discuss why it's taken to long to get Justice League off the ground. And why Nolan's Batman can't be a part of it. "It was never gonna be Christian"

While talking to SFX Deborah Snyder and Charles Roven commented on why Justice League has had such a hard time getting to the big screen and once again reiterate that Nolan's batman will never be a part of the Justice League.
SFX: "Why hasn't Justice League worked out so far?"
Charles Roven:
“Gosh, that’s a really good question. I thought that the George Miller movie was going to happen. I thought that movie was going to go, it went way down the road. They did casting. I honestly don’t know what caused Warner Bros to pull the plug on that one.”

Deb Snyder:"Nor Do I"

Charles Roven: “Like I said, we did have discussions back then and it was very clear that the Chris Nolan Dark Knight universe was its own self-contained universe and the movie of Justice League was going to have a different Batman. It was never going to be Christian.”

“But we never had a conversation where somebody said, ‘Hey guys, we’re going to pull the plug on this if you’re not going to let Christian Bale be in it.’ That conversation did not happen. So there must have been – I’m not saying that they didn’t talk about it – but I am saying that never entered our discussions and I honestly have no idea why George Miller’s movie never got made. It could have been budget, it was extremely expensive.”

"Warner is already in development on a sequel to "Man of Steel" and is expected to fast track that for release as soon as 2014, said knowledgeable people close to the studio. In addition, it has long been developing a "Justice League" team-up movie featuring characters such as the Flash and Wonder Woman that could come out as soon as 2015." from Wall Street Journal

If this is true it would seem forced.

I want Justice League but not for 2015, you can leave this year for man of steel sequel, 2016 a worlds finest movie, 2017 wonder woman and flash movies and 2018 the justice league.

They should be an Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Flash movie in between or else it would fail.

lol poor Hal, way in the background. I still don't know why Christian 'Batman' and Ryan 'Green Lantern' can't exist in a JL movieverse

If they're thinking 2015. Then they should do a Wonder Woman film with an Aquaman cameo, a rebooted Green Lantern with a Flash cameo all in 2014 so we can have a Justice League movie in 2015 which I think is pretty impossible.

not starting a flame war but I think a JLA movie can't beat the Avengers box office success, just sayin'

As much as i like the idea of a World's Finest movie, i think it is too soon to introduce a new Batman. I say get to work on Flash and Wonder Woman origin movies along with the MOS sequel, for a planned release summer 2015 for Wonder Woman, Winter 2015 for the MOS sequel, and summer 2016 for the Flash. Work on the Justice League movie for a summer 2017 release. Summer 2018 kicks off Phase 2 of the JLU with the new Batman

if Marvel studios can have 3 movies filming at the same time, while getting work going on as many as 5 other projects, there is no reason why WB can't get at least 2 movies a year out of the DC lineup.

@Banner

as much as i would like to agree with you, the JL has bigger characters to work with in comparison with the Avengers. A Batman solo film is pretty much guaranteed 250 million in North America, so just imagine what Batman, Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Aquaman combined can do.

the one thing Marvel has going for it over WB and the DC JL universe is that they built up to get to the Avengers over several movies and years. Teasers and planning started the excitement to build for the eventual planned team up, which finally culminated in The Avengers. a rushed JL movie will still do really well and come close to Avengers level box office, but a methodical and carefully put together JL movie that follows a pattern similar to the way the Avengers was put together over several movies will crush the box office take of the Avengers.

@l0rdleg0las... yeah, it's pretty ironic that a veteran and well respected movie studio like Warner Bros. is being kicked in the nuts by an upstart MARVEL films. I think you have to be passionate about the characters that you have on your stable like what Marvel did with their superhero movies, unlike Warner executives who are alarmed after they've found out that Green Lantern is gay I think they thought it was the Hal Jordan GL when it was Alan Scott GL lol

@banner I beg to disagree, and even if a Justice League movie can't beat the Avengers' box office haul, it would all come down to great filmmaking for JL against a good popcorn flick like the Avengers.

Nolan & Bale's Batman would be utterly useless beside Superman, not to mention the rest of the League. In the comics and animated series what Batman adds is Sherlockian super smarts and tactical genius (and money) but Baleman's just a growling vigilante.

I kind of wish that it would be the Bale Batman, just for story potential. I'm fascinated to see Cavill Supes and Bale Batman interact.

@Sithlord

are you seriously going to try and call WB comic movies great film making?

I really liked MOS, but it was pretty much a better acted Michael bay movie. odd and at times shitty dialogue, lots of action, that while awesome still bordered on the over the top. don't get me started on Green Lantern or TDKR.

just because it takes them forever to get a movie made, doesn't equate to it being a great piece of film making.

The Avengers or popcorn movie as you call it is a better film than every WB/DC movie not called The Dark Knight and is more fun than the entire WB/DC lineup.

