Television has changed drastically in the past year. With the advent and mega-success of Super Hero films has brought on a Golden Age of television shows based on the iconic characters. Shows that decades ago could not succeed (see the 90's The Flash) have since become some of the most successful launches of the season.
Even with the failed Wonder Woman pilot (ironically starring current Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Adrianne Palicki), TV has changed. Shows like Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder have upped the game of female-led TV and proven they can be power players. As of today, ABC's "Agent Carter" is experiencing mild success, and we await the CW's iZombie, CBS's Supergirl and Netflix's AKA Jessica Jones to find out what kind of success they can create.
Wall Street Cheat Sheet has posted an article about TNT's upcoming Teen Titans TV show, declaring it "unlike anything you've seen." But this declaration is not due to the fact that it is the first TV show based on an actual superpowered team, or that it is missing the likes of Beast Boy and Cyborg. Rather, it confronts these heroes replacements in "what sets this new version apart isn't the new team, so much as who composes it: Four women."
As the article points out, even fem-flag waver Joss Whedon recently stated that there is "old-fashioned, quiet misogyny that goes on" when it comes to casting heroes, or more specifically ponying up the cash to make a big-budget film. But television is changing that, and the upcoming Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel films may just put an end to the bad-taste-in-our-mouth films of yesteryear (Catwoman and Elektra) that caused the studios to clinch up and the thought of greenlighting.
As the article continues, it highlights reasons for networks not pushing forward more estrongen-powered hero TV, and declares one reason for there not being "more female heroes has been a denial of their marketability, something that can be proven patently wrong should Titans get picked up for a full run." As we await the balance of genders in superpowered TV, with the likes of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. giving us Skye-turned-Quake very soon, Teen Titans should give us not only our first glimpse of actual powers working together as a team on television, but one dominated by female leads. Hopefully they pack the right punch.
