THE BOYS Star Valorie Curry Says She "Really Connected" With Firecracker Despite Identifying As A Lesbian

It may sound strange for any member of the LQBTQ+ community to identify with someone like Firecracker, but The Boys star Valorie Curry explains why she found her character somewhat relatable...

The current fourth season of The Boys sees Homelander recruit two new members of The Seven, with the super-smart Sister Sage and alt-right TV host Firecracker shaking things up in a big way and causing major problems for Billy Butcher and the gang.

Though Firecracker's abilities are fairly innocuous (she has sparkle-fingers, basically), the conspiracy theory-spouting extremist proves to be adept at manipulating the masses (though she likely believes every word she says) and leads a successful smear campaign against Annie January and her Starlighters.

Firecracker is an openly racist, homophobic boor - not exactly the type of person you'd expect someone from the LGBTQ+ community to connect with. However, actress Valorie Curry - who identifies as a lesbian - tells THR that she did just that.

“It sounds so gross to say, but I really connected with her right off the bat. It should be somebody from the community who’s getting to make a clown out of her. So there isn’t any ambiguity.”

“As an actor, our first job isn’t to judge our characters,” she continues, noting that “childhood trauma” explains much of Firecracker’s behaviour: “Right or wrong, she’s someone who believes she’s been marginalized.”

To be fair, Firecracker does have good reason to be resentful towards Starlight... even if she did take things way too far in "Wisdom of the Ages" and got a brutal beat-down for her troubles.

"The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power," reads the official season 4 synopsis. "Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."

Returning cast members include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti, along with new recruits Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 will be available to stream from June 13th, with new instalments dropping weekly through to the season finale on July 18.

What's up with this obsession from the media and Hollywood? We are on a site about comic book stuff yet scrolling through the news feed here it's filled with articles about cast and crew and the fantasy character's sexuality. Can we just talk about interesting and cool things instead of this weird obsession with who's boinking who?! This is turning into a feminist site now always talking about how actors feel and their sexual wants and needs. It's ALL SO FREAKING BORING!

Like almost every article here now has something political in nature, about sexuality or gender, or random attacks vs the fandoms calling them bigots (WITHOUT ANY EVIDENCE). The site is now closer to the Mary Sue or Vogue news sites then it is to what it was before, a site for nerds and geeks to get interesting news or information and discuss it with others.

Can we do a poll to find out how many users here give a shite about the actors sexuality or who they want their characters to boink?

@WarMonkey - Sounds like you're the one obsessing over the OCCASIONAL article relating to certain topics you don't personally have an interest in. The Boys is a political show, so yes, you're going to see a few stories focusing on the issues it raises. I personally find a story about a gay woman relating to her anti-gay character very interesting, and I'm sure plenty of others on here will too.

@WarMonkey - this show is obviously meant to slam the right and make them look evil to its audience.

I hate politics and I am not left no right. The only political group I can't stand is the Hollywood far left. They're bullies and try to make anyone who disagrees with them or on the right feel stupid. So, they use their platform, which is entirely unfair, to obviously make more than the country look ridiculous.

I wonder if the right had the same advantages and had the same platform to use how crucified they'd get by the 90% slanted left media (another group I can't stand).

@MarkCassidy - Gay men and lesbians have been playing straight characters since before I was born. I've been part of many fandoms for almost as long as I've been alive. We never used to be obsessed with talking about gay characters playing non-gay characters. Like when LOTR came out there were no places, except the weird sex obsessed fan fiction type, where people talked about Ian McKellen being in it as a gay man. He came out in 1988. No one ever asked him how it was like for him as a gay man to play an immortal wizard. If they did he would have called them out for the silly question. He's just one of hundreds of examples.

Do a poll and let's find out if many others are interested in that. I'm curious to see if I'm in the minority or not.

@WarMonkey - since when is sexuality a feminist only thing?
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 6/22/2024, 9:17 AM
@lazlodaytona - I agree 100%. I don't even really see it as a political thing, it's about people lying about others and trying to demonize or demean entire groups of people they all lump together and then trying to bully them. If the Right was doing the same thing claiming millions of people are bad due to lies I would be just as vocal, and have been many times. It was the Religious Right when I was younger trying to demonize people for not going along with what they wanted. Now it's the Authoritarian, deceptive, and manipulative Left using virtue signals as shields for their bigotry and hate as they attack others.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 6/22/2024, 9:21 AM
@Slotherin - You have ever hang out with a bunch of dudes, and the females in the fandoms, in the past talking about which characters they wanted to turn gay and then which characters they want them to hook up with? I never have. And let me be clear, not all women are feminists and not all feminists are female. And I mean the new version of Leftist feminism, not the real one that was about being treated equally and with respect in society.
Vigor
Vigor - 6/22/2024, 9:22 AM
@WarMonkey - "If the Right was doing the same thing claiming millions of people are bad due to lies I would be just as vocal"

Man that's wildly ironic considering it's the right who lump anyone coming from South as the border as "bad people"
Or how if you're for trans right then suddenly you run a child sex ring
Or if you hire a person of color that means you're trying to meet some DEI quota

I can go on and on. By it's definition, conservatives are not open minded people
Are you so programmed that you truthfully believe otherwise ?
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/22/2024, 9:39 AM
@Batmangina - I’m implying he’s being dishonest about not wanting to engage in this type of topic, since he’s ALWAYS engaging with this type of topic, or was that not obvious?
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 6/22/2024, 9:59 AM
@Vigor - Good examples, thanks. Let me help you out here. No one is claiming everyone from South America are bad people, they are against millions of people just be letting to walk across the border. Statistically speaking we know a small % of illegals commit crimes or hurt citizens every year, you can look up the data. So as the # of people come across the number of Americans who will be hurt or killed increases. It just happened yesterday to a 12 year old girl who is dead now and she's just one tragic story out of many.

