Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is finally playing in theaters, and while we've already broken down that big crossover in the movie's closing moments, it's time to dive into some of the other surprises.

Every Autobot and Decepticon has its fair share of fans, so the death of one of them is always a huge deal in these movies. Well, there are some casualties in Rise of the Beasts, and a pretty significant demise comes fairly early on.

Apelinq is introduced as Optimus Primal's mentor, and while the character has plenty of history in the Transformers franchise's comic books, he wasn't part of the beloved Transformers: Beast Wars TV series this movie takes so much inspiration from.

Alas, when Scourge arrives on the Maximals' planet looking for the Trans Warp Key, he lays waste to Apelinq in what ends up being a heroic sacrifice for the character.

A more familiar Beast Wars character who also meets their maker during the course of this adventure is the bird-like Airazor. Infected by Scourge, she loses her mind and leaves Optimus Primal with no other choice than to kill her when she attacks the movie's humans.

Bumblebee and Mirage are also killed by Scourge, though the former is resurrected by Energon and the latter is given the chance to live and fight another day courtesy of what plays out in the mid-credits scene

By now, you're probably hoping that Scourge gets what's coming to him and, yes, he's taken out by Optimus Prime (who makes good on his promise to hold the villain's head in his hands). Unicron, however, survives and will likely be the big bad of the planned Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover.

"Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world," reads the blockbuster's synopsis, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a '90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new breed of Transformer – the Maximals – to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons."

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to be released in U.S. theatres on June 9.

I will give this a pass for being a covid era production and will not be too critical of it

It is enjoyable for what it is

I saw this movie Friday and really enjoyed it. I thought the ending was better than Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Looks like it will be number one at the box office this weekend.

My God this film was hard to sit through. Felt way too long. And it was soooooo cheesy. I didn't hate it, definitely had stuff to enjoy but I felt the run time. Could have cut 20 to 30 mins of fat from the film. Waaaaaaay too much human storyline. I prefer the Bay films, they at least had some serious weight to them. This felt like all the cheesiest parts of 80s cartoons and few of the best parts. This is still not how to do transformers.

@TheVandalore - out of all the human characters, I liked Noah the best

@TheVandalore - All the worst parts of the original Bay movies were there (thin plot, racism, sexism, written for the lowest common denominator, macguffins, etc) but diluted to consumerable degree, imo.

I suppose it might depend on how old you were when the Bay movies came out though. To a teen, those movies might feel earnest in their tone.

Either way, no-one's expecting Citizen Kane from a TransFormers movie. It's not like you have to follow in Orson Welles footsteps or any....

...actually, I guess this movie actually is having to succeed Orson Welles, because he was the last person to play Unicron on the big screen.
But you get what I'm saying, right, this ain't high art and it shouldn't really need to be.

As far as reboots go, it was acceptable enough. Did things more faithfully than the Bay-directed movies but is still good, braindead, mass audience pleasing entertainment.

It's a decent enough beginning for a cinematic universe. So I hope it does well.

@Arthorious - I liked Noah. But we spent way too much time with him. Felt like 25% of the film was Watchung him go on job interviews and deal with family issues. We didn't even meet the Maximals till like the very end of the film and they got basically no development.

That being said, the actor playing Noah did a great job, and I enjoyed his bond with Mirage more than Sam and Bee. Even though it was incredibly cheesy, I even liked Noah getting his suit... felt slightly out of place but the shots with him and Optimus were bad ass.

I do like Noah. Still, I feel a ton could have been trimmed.

@ObserverIO - I don't really disagree with anything you wrote. I wasn't necessarily saying Bay makes high art, but for the films Bay makes they are super crispy high quality military action cheese. This film was clearly copying that style but you could tell it didn't have that UMPH!

@TheVandalore - that’s funny cause this is the first Transformers live action movie, that had the TF getting the most screen time out of the other TF movies.
ObserverIO

@TheVandalore - The actual Transformers always feel like an afterthought in their own movies. At least we have the upcoming animated feature, TransFormers One coming up, which should focus on the 'bots for once.

ThorArms

@TheVandalore - this film was barely 2 hours. Some of the Bay films push 3!!! The Last Knights runtime was excruciating

@ObserverIO - plot for transformers and comic movies always same never changes ever good vs bad maybe you like these videos?

Arthorious
Arthorious - 6/12/2023, 2:43 PM
@TheVandalore - make sense, the transformers movies have always suffered by spending too much time with the humans. Never really get to see the transformers fleshed out as characters outside of the usual suspects of Optimus and Bumble Bee.
WarMonkey

I love Transformers and Beast Wars but I was so confused watching this movie. Like, Apeling, Maximals own planet, Was there even time-travel involved, why does Scourge have all those different insignias as trophies from factions that existed in different time periods, why are the Maxiamls so large, why were the Maxiamls said to have been on Earth for only a few hundred years when it should be millions if they never left back to Cybertron, are they not from Cybertron now?!?!?!

