The Flash's second weekend at the box office was an unmitigated disaster, and not helping matters was a massive leak on Twitter yesterday morning.
Ever since Elon Musk purchased the social media platform...well, it's been at its worst. Among the changes are the fact Twitter Blue subscribers can upload videos to the site which can run up to two hours in length. That's good news for some, however, including those who enjoy pirating movies!
The entirety of The Flash - all 2 hours and 24 minutes, to be precise - was uploaded in the early hours and ended up being taken down at 1pm ET. During that period, it racked up a whopping 1.7 million views.
Not all those people were going to pay to watch The Flash in theaters (and some may have already done so), but this is bound to further hurt the movie's box office prospects. This was a very good CAM copy that meant fans reluctant to purchase a ticket could see all the biggest surprises for free on social media.
That was an issue even before The Flash was released, with early fan screenings killing a lot of hype once those cameos were shared online in advance.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended up being leaked in the same manner, but by that point, it was already a box office hit. In an effort to increase interest in The Flash, Fandango offered 2-4-1 tickets this weekend, an unprecedented move that Warner Bros. was likely responsible for.
We concluded our review of The Flash by saying, "Far from the greatest superhero movie ever made and not quite among the worst, The Flash is still another mediocre effort from the DCEU with appalling VFX and a messy story that the excellent Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle alone are unable to save."