@Asterisk

Bale's Batman would be terrible in a Justice League movie. he was little better than a punching bag in his own trilogy against foes of pretty much equal training or strength levels. put him alongside Superman and CO against Darkseid and he is dead 5 seconds after the fight begins.

@lordlegolas when I said great film making I was referring to The Dark Knight trilogy and yes that means TDKR too, if it wasn't a good movie then it would not be included in the American Film Institute's best movie list.

Im so happy that DC is finally setting up their cinematic universe and i thought i would never say that cause i never enjoyed any of the DC movies except for Man of Steel and thats because i could never see any other superheros being in those movies but with Man of Steel im already getting all these ideas and predictions in my head. Love this new direction.

JL probably won't beat the Avengers 2 first time because the Avengers has a cult following and basically everyone enjoyed it. Plus we all want to see where Phase 2 leads to. Maybe if JL is good enough it could go head to head with A3 with a sequel.

@lOrdleg0las - " don't get me started on Green Lantern or TDKR." I don't want to reign on your parade. But TDKR along with the rest of TDK trilogy is better than most of the MCU and Marvel films before 2008. They got SM1/2, Ironman, and Avengers with great reward. But don't act like DC doesn't got good films. Superman 78,80, Batman 89,92, TDK trilogy, Man of Steel are all solid films. Man of Steel is debatable but I find no fault in its cinematography.

@l0rdleg0las you said... "are you seriously going to try and call WB comic movies great film making?"

dude I'm more of a Marvel fan but I don't believe WB hasn't released a movie worth applauding. Batman Begins is an example of great film making story-wise. Maybe MOS didn't hit a chord with your taste but I believe it's only an introduction to a more magical sequel.

"reign on your parade" is just too interesting of a mistake to not comment on. One thing I love to collect are mistakes like this, such as "for all intensive purposes", phrases used by people who clearly have no idea what it really means...and thus shouldn't really be using them.

Eh, as stated elsewhere, I definitely consider myself a Marvel guy, but DC has some good ones too. (I even own Green Lantern on BR.)

I definitely enjoyed Man of Steel. The action was pretty solid, but the relationships between Clark and pretty much everyone were so damned compelling. Especially Jonathan, despite only a handful of scenes. It's impossible for me to think of MOS as a glorified Michael Bay movie, sorry.

That said, will I pop it in the bluray player more often than Avengers? Probably not, but it was really well done.

To really contrast, Superman 2 was on cable yesterday, so I really got to wallow in how far effects have some since I was a kid.

Batman would be the one of the best characters to be introduced in JL along with Martian Manhunter. Flash, WW and GL should have their own movies for sure, and while I'd LOVE to see Aquaman in his own movie, somehow I doubt they'd go for it but the new52 at least did this right.

Why would a man be fighting someone like Darkseid anyway? I don't care how much training he has, he shouldn't be fighting in hand to hand combat with a God.

The Justice League series showed how ridiculous it would look for Batman to fight someone like Darkseid. He'd smack him and Batman would fly across the room going like 60 and smash through a wall with debris falling down on him.

Oh but he's fine. He'd get up unaffected. I get that was a cartoon, but I get a little tired when people revert to the Justice League series for how they should do their movies when the cartoon was [frick]ing over the top. He's a man, if it was a movie it has to be grounded in real life at least a little bit. Batman would be a red puddle on the ground if he went through that.

I think its a common misconception that Bales Batman was an idiot. He was able to take out an entire, heavily trained Swat team before they realized he was there, he took down ninjas who trained longer than he did, he took down several gang bosses and left a lasting impression he was unbeatable to Gotham. He was smart enough to completely fix the autopilot in an experimental vehicle like the Bat, and thought ahead to orchestrate the entire ending of TDKR before he "died" in the explosion.

Just because its probably the most successful thing the Justice League has doesn't mean the cartoon should be copied directly. I hope to god they do something new with these movies.

"characters that no one knew anything about before the movies."

Which clearly made a big difference in box office. No one knew anything about Luke Skywalker in 1977, or Jack what's his name on the Titanic in 1997, or the main guy on Avatar when that came out. Having previous knowledge of a character probably helps, but clearly it isn't necessary. Either way, people knew the characters when Avengers came out, and they showed up a bunch. If a really good Flash movie, and a really good Wonder Woman movie were released before JL, the same may be true.

I still think it's smart to do JL first though, especially after Green Lantern. If WB doesn't have confidence in solo movies performing well before a team one, outside of the two heavy hitters, there's probably reason for it. What it's really saying is they don't have faith in their creative teams to do better than Green Lantern.

I think DC needs their own studio.

I think at least 2 movies need to be made with other JLers BEFORE they make a whole movie about them all. I think Flash would be the easiest then wonder woman.Avengers had years of other movies to ride off of before they "assembled"
