The biggest Marvel Studios news to come out this past weekend's D23 was the Thunderbolts roster being revealed. That was met with a slightly mixed response from fans, primarily because there's not much in the way of variety within the team (aside from Ghost, they're pretty much all Super Soldiers).
Still, we're undeniably excited to see how the movie comes together. If nothing else, watching these characters interact should be a blast, and that's something star David Harbour teased during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.
"There's a lot of really exciting work happening on this movie," he teased. "I also think it's a unique MCU movie in the sense that you've got a bunch of misfits and outcasts and losers and people who don't really live up to the super in superhero."
"And also all of us are such cool, interesting performers - I think audiences have some complicated feelings about a lot of us - and I think that's a terrific thing going in." So, they're not so much villains posing as heroes as they are a group of unlikely outsiders who step up to take the place of The Avengers.
It's an interesting approach to the Thunderbolts franchise, but one Hannah John-Kamen is very excited about. She played Ghost in Ant-Man and The Wasp and her story ended somewhat abruptly, so this movie gives her the opportunity to flesh out a villain who didn't get much time to make an impact.
"I was relieved," the actress said when asked how it felt to finally be invited back to the MCU. "I was like, 'Great, I can come back and figure out more about Ava and Ghost and how she's going to work in a team.'"
We'll be keeping a close eye on this movie as it continues to take shape, though it's one that's already generating a lot of discussion. Is the roster a disappointment? Click HERE for another writer's take on why Marvel Studios may have dropped the ball with this classic comic book team.
Thunderbolts is set to be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