Do Trans rights equal child sex ring, no. Trans people are citizens and have the same rights as the rest of us so when you say Trans rights that is a misnomer. If they are fired or are prejudiced against that is against the law already since like the 60s. It was the Left that equated the Desantis/Disney fight to trans = groomer. All Desantis did was ban sexually explicit material from schools like books with pics of boys giving blow jobs.

"Or if you hire a person of color that means you're trying to meet some DEI quota" is a straw-man argument. It is true that DEI is used to hire people by judging everyone by their skin colors and sex. The evidence is clear and numerous. Take the recent James O'Keefe video where he had a Disney exec saying they don't hire White people or light skinned Black folks. And that was just reinforcing facts that were already known for a couple years now. DEI is being used to hire people that would not have been hired without the program, which is the whole point of the program. Before the program if someone wasn't hired due to prejudice and bigotry it was against the law already. We also have Affirmative action programs that go back decades.

I'm not a conservative BTW. All this woke stuff and ideas about diversity and inclusion is actually stuff I used to discuss and champion while getting stoned with others in the 90s and early 2000s. I just don't like bullies or people that lie about others to demonize entire groups of people. You could say that triggers me when I see it especially when it's directed against nerds and geeks, which is the #1 most inclusive and diverse group of people dating back to before I was born.

"Revenge of the Nerds" is still one of my favorite movies ever and I suggest everyone should go watch it.

@WarMonkey - everyone rational is for rights of all citizens, and to have a secure border. But when your leaders are grouping a bunch of people in as bad or depraved, you end up scraping the bottom of the barrel for the deplorables. You're either not seeing these things being said or you're blatantly ignoring it because you're ride or die voter for the R.

@WarMonkey - I feel like an interview with an actor specifically about the role they’re playing in a comic book movie (or show) belongs here. This isn’t one of those “remember that actor who played a bit part in that one CBM that one time? Here’s a series of articles about the completely non-CBM role they’re in right now!”

I frequently complain on here about content that doesn’t belong, but this one fits, whether you like the content or have political disagreements with the content. Having an actor talk about her personal connection to the character despite what we would assume would have to be inner conflict? That’s an interesting read.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 6/22/2024, 11:35 AM
@FireandBlood - This type of topic is UNAVOIDABLE now because the DEI SJWs won't [frick]ing shut up about it.

That's the main problem with Identity Politics - one minor facet of a person is amplified to such a degree is that that is all they are.

It's exhausting and I took his post as being tired of shit like 'Despite Identifying As A Lesbian' constantly being the leading verbiage on a comic book website.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 6/22/2024, 11:37 AM
@Vigor - Just curious, does your dislike of blanket statements apply to the folks who immediately shout 'Racist/Phobe/Incel' at the first sign of any critique of 'inclusive' content?

Vigor
Vigor - 6/22/2024, 11:41 AM
@Batmangina - I think incel is being overused. To be an incel by definition is hard to qualify unless someone explicitly says so. Though there are telltale signs. I feel sorry for incels. They are negative and potentially dangerous people but deep inside society left them behind. They need psychiatric help just as much as I believe pedophiles need it.

So you'll never hear me say incel in any of my comments except this one. That feels like picking on the weak

People who cry woke or are opposed to diversity equity and inclusion are racist. Period. Full stop
They'll come up with every reason they can and cite youtube videos as their proof or justification. But to be actively against the betterment of mankind, white, yellow, black, or red... means you're the villains in this story and the simplest word to use is racist.
Sorry

@lazlodaytona - To be fair the show did make fun of almost every topic from Politics to Human Rights. I don't understand why people are all of a sudden getting upset? Because this particular season is focusing on the Right and Far Right more than anything? I think people are too focused on the identity politics of the show instead of focusing on the irony of it. We are all pawns in a game of political chess. And even though we don't have a real Homelander, The Higher ups pull a lot of strings and use people like Firecracker and Starlight to ignite problems. Starlight is just as bad as Firecracker in terms of playing dirty politics.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/22/2024, 12:08 PM
@Batmangina - This type of topic is easily avoided. Plenty of users on this site do. But those of you don’t do so out of choice, because the truth that you refuse to admit is, you want to engage with it. You want your side of the matter to be heard. That’s why you click on every one of these articles when the topic arises, and engage with it every single time. You can’t escape the truth of your own actions.

But deep this. You’re on a site catered towards superheroes, who for all intents and purposes, are mostly a bunch of those SJW’s you despise so much. Make that make sense.

@Batmangina - Here’s what I’ll make sense of; your response. You’ve got nothing to say, so you resorted to petty insults like a petulant child too young a minor to even go on “TikTok”. And that’s fine, but this back and forth is at an end.