Overall there was more that I liked then disliked but this really needed a better rewrite of the script.

TheVandalore - 6/11/2023, 8:42 AM
@WarMonkey - yup. The script was retarded.

"We Transformers has this Transformer tech tower we use to sneak into, but the tunnels are too small for Transformation to fit into bit perfect size for humans.... don't ask me why we built human sized only tunnels.... good thing we landed on Earth I guess..."

The script was painful. Honestly that's probably my gripe, the script needed to be cleaned up and improved. It was cheesy and stupid.

There was a lot to like, but a lot to hate on.

After watching this movie it was Optimus Prime ever hyper violent in the comics/show?
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 6/11/2023, 8:47 AM
@Arthorious - he has been in all of the movies. Ripping heads off and point blank blasting helpless enemies in the face. Optimus is ruthless in the movies and im here for it. I'm positive he wasn't ruthless in the cartoon, idk about comics.
StSteven
StSteven - 6/11/2023, 3:51 PM
@TheVandalore - I agree that in the original 80's cartoon and comics he wasn't ruthless, but in the more modern media he has been all over the spectrum, especially in the IDW comics (which were absolutely fantastic in my opinion, except for the most recent run before they lost the Hasbro license, which was too slow of a burn for me and the art was... not great).

dragon316 - 6/11/2023, 4:04 PM
@TheVandalore - in animated movie he would he killed more decepticons if unicron had not step in save megatron and his soldiers depends how you look at it and Optimus prime would have shot megatron in animated movie if hotrod had not step in

StSteven - 6/11/2023, 4:18 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA @ObserverIO @JoJo1982 @cyclopsprime - Actually, as the filmmakers and specifically Lorenzo DiBonaventura (producer) have been doing the promotion rounds for this movie they have said on multiple occasions that this movie is NOT a reboot (neither was "Bumblebee") and serves as a sequel to "BB" and a prequel to the Bay films. Here's one example:

https://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/new-transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-interview-gives-detailed-timeline-and-talks-spoilers/47731/

That being said, what I haven't heard yet is a clear explanation of how Unicron ended up inside Earth in "TLK" (I should mention that I'm not a Hasbro insider or anything, just a huge TF fan and frequent a number of different TF sites, so this is where I get my info from). However, recently Hasbro put out official character bios for this movie, and the Unicron one specifically mentions the Multiverse and using the Transwarp key to transcend time and space, so that could be how he somehow ends up inside Earth later on. If you want to check out those character bios you can see them here:

@StSteven - I didn’t see last knight I just knew about the unicron part

But that’s interesting also kinda hilarious that he got stuck inside a planet
StSteven
StSteven - 6/11/2023, 4:42 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Dumbass! Actually a (fairly) acceptable explanation could be that at some point in between this movie and "TLK" he actually does manage to get a hold of the Transwarp Key and ends up going back to the creation of the universe with the intention of reshaping it in his own image but to trip that far back in time renders him "unconscious" and his dormant form becomes the core around which the Earth is eventually formed. Kinda cheesy and contrived but acceptable.

You hear me, Hasbro/Paramount? Fix'd that continuity error for ya. You're welcome. Now send me a bunch of free shit (preferably the Masterpiece TF because those things are pretty damn expensive).
StSteven
StSteven - 6/11/2023, 4:43 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - BTW, that "dumbass!" remark was aimed at Unicron, not you. I probably should have specified that. 😊
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 6/11/2023, 4:55 PM
@StSteven - all good lol

Unicron is universally kind of a dumbass across all mediums lol
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/11/2023, 5:53 PM
@StSteven - So he was gonna eat his own self. I tried doing that once. Got neckache. I was SO close.
StSteven
StSteven - 6/11/2023, 6:02 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Well, Unicron is essentially a force of nature. If you get deep into the TF lore he's the polar opposite of Primus, so they are essentially a yin-yang with Unicron being the god of chaos and disorder and Primus being the god of light. According to the fiction, Primus tricked Unicron by turning himself into a planet (Cybertron) and Unicron followed suit. So it was like a prison for both of them. But the Unicron figured out how to turn into a robot and Primus followed suit by creating the TFs to eventually battle Unicron ("TF History 101") 😊.

So with that in mind, if you're a god disguised as a planet floating around through the universe/multiverse and consuming other planets preparing for the inevitable confrontation with your opposite/brother and no one's been able to take you down so far, you'd probably be pretty arrogant and therefore do some stupid shit as well knowing that you can get away with it. But sooner or later the time will come to pay the check. Wait... are we still talking about Transformers now?... 😉
