SUPERMAN: LEGACY Score Is Already Being Worked On; James Gunn Confirms No Young Clark Kent Flashbacks

James Gunn has shared an exciting minor update about Superman: Legacy, revealing what we won't see in the movie and confirming work is already underway on creating the Man of Tomorrow's new theme...

There's a huge amount of intrigue surrounding Superman: Legacy, but with the script completed before the WGA strike began, filmmaker James Gunn is able to continue working on the movie in earnest.

The DC Studios co-CEO continues keeping fans updated on social media and recently revealed that we won't be forced to sit through yet another version of Clark Kent's origin story. We've seen Krypton's destruction on screen more times than we can count, a sentiment echoed by Gunn.

"I think we've seen his origin enough in film at this time," he said, later responding to another fan to confirm, "There is no Young Clark" in Superman: Legacy.

That presumably means no childhood flashbacks either, another relief considering we're all very familiar with the hero's life in Smallville with Ma and Pa Kent. Hopefully, this means we'll remain in the present day, following Superman's journey into becoming Metropolis and the DCU's greatest superhero.

In other news, Gunn has also confirmed that the score for Superman: Legacy is already being worked on. We're guessing he's looking to come up with something completely new and original for Kal-El on screen, so it will likely be very different from what we heard in Superman: The Movie and Man of Steel

There's currently no word on who the filmmaker has tapped as Superman: Legacy's composer.

"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

John Powell should be the next person to have his take on the Superman theme. Guy can take epic, and elevate it to the next level.

The score will be 'paedo tweet' Gunn's selection of 90's-2000's rock music 😬

This is great news, as we already got 2 movies that told his origin story and life in Smallville.

Gunn, you gotta watch The Matrix movies. That's the kind of action a Superman movie needs.

DeadClunge
DeadClunge - 7/4/2023, 7:40 AM
@CoHost - this type of action comes hand in hand with collateral damage, which was a major issue for people in Cavills movies.

@GunnISaClunge - Which was a stupid ass thing to criticize. Cities get damaged in Superman's fights all the time. In comics. In cartoons. And now in movies.

He was fighting Kryptonians that had been training their entire lives to fight. He had never been in a single fight in his entire life. Sure, he was more powerful than them. But he was outnumbered when fighting Faora and the other dude. And Zod was much stringer than them at the end. He couldn't just move them somewhere safe if they don't want to go. And the World Machine was in Metropolis. If Superman had flown away why would Zod follow him? He just needed the World Machine to do its job.

There were a lot fair, and unfair criticisms about Man of Steel. Collateral damage was just silly.

@CorndogBurglar - The problem wasn’t the damage, it was Superman’s reaction to it, or lack thereof. He didn’t give a shit about the destruction that Zod just caused, and even worse, he went on to cause more. There was just no consequence to any of it.

Most disturbing though was his ill timed kiss with Lois, on top of the ashes of thousands, which just cemented Cavill’s Superman as the morally bankrupt husk of a superhuman he continued to be built up to be.

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/4/2023, 10:17 AM
@PlusUltra - He's in the middle of a fight for his life. Are we mad the camera didn't zoom in on his face and show him look concerned that a building got destroyed?

He obviously cared about the damage Zod was causing, otherwise he wouldn't even be there fighting.

And again, what was he supposed to do? Zod was almost as strong as him at that point. If he tried to leave the city and go to a less populated area then Zod would have no incentive to follow him because he just needed the world machine to do its job. He didn't have to stop Superman. Superman had to stop him. Zod just needed to make sure the world machine survived. So why would he follow Superman away from the city?

And it's also not like Superman could have just dragged him away from the city either. Zod wouldn't just let that happen.

And again, people praise Bruce Timm's Superman and Justice League cartoons for being such good adaptations, yet Superman was in lots of fights where buildings were destroyed in Metropolis. Particularly the fight with Shazam. But no one seems to have any issue with that.

And let's also not forget that this was his first outing as Superman. He had zero experience or fighting skills.

Like I said, Man of Steel has plenty to criticize, but the collateral damage argument, and breaking Zod's neck should 100% not be criticized.

I do agree with the whole kissing Lois on the rubble of buildings and dead civilians thing though. And the first 10 minutes of BvS blow my arguments out of the water as soon as Superman kills that terrorist by flying into him doing 100 mph and smashing him through a brick wall. But as a stand alone film, my arguments hold up.

I agree. I never understood the collateral damage criticism. Never made sense.

@CorndogBurglar - The fact that people acted so negatively to his fight with Shazam was a story point in Justice League lol. The entire thing was orchestrated from Luthor to make Superman look like a nut

Glad that it will probably be an original score. I hope they follow their own path with every other aspect of the movieas well. I want an interesting new take on the Man of Steel that stands out from the rest, not a repeat of things we've seen before.

I'm kinda glad to hear that. Superman The Movie, Man of Steel and even Superman & Lois had some early day scenes, so there's enough of that.

They were great in Superman The Movie because it was the first time, but Man of Steel really could've done without Clark's early days scenes. An opening like S&L's could work though.

I hope he finds some way to tell the story without going over the same tired scenes we've already seen. There are other ways to tell his origin (or any superhero origin story really) without repeating things verbatum.
