THE BOYS Showrunner Eric Kripke Confirms That We Haven't Seen The Last Of [SPOILER]

The Boys concluded its third season yesterday with an action-packed finale that left the fates of several characters up in the air. Soldier Boy is back on ice and may very well stay there, but showrunner Eric Kripke has confirmed that we definitely haven't seen the last of Queen Maeve.

After a brutal battle with Homelander which cost Maeve her eye, Dominique McElligott's conflicted Supe finally decided to step up and sacrifice herself for the greater good by charging Soldier Boy right through the window before he could go supernova and destroy the entire building (or worse).

This proved to be a fake-out, however, as we'd later learn that Maeve survived - albeit without her formidable powers - as we see her bid farewell to Starlight and leave to live a normal life with her girlfriend Elena.

This seemed like a well-deserved happy ending for the beleaguered member of The Seven (who does actually die in the comics), but it sounds like she will rejoin the fray at some point before the series ends.

"We were intentionally building to a happy ending for her, always, for a lot of reasons," Kripke tells TV Line. "One, she deserved it. Believe it or not, The Boys is a moral universe, and when you make the right choices, you get rewarded, and she deserved a happy ending with Elena.”

Hopefully, Maeve will be given a bit of time to enjoy her life away from the madness, but Kripke adds that even though “[Maeve and Dominique are] going to definitely take a break… the series will definitely not end without seeing Maeve again.”

One fan-favorite character who wasn't quite so lucky was Black Noir. Homelander murdered his friend after finding out that the silent Supe had been hiding the truth about Soldier Boy being his father, and while the former Payback member does appear to be dead as a doornail, we may see a different incarnation of Black Noir at some point!

“Here’s what I will say for any Black Noir fans that are mourning his passing: A completely silent masked superhero is super easy to recast,” Kripke notes. “And there’s a reason they haven’t told the public that Noir is dead. So this is not the last we’ve seen of Noir. This is just the last we’ve seen of that version.”

Was hoping for more catharsis with Noir before he was killed.

I thought the season finale was just okay. The season as a whole was good but something about the finale just felt off to me.

@TexasAvenger - for me, two things: I get the whole Ryan plot point and why Butcher and why Butcher turned against the Soldier Boy, but it felt a bit cheap. I mean, it was reasonable, logical in terms of writing, but I had this feeling as if I was watching an extended series where there has to be some "revelation" just to be able to continue the next season. Weird feeling. But the biggest problem is they didn't kill anyone except Noir (who seems to come back in some form). A-Train, Maeve and Soldier Boy should stay dead, because such ending perfectly completes them. As for Noir, I read the theory that his true superpower is immortality, that he is like a zombie, no matter how much his body is damaged (he lost part of his brain after all). And that revelation would be really cool, more "shocking" when you think about it, also somewhat based in what we've seen in the comics regarding supes and V, I remember the last fight with him and Butcher, where he was basically a living corpse before he finished him once and for all.

@TexasAvenger - besides, Soldier Boy wasn't killing superhumans with his "exploding", but he stripped them of their powers, so basically Homelander and Ryan would survive like Maeve and Female. Which again clashes with "Herogasm", where the supes either didn't survive or weren't deprived of their powers, like the A-Train that was inside during the blast.

@kamarova - I hadn’t thought of that but you’re right. In Herogasm a bunch of people died/were maimed, when we had seen previously that the blast would de power a Supe. Did A-Train get hit by the blast at all? Also I don’t like the whole “Oh no! This character is dead. Not really!” thing. They did that a lot this season.

@TexasAvenger - I think Vought will simply replace Noir with someone else for the public, because nobody knew how he looked like anyway.

@kamarova - Soldier Boy killed the first superhero chick and the twins with his blast.

So I don’t think they didn’t wanna take a chance on Homelander’s son and everyone else dying from it.

@TexasAvenger - A train sped off killing someone, before the blast got to him

@JoJo1982 - I thought he killed him after? Because there’s a lot of people hurt outside the house and Blue Hawk is telling him “you want to do this now?”.

Ahhh you’re right on that

@TexasAvenger - I agree. I felt like the episode was being drawn out, as if the writers ran out of creativity right in the end. After such a good season overall, the last episode was left me very disappointed. They could have at least let Maeve die.

I don't know how the hell she survived that

I understand the way they ended black noir's story, imo it made sense given homelander's point of view, even though it would have been nice to see him fight soldier boy, but maeve surviving feels like cheating to me. Like, I get that either way she's probably not gonna do much from this point forward, but her surviving that fall plus soldier boy's power-removing explosion doesn't make sense. But overall the finale was pretty good, can't wait for the next season.

So what exactly are the stakes and consequences in this universe then?

@Kumkani - same as any where you're dealing with near invulnerable characters I suppose?
