Joss Whedon Responds To Buffy Reboot News.........

In typically witty fashion, the man that will bring us The Avengers has responded to the news of WB's rebooting of his hugely popular TV series

After the news that WB would be moving forward with their movie reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer without any involvement from the show's creator, E!Online's Kristen Dos Santos mailed Whedon to get his thoughts. His response is funny stuff so here it is in full..

Kristin, I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER." Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

so this is the greatest shit i have heard all day Joss taking shots at the new reboot in the sarcastic Whedony fashion I have grown to love. Just as long as I don't hear Firefly reboot I wont get to upset, but this does really grind my gears to hear them just dumping whedon in every way from this.

Regardless Great find @Ror

I love Whedon! HE has the balls to tell everyone in Hollywood that he is pissed about this Buffyboot as much as the fans of the show. This shows that Whedon is not afraid to hide his feelings and if a studio says something he doesn't like about his project or vision, he will speak up.. This is why he is a great director choice for Avengers!

As a massive Whedon fan, I find this news disturbing to say the least..It will probably fail worse than the original movie.Of course they will replace all the wonderful metaphors of the series with mindless action.
I guess if they HAVE to do it, then Hayden Panettiere for Buffy.

I enjoyed Buffy for the most part but it was hit and miss at times. Still, what made it hit was definitely Whedon's writing. I dunno, I would like to say I'm shocked or surprised but I honestly believe that we will be here talking about the new Star Wars reboot one day the way things are going.

If you love Whedon and what he makes, boycott this reboot!!! It's one thing to reboot something that was done poorly, but to remake somrthing that isn't broke and with no attachment to the people that made it special is nothing more then thievery! Yes, Whedon lost the rights, but he didn't give them away or sell them. He was robbed by red tape.

He sounds like a total toolbag, but if he can make a good movie I don't care. I thought Buffy was stupid personally, and he asks "are vampire movies even popular anymore?" like he was the last person to have a successful (notice I said successful, not good) vampire story. The "Twilight" series has made huge amounts of money and continues to do so, and vampire stories in general are something that will never grow old. He talks as though he invented vampires.

That was funny and dead on. Hollywood keeps wanting to 're-boot' concepts that aren't old. The TV show was practically a re-boot into and of itself.

Once again, it is Hollywood's being bereft of original ideas. There must be a brain dead brain trust somewhere continually looking at movies/shows that are a few years old and saying "if we put Bieber in a building taken over by European terrorist with a gun...do you think Bruce Willis will play the beat cop on the radio with him to make it legit?"

I get that he was joking about the popularity of vampire movies, I'm just building on the rest of what he says along with this (about original work, which he wasn't joking on). My point is, if it's a successful franchise (again, not good, but successful), why wouldn't they try to build on it in some way? He should take it as a grand gesture to have been part of the history of something that may continue on and get the opportunity to see it.

Joss is the man! Its great to hear his opinion on this, he is damn right about it all

This reboot is a bad idea and it is even more proof that Hollywood is beginning to die due to the same ideas being flogged like a dead horse then rebooted to repeat the same process all over again

I really hope this Buffy movie fails

Cant wait for Joss and his Avengers movie & where the heck is that Dr Horrible sequel?!

@Ror
Oh god I hope you are wrong about a potential Star Wars reboot someday, well at least until the year 2100 when none of us will have to watch something so horrible

I'm pretty sure the "original work" line was pure sarcasm as well, as he followed it with "like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.".

he probably should have thrown in links to a laugh track after all the sarcastic bits, because its pretty tough to pick up in print, but the whole thing is pretty tongue-in-cheek.

Joss Whedon you are the effin man! Everything he has done was awesome. Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Serenity, Dollhouse and im sure the Avengers will kick just as much ass. Seriously are these Hollywood execs completely clueless?? Whedon has a huge following for HIS Buffy show, its characters and the whole universe they have created for it along the way. Millions of loyal fans that span over a decade. A remake that ignores all of this is nothing less than a smack in the face to not only the cast and crew of Buffy, but the fans who love it as well. I will definitely be boycotting this movie but i hope they have the common sense to see what a horrible idea this is and scrap it first!

Dear Mr. Whedon,
As a fan of your creations, I am deeply sorry for what the motherf*****s in Hollywood are doing to your beloved series. I cannot express the amount of grief I had when I first heard this horrible horrible news. Just hope they never mess with Firefly.

P.S. I did however think that after Buffy and Angel broke up that the storytelling got a little too out there. Just saying.

Guys even though I agree with what he is saying for the most part. I cannot get made at a company for wanting to remake a popular brand. Its a business. Yeah we can say they suck ayda yada yada but at the end of the day if we were in the same position we would do the samething. Now I would make sure I make the best product I can, meaning I would not deviate too much from the source material(like the case with Jonah Hex how they got a dude that only movie under his belt was a kids movie(Kung Fu Panda). I would make sure the script and the people on the movie are good. I mean you cannot just make one batman or spider-man movie series the character is too big for that. When we are gone those characters will still be here. If we did not have reboots or remakes we would have been stuck with the Adam West Batman movie. We would not have gotten the Carpenters version of the Thing or Casino Royale. Now if I was running thing I would not remake or reboot everything but somethings would get the treatment such as Superheroes characters(would not tell the same tell twice though it would be more like bond where you know the background of the character and such, I would not keep retaling the origin. The new Spider-man I will let off the hook because we never got a proper origin story with Gwen and stuff and maybe they could do a better job with Venom lol. I would not remake such classic as wizard of oz or nightmare on elm street etc because those are classic and can stand the test of time. They could have easily just told a new story involving freddy than remaking it(like for instance it could have been set many years after his last movie and have the dude just come back pissed and brutal becuae he is fed up with getting his ass handed to him at the end of everymovie. You know and get England to play him with the pissed off Freddy make-up like you saw in Freddy vs Jason movie lol)

Says the guy making a movie based off a comic that started in the 60s. I don't know what to say, honestly, he's doing the samething. What else is an Avengers movie other than feasting on a carcass from our youths?
Orehrepus
Orehrepus - 11/24/2010, 12:50 AM
@AllyndNoir: There's a little bit of a difference there.
I'm not nitpicking here. But it's a different medium.
Yes, The Avengers have been around very long.
Yet you never saw an Avengers movie before.
Buffy, on the other hand, you've seen on film-based medium.
Even if it's only on TV, but it's more or less the same.

Other than that, as other have pointed out, he is being sarcastic when he said that, you know. Because right after the words you left off, he followed it with "...like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself." You know he didn't make up the Avengers idea himself, right?

if they really do commit this travesty, i wonder if WB is ready for the EPIC FAIL that this movie will be compared to the Luke Perry one. Yes, it will get press from the fans HATING it, but that same fan base won't support the movie.
