So
Smallville is finally over. First, I'd like to point out that going ten years is amazing. It is the longest running sci-fi series in North America, and no comic book show has ever done what
Smallville has done and frankly, none will probably ever do it again.
Some of the writing was fantastic. The romance in the finale between Lois and Clark was better than a majority of chick flicks that I've seen. I was disappointed that it still took seven years for Lois and Clark to get married AFTER their ceremony, but that first hour was amazing.
But
Smallville usually has issues when it comes to build up and actually delivering. The season 9 fight between Clark and Zod was very rare, and probably only happened because they both fought without super powers, which means it didn't cost a fortune per punch. But even with the budget in mind, it's pretty lame that Oliver took out Granny Goodness, Godfrey, and Desaad in one shot, especially since they have super powers. If Oliver had the Bow of Orion, that would have been a different story. But for him to just march in the room and take them out was totally anti-climactic. You are not that bad, Oliver. I also didn't like that Clark took out Darkseid by flying straight through him. They never should have touched him if they couldn't deliver him in an actual form. Then Clark pushing Apokolips away and using that to solve the darkness problem didn't quite do it for me either, but it was kind of hard to be that upset about it all when I was so giddy when he actually started flying. In the words of my mom, "The fool flew!"
Geez! This season certainly was a journey. In the premiere, he said he pushed himself harder than he ever had before and all he did was run from Smallville to Metropolis to catch the Daily Planet Globe. The finale he flies and moves a freaking planet!
I had a check list to make the finale great:
1. Clark had to fly (Which I guess happened once he came to terms that he is Kryptonian and it is freaking cool)
2. Clark had to wear the suit (I know there are complaints about all the CGI, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was more than the last two minutes of the show)
3. Lois and Clark had to get married (You can't be such a tease and not put out)
2 out of 3 ain't bad, but it certainly isn't perfect.
Lex's return was great. I'm glad he killed Tess, not because I hate her. I really like Tess, but I thought it was poetic how the Luthors just kept killing each other, almost Shakespearean. At least she got Lex back. It didn't make sense how Clark could be safe if Lex knew everything (though I'm sure he'd have backup information).
Every Oliver and Chloe scene I pretty much disliked. Oliver just hasn't been the same ever since he became a series regular and there was something particularly annoying about Chloe this season.
All and all, I'm glad that I had this show. I'm not happy about all the times that it frustrated me, but I'm glad it made it to ten years. I'm not certain what I'll do without Smallville to praise/bash every week.
But I thank the staff and everyone who made it happen.
