In the comics,
Flashpoint sees Barry Allen travel back in time to defend his mother from Reverse-Flash and save his father from a lifetime jail sentence as her murderer. He's successful, however, his actions create a radical chain of events that sees the DC Universe completely remade. Bruce Wayne is murdered in Crime Alley instead of his parents, a bitter war between Aquaman & Atlantis and Wonder Woman's Amazons threatens the entire planet, and Superman was found by the government instead of Ma and Pa Kent.
When Barry realizes that he can't misuse the Speed Force for his own personal gain and decides to set things back, the DC Universe didn't simply snap back into its post-Crisis state. Instead, there was a hard-reboot that became known as the New 52, with a number of characters and storylines falling into limbo. Quite a few fans are hoping that such an event occurs on the cinematic side of DC and that many of the DCEU's missteps similarly get swept away.
Out promoting their new comedy
Game Night,
Flashpoint directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein
discussed with Collider how they went from
Spider-Man: Homecoming to the DC Film Universe.
“They gave us a list of DC properties and said, ‘
Is there anything you’d be interested in?’,
in no way promising us anything at all,” stated Daley, revealing that WB approached them first and gave them their pick from a number of different scripts.
Goldstein added that he zeroed in on Flashpoint because he collected Flash comics as a kid, "
They were interested in us because of Game Night and Spider-Man. Because of that combination they did kind of say, ‘We’d like you to consider one of our movies.’ So we read a number of the scripts, and that was one—we’re huge fans of the character, I collected the comic books as a kid. It was an exciting possibility."
The duo went on to add that they were also attracted to the Flash because he's a hero that struggles to find the balance between his two lives, much like Peter Parker. Daley elaborated, "
Just the fact that the character is unique from other superheroes in that he doesn’t completely have his shit together like Superman does. It’s more of a ground-level superhero."
Flashpoint is currently rumored to have a 2020 release date.
