EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Laura Vandervoort on Smallville Season 10

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Each time we’ve spoken, a recurring theme was how badly you wanted to go back to Smallville. Now, of course, you’ve had that chance.

LAURA VANDERVOORT: I was so excited, because I really had a good time shooting season seven, and everyone would ask me after then, “When are you going to return?” It started becoming a theme, where the answer would be the same: “I don’t know, they haven’t asked,” and then they called.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Have you shot that yet?

LAURA VANDERVOORT: Oh yeah, we’ve shot it and actually I wrapped the day before we started season two of “V”, so it’s been done for quite a few weeks now. It went well.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Timing wise it worked perfectly.

LAURA VANDERVOORT: Yes, the timing worked. We were worried that it wouldn’t and we’d have to wait a little while, but had I started “V” I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to shoot Smallville, so we got it in there. And I just finished a film prior to doing Smallville, with Ray Liotta. So that wrapped, and then two days later I started Smallville.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: What’s the film with Ray Liotta?

LAURA VANDERVOORT: It was called Entitled, but they recently re-titled it to Bring The Night. It’s a psychological thriller. Ray LIotta is great – I enjoyed working with him -- he was in for a few days, and I had a chance to do a long scene with him, so that was neat. He was quite a guy. I was so impressed to work with him, and Victor Garber was in it, and to watch him work is amazing.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Stepping back to Smallville, did the experience feel different than it had back on season seven?

LAURA VANDERVOORT: It was a little strange, I hadn’t played her for almost two years. I had returned in season eight for an episode, but it was so brief, so it felt a little strange getting back into Kara. But once you get there, it’s not too difficult. I was excited and she’s almost a different character in season 10 than she was in seven or eight – she’s more mature, and she sort of figures out who she is. The tables have kind of turned, with her and Clark – in the past she would mess up and Clark would give her a lecture, and teach her about her powers, and when she returns the tables are reversed. She’s come back with more knowledge, and she’s teaching him things and giving him ideas about who he could be in the future. She definitely plays a huge role in his becoming Superman.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: What kind of role does she play in helping him become Superman?

LAURA VANDERVOORT: She’s in the red and blue, semi-Supergirl uniform, without the S, but she does do the brunette wig and glasses, which teaches him that he can have an alternate identity. He can have a face to the red/blue blur, and still be able to walk among the people with another identity. She kind of gives him that idea. I saw the photo – so I guess it is public knowledge that she wears that – but the second part of the reason, the producers told me, about wearing that, was to give him the idea to do it, to have the courage to show his face as the red/blue blur.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: I know the fans are going to be very happy about your return to the show.

LAURA VANDERVOORT: I hope so. And you know, I’m not sure if this is the conclusion of Kara, but I wanted to return for the fans, because so many fans at conventions are like, “V”’s great, but are you returning to Smallville?” That’s been the big question, so I wanted to return for them and to give them the chance to see her in her Supergirl colors and the uniform.

VOICES FROM KRYPTON: Was it kind of cool wearing those colors?

LAURA VANDERVOORT: I actually wore those colors through the whole show, but in a different context, like jeans and a red shirt. Like Tom Welling does. But that was the first time they had made the Supergirl skirt to look similar to the comic books, and the boots are the same. It was kind of cool – it was the closest I’ve been to full Supergirl, besides owning the little DC comics Barbie Doll version of her.

Tomorrow Laura Vandervoort discusses "V" and her character, Lisa

Yay Lauara in a skirt :) haha

I'm glad we get to see her become Supergirl, however i am abit dissapointed that she does it before Clark becomes Superman. Afterall he was the one that inspires her to costume up, not the other way around.

Well.....Smallville has definitely created its own take on the mythology. At this point I think the main thing is that the show ends with all of the pieces in place.

So clark puts on glasses and no body who ever knew him dont recognize him as the red blue blur....

I like the wiki on superman saying that most of his powers must be psychologicaly based vs just strenth.

That would justify so many things thats wrong with superman....

he could project a different appearance if this was the case.

grif, I really need to know: why do you find it necessary to log on to every Smallville-related article just to express that you hate Smallville? I just don't get it. Please enlighten all of us. Thanks.

the glasses thing has always been a problem for superman. from day one people have always laughed at how no one could recognize him just cause he was wearing glasses. its even been lampooned in every superman incarnation to some extent. its just one of the things we accept about the character. people dont recognize him without glasses, its just that way. i dont know why its such a big deal, you cant tell me no one would recognize green lantern or robin just cause they're wearing a frigen domino mask.

great interview ed. and its not just grif, it never ceases to amaze me how many people will take the time to click on an article, read it, only to write a negative comment. you would assume people would have better things to do.

Ok, how bout this... Clark Kent / Superman

Here is a guy that is out saving the Planet Earth in minutes and seconds... There is another guy who has a job and favors the other guy who is flying around at sonic boom speed so when someone gets the occasional picture of him (rare) he favors probably anyone with black hair and a certain complexion...

We just so happen to be let in on the secret... the rest of their world hasn't... I'd say it's pretty fair to say people may easily not see Clark Kent as Superman because why would they... I have co-workers that I barely know what they look like and they're in the next room right now... I can only remember about 10% of my high school class... People don't pay as much attention to each other as one may think....

SandMan101 - 9/7/2010, 8:12 AM
Well i mean its not really that glasses that hide clark kent. Its his attitude and persona. Superman is a God among men, and clark kent is just an average reporter. The glasses honestly just make him feel like hes at least trying to cover himself up. His disguise isnt really his glasses but his personality in general.
JoshWilding

Amazing work yet again Ed! :) Vandervoort is a great actress IMO and there are plenty of other great comic book related roles I'd love to see her in. LEE's suggestion of Mockingbird is one that I've always thought fits perfectly!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Regardless, I'm really hoping that they'll focus on what's important in this last season...Clark becoming Superman. We need less Oliver/Chloe focused episodes (and other various fillers) so the show can get over the not so great moments of the past few years and finish on a high.

As for Superman using glasses to disguise his identity, it's ridiculous however you try and explain it! Sure, I've seen explanations of him wearing baggy clothes and making his voice higher when he's Clark but as superdog points out, it's just one of those comic book things you have to accept!

@deadpool you really need to find a new hobby because your constant bashing of smallville is old. If you hate it don't watch and don't read the articles its that simple. But instead you choose to act like a fool and trash the show in hopes someone will argue with you. So take your little boyfriend grif and you to can slag off and piss on each other.

some shows that are better than smallville living in england,i don't know the tv guide in america.

but here are some shows that were on tv over the last ten years that shit on smallville.

in no particular order.

1.house
2.lost
3.heroes
4.lie to me
5.v
6.sopranos
7.battlestar galactica
8.true blood
9.the walking dead(i know we ain't seen it yet but it does look amazing.)
10.deadwood

its an insult to superman fans,if you lot stopped watching this shit by about season 2 or 3.

it would of been cancelled & we might be watching a decent superman tv show by now.

ten years to see him in costume & flying,i hope its worth the wait.

ten series = 22 hours a series...that works out at least 9.5 days of your life wasted on bullshit.

@ Ed Great interview! Thanks for all of the hard work you do for all of the Superman and Smallville fans out there. Your articles are always professional and top notch quality.

Everyone should just ignore the haters and try not to comment directly back to them. They usually don't comment on anything specific and just blurt out negative crap. At least when Teabag used to comment on these articles he would make funny jokes and post great pics. The rest just want to fight with people
