Writer Behind The BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot Gets Fired; Project May Be Buried

The reboot that made the internet fanboys rage may be in for a rough time. Screenwriter Whit Anderson has apparently been let go, and the movie might not be able to survive the struggle....

By bleedthefreak - Dec 22, 2011 01:12 PM EST

When it was announced that an a reboot to the beloved cult movie and insanely popular TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer would be going forward without its beloved creator Joss Whedon, the idea didn't exactly sit well with most. Aside from the original Buffy, Kristy Swanson, who played the character in the debut movie in 1992, nobody who played a part in the Buffy verse liked the idea of the Joss-less reboot. With the hiring of its new, eager screenwriter and Buffy fan Whit Anderson being announced, the idea became almost unanimously trashed around the world. Even Whedon didn't have many kind words to spare after hearing his creation would be getting a redo, saying “This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.”

According to Hero Complex, Whit Anderson isn't exactly working any magic with the vampire slayer, which has resulted in her apparent firing. According to two of their sources, Anderson hasn't given them the reboot they were hoping for, saying she "fell far short of expectations and, in the end, was rejected completely." The source continued to explain a little more into the firing: “If you’re going to bring it back, you have to do it right,” one key player in the project told Hero Complex. “[Anderson] came in with some great ideas and she had reinvented some of the lore and it was pretty cool but in the end there just wasn’t enough on the page.”

Though a search for a new screenwriter will be starting, the momentum the project (apparently?) had may have taken a serious dip. The future of the continued on screen adventures of Buffy may remain a mystery, but be sure to swing back here form updates as they come.

Of course, they were probably told that it would be easy to top the original movie, but there would be no one to make a reboot without the TV series cast...FIRST!!

yeah, but he was still trashing the idea, he was being witty, but he was still expressing his dislike in his own witty way.

THANK GOD!

This is my favorite TV show, ever.
And, I would hate a reboot....no matter how great the cast!

If they want more Buffy, then bring back the ORIGINAL cast, for a movie or something.
It would not be hard, and it would be great to see!

yeah this really shouldnt be touched or rebooted...

a reboot is good for something that was suckage, not something that went on for 9 years!!

reboot Jonah Hex, or Green Lantern...

I pray to god this doesn't happen. Buffy isn't Buffy with out Whedon involved, I would have rather if they did a movie with the original cast, that's set after the series with Whedon directing it of course.

could make a new television series, perhaps with Jennifer Lawrence or Amber Heard in the role of Buffy, with Joss Whedon as the producer of the series. ...

Sarah is sexy! She just brought Buffy's personality to life!

Eliza is better though...Faith was my favorite slayer. She is so sexy, it is not even funny.
Sexiest woman alive.

@AvalonKnight- Do you know what sarcasm is? Because the sarcasm he used in that statement is truly, painfully obvious. Did you believe him when he said the Avengers would be 9 hours long, too? lol, I just don't get it.

"fell far short of expectations and, in the end, was rejected completely."

So no one at the studio thought this may have been a possibility? This woman has absolutely no writing credits to her name and no one had even heard of her until she was hired for the Buffy movie.Reading her interviews, she came off like a fangirl who was getting a chance to write fan fiction based on the show she loved growing up.

Buffy is one of the most lauded genre franchises, up there with Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who.Why would anyone leave this project in the hands of a newcomer? It makes no sense.

This should never ever be rebooted!

Buffy was an iconic, amazing show that was probably the show that ignited the growing interest in Sci-Fi/Fantasy shows at that time.

That specific genre was hugely popular at that time, with Charmed, Angel, Farscape, Smallville etc ... being so successful. I think rebooting that show now would be a bad decision.

I'd rather them make a brand new show with a similar premise rather than make a show and consider it a reboot or continuation!

I'll have to go all Dark Cherry on their ass.

The reboot will be called "Muffy: The Neuterer of Werewolves". I think that there should be a rule that delays reboots of successful franchises for 15 years. It would keep these money-hungry jackals from cashing in with fan-fiction.

Just bury this project in a deep, deep, hole. I would rather see a gritty reboot of the Muppet Babies before I would watch this shit.

Just have a show about Witches (The Secret Circle is doing well!) or maybe Red Riding Hood the Werewolf Hunter or something!

If Whedon is not involved it's a nonstarter.

This reboot was a hideous joke in the first place as the so called "writer" had zero credentials apart from being a "really big Buffy fan". Pathetic.

@Todd you need to check out the interview that joss did a while back http://gointothestory.blcklst.com/2009/01/interview-joss-whedon.html . It's well documented that the studio F**ked about with AlienR and even Joss himself pokes fun at it in Buffy. He was also screwd over by the studios with the original buffy film. The big wigs in Hollywood are well known for dickin about with scripts. Kevin Smith original superman movie that never saw the light of day is a perfect example of creative differences. An individual wanted superman to fight a giant spider which never happened but the individual got his Giant Spider into the Will Smith movie Wild, Wild West and look how great that was. The only thing Joss was guilty of was not turning round and sayin your turning this into S**T go F**k yourselves. I have high hope for his take on Avengers because of his knack for dialogue and making it about more than just one person. After all it may have been called buffy but lets be honest it was more about the group.
