Christopher Reeve's Children Confirm They Had No Involvement With His CGI SUPERMAN Cameo In THE FLASH

The children of the late Christopher Reeve have commented on their father's widely criticised cameo in The Flash last year and reveal which of his movie roles he was truly the proudest of. Check it out!

The late Christopher Reeve is the subject of a new documentary which has debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival titled Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

It follows the Superman: The Movie star's rise to Hollywood icon status and the horse riding accident in the mid-1990s which left him paralyzed from the neck down. His children, Will, Matthew and Alexandra, all appear in the movie and were on hand to discuss their father's immense legacy with Variety earlier this weekend.

While the trade doesn't share any specific quotes, it reveals that Reeve's children were asked to share their thoughts on his return as Superman in The Flash last year. The divisive cameo saw his Man of Steel brought back to life with visual effects. However, many have criticised the poor quality VFX and the moral implications of "resurrecting" an actor after their death.

It's said that none of them have watched The Flash and had no involvement in the cameo.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Will shared his take on his father's career being dominated by Superman and shared the role Christopher was really proudest of.

"In our hometown in Bedford, New York...the local movie theater went through a rebrand a few years ago. The person in charge of that shift reached out to me and said they’d love to have me screen a film of my choice of my dad’s. I responded, ‘Sure, but not Superman. We’re going to do “Remains of the Day.”‘ He was so proud of his role in that movie. It’s not a big role. It’s an important role in the film."

"He got to show a completely different side of himself. I knew how proud he was of that. Not that he wasn’t proud of Superman...but if he were here he wouldn’t choose Superman, he’d choose ‘Remains of the Day.’ I don’t think about the Superman films as much as I do about the swings he got took beyond this larger-than-life role."

Superman: The Movie continues to be a huge influence on the superhero movie genre; for example, it was a key source of inspiration for Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige when he entered Hollywood.

In 2022, Smallville star Tom Welling revealed what it meant to him to share the screen with Reeve - who played Dr. Virgil Swan - in the hit TV series.

"He was only supposed to be there for three hours, but I think he stayed for like six and a half. He was like, 'I don't want to leave.' The idea was he would shoot all his coverage, then he was going to leave and I would shoot all my stuff with someone else. But he wanted to stay with me!"

"It got to the point where his nurse said to him, 'I'm going to call the police.' He's like, 'on who?' She's like, 'On you! You're done, you can't be here anymore!' He just wanted to be there. It turned out great, and the story was fantastic."

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story doesn't currently have a wide release date.

Even if they had okayed it, who would admit to having any part of that abortion of a movie?

@DocSpock - looking at it objectivity from less than a year away, it's insane to me that that movie with that cast, script and director got made at all

@DocSpock - I liked the cameos but I also admit the CGI was complete garbage.

@ProfessorWhy - I can’t tell if you actually think that’s what the film is or you’ve just gotten it mixed up with something. Maybe there’s a joke I’m missing 😂

Um. Ok…….anyways. In hindsight the Donner films are terrible.

@JobinJ - well, you just lost all cred. oh, and Donner is only officially credited for the first film.

@lazlodaytona - Sure. Yeah, fly around the earth and reverse its polarization (which would literally destroy and kill everyone) to turn back time.

Can you imagine if they did that in a film today, people would lose their minds..lol

lazlodaytona - 1/21/2024, 7:41 AM
@JobinJ - Oh, I won't argue about the 'flying around the world' thing. Even as a kid I thought that was ridiculous. 90% of the film though was pitch perfect.
I feel the same about Wonder Woman. One of the greatest superhero films ever. Except....during the 3rd act the CGI fight was also ridiculous. Like Superman in the 3rd act (him flying around saving people, lifting the bus back on the bridge, rescuing Jimmy, and stopping the flooding), the last act in WW had an emotional aspect to it which was great (her realization who really was the enemy, Steve Trevor's sacrifice).

I guess I'm saying every great Superhero film has some ridiculous aspect during its run-time and the bad ones have a lot of ridiculous moments that dominate the movie throughout.

I get why everyone, including me, thought the cgi was complete sh1t. What I don't get is the uproar about it being disrespectful to have included characters played by actors who are deceased. I'm not wanting to start a debate whether it's morally right or not. What confuses me is why people are upset now, but when Star Wars started this process of digitally bringing back deceased actors no one batted an eye.

@FinnishDude - Oh. Sorry. I didn't realize that or the stink-up wasn't as vocal as it was for The Flash. Could be also i'm just a casual SWs fan and don't care either way.
Thanks for letting me know.

@lazlodaytona - There's always been some kickback ever since they brought back Fred Astaire for vacuum cleaner commercials. But I think the vocal outrage was louder with The Flash because of George Reeves.

bkmeijer1 - 1/21/2024, 10:56 AM
@lazlodaytona - for me it's because having Tarkin and Leia in Rogue One actually made sense narratively, while there was no need to have all these terribly CGI'd multiverse cameos in The Flash. It's only a bad thing if it's not used for the right thing imo.

lazlodaytona - 1/21/2024, 2:31 PM
@bkmeijer1 - i guess it was fan service .... gone wrong
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/21/2024, 4:49 PM
@lazlodaytona - the multiverse cameos definitely were there only as fan service. Leia was kind of a fan service cameo too, but at the point they filmed it it wasn't resurrection yet
