Smallville fans were hoping to see Tom Welling reprise the role of Clark Kent/Superman for The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event after it was announced that both Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh's incarnations of The Man of Steel would be returning, and now TV Line has made it official.

Not only will Welling's take on Superman play a role in the upcoming 5-part event, but The CW has revealed that we'll also find out what happened to Clark almost ten years after the conclusion of Smallville.

“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville,” EP Marc Guggenheim said in a statement. “Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it. So when we first started talking about ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”

Crisis on Infinite Earths
is set to begin on Sunday, Dec. 8 with Supergirl, before continuing with Monday's episode of Batwoman and Tuesday’s installment of The Flash. Then, after a month-long holiday break, the event concludes with the Jan. 14 episode of Arrow followed by a special installment of Legends of Tomorrow.

If they manage to bring Michael Rosenbaum back as well, I would love it. I watched Cryer's parts on Supergirl last year as well, and he was really good. But...

Rosenbaum is the one. If you bring Smallville's hero, it would be a shame to not bring in the villain as well.

But I'll be happy either way, GREAT NEWS!

I wonder who else they could get back for this. It all sounds all kinds of exciting.

Three Supermen sounds about right to help push back the Anti-Monitor.

@Smallvillefan21 - I don't think he will shave his head again, but it would be cool to see. I know one thing though, Erica Durance won't be there.

@litobirdy - that’s what I want. I want them to almost make it a running gag. Have him constantly just about it rip his shirt, or just walking into frame doing his tie up.

@litobirdy - hopefully he wears something, at the very least wears that red leather jacket he had in the final season

I would love it if they tied in with the Smallville Season 11 comics, where it did involve multiple Monitors, they could retcon it that this was the main Monitors test on the Smallville Earth

@dancingmonkey08 - Hiya dancing! I am glad you posted this because I don't know if many people are aware of the season 11 comic series. I think you hit one of the key issues in this article. I remember reading that comic series several years ago and I thought it was an awesome read. Even though most people will remember the TV series alone, there was a lot of content and characters in the season 11 comics that were really enjoyable....including Batman as well!

Point is, that series did in fact deal with the Monitors as you stated earlier. When CW first introduced the Monitor as well as Crisis on Infinite Earths, I immediately wondered if CW would fully embrace Smallville's Monitor crisis from the comics (considering how DC is very being on the multiverse). And lo and behold.,.....they announced today that Tom Welling's Smallville version of Clark will be there. I believe that Welling's Clark and his version of the Justice League defeated the Monitor in that comic series, right? If so, maybe he will offer the CW gang some tips on how to deal with this Crisis. Only time will tell when we actually watch the crossover.
