Joel Silver Wants To Make Swamp Thing Movie

Joel Silver Wants To Make Swamp Thing Movie

Producer Joel Silver says he would love to make another Swamp Thing movie, this time in 3-D!

Silver talked to the press today (via ScreenCrave) about "Whiteout" and mentioned an interesting scoop at the end.

"I'm developing a picture now that I'd like to do… I'll hopefully do Swamp Thing, which is a movie we've had for a long time. We think that would be great to do in 3D. There are a couple of projects I'm thinking about (for the format) but not everything."

When pressed for more details Silver said:

"Maybe going to do it. I like it."

There have been two Swamp Thing movies already, the first a Wes Craven cult classic, which I'm sorry to say I still have not seen! I believe the second one is just an out and out piss take. Anyway, if they stick close in any way to Alan Moore's vision of Swamp Thing then this could be something special. With crossovers and cameos galore from the likes of John Constantine, Sandman, maybe even Batman! Yeah I know, I'm dreaming. More likely this will be another schlocky 3D horror pick with hardly any resemblance to the comic.

Hopefully we will find out, and I get to be wrong.

Thanks to Firstshowing for the news.

I used to like watching Swamp Thing. They used to play it all the time on TV. I never see it anymore. With the right visionary director, script, special effects, and cast, it could be a really creepy-cool film.

Grease @ Lol, cool but you do know MANTHING is just a cheap rip-off of SWAMPTHING don't ya, plus MANTHING was just a cheap direct to dvd movie, im hoping BUDGET for SWAMPTHING! Well its WB so not too scared lol.

PHINES @ I loved the tv show too, not a spot on the comic but it was kinda cool!

I hope DICK DUROCK has some kinda cameo in this, like LOU did in both HULKS!

If they keep this HORROR it could outshine most of the horrors today! An hopefully we'll see more like SANDMAN, DEATH and PREACHER 'n' stuff to follow!

Swamp Thing!!

I was reading Superman and Swamp Thing - The Jungle Line yesterday! He seems so alone

Firstly, to do Swamp Thing right, they would have to adhere to Alan Moore's take on the character. That involves some complex plotlines and guest stars like the Demon, and Phantom Stranger. Unfortunately we know DC can't get their shi*t together on things like that, so the movie will suck. Which is a shame because it's such a great comic. Second, Greased you're not a comic snob if you only read GL and big Marvel crossovers. That makes you a comic tourist.

damn this would be good. hmm any possibility of Grundy on the big screen. Doc Fate. these along with Swampthing would make my Dc dreams come true. as long as that pansy Superman isn't in it.

AWESOME!!! Though I hope they adapt Alan Moore's amazing run on the series otherwise it might not be that good.

Swamp Thing started out as a horror comic about a man that became a plant monster, but Moore made it so much more. He became an Elemental with ties to nearly all facets of the DCU. Man Thing was a rip off that never progressed in any way. I actually hat that they are mentioned in the same sentence.

If Silver has any sense he will hire a director that 1) loves the comic and 2) has hopes to eventually tie the DCU together in the way Marvel are with The Avengers. Now i don't expect Swamp Thing to be turning up in a Justice League movie, but just even a nod that they exist in the same universe would be enough.

Love it.....do it.......and for the record they both came out almost the same time. Do a Man Thing for real, not that syFy crap.

Trivia: What comic muck monster was out before both of them ?

MarkCassidy - 8/29/2009, 10:58 AM
lol, Minotauro still championing Avatar! Hey man keep iot up, i hope your right. But your insinuating here that Swamp Thing is unoriginal? Dude the comic is one of the most original and ground breaking you will find. The movie is based on that. Cameron's movie seems to be based on Dances With Wolves meets Fern Gully. I did say SEEMS!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 8/29/2009, 11:07 AM
Well i like friggin' SWAMPTHING an like the look of AVATAR! ; D

Skunk @ MANTHING was brought out becoz of DC's SWAMPTHING being a success.

I reckon that MANTHING though if it had budget, could've been something good!

Hey Ror, I made my comments, if you know what I mean.

Man-Thing... seriously? First time I've heard of this character. What a cheap rip-off with a homo erotic sounding name.

Oh and... if you read only GL, you ARE considered a comic snob.

@Ror, Hey, I like the swamp thing as long as I can remember. And if it doe's make it to the big screen! I'm all in. My suggestions ain't to favor anything. It's just that "orignal" concept that still gets me with some people on here..Or also the "3D Wave"! some call it!?...

Joel Silver produced a hell of alot of rubbish movies, hopefully he doesn't stick to form as I really like the character Swamp Thing.

Hell yeah!! I have wanted another Swamp-Thing movie for a long time. The first two where great. I will admit the second one was a bit cheesy but the fight scene in the trailer park with the mutant bug guy was awesome. Swamp-Thing is one of characters that you have to be careful with. It can be really corny if you get the wrong team together. This could be really cool if done right. I don't care about the 3D aspect, I hope Avatar doesn't start something that will get way out of control. Bring on Swamp-Thing. I wonder who would be good for the character..someone put a poll up.
AxlKomix
AxlKomix - 8/29/2009, 5:01 PM
I'll go see it if it ever happens. I wonder if Moore'll get pissed when they make this movie like he did with Watchmen. I know he didn't create the character, but they'll most likely use his version.
DDD
DDD - 8/29/2009, 5:34 PM
I like Swamp Thing...if done right it could be creepy horrific fun! If they have a big budget this time and don't use any camp and keep it Like Moore's vision it would be awesome!

I also like Man-thing, that movie they made wasn't Marvel's Man-thing at all! I sure wish they would stay true to the source material in these movies! Iron-man is a Mapquest of a movie they need to use to follow superhero's true characteristics and vision!

@SkunkApe1 I believe the answer is the Heap, but I could be wrong.

At anyrate I know I'm correct in believing that swampthing is an offshoot of man thing and that both owe their origins to the heap and also solomon grundy and before that the various swamp and bog men myths and folklore. It's an old concept and even moore's version wasn't that original. I kind of hope this stays in preproduction hell.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 8/29/2009, 7:56 PM
Actually Swamp Thing is a rip off of Man Thing. Man Thing came first by several months, and is known to have inspired the creation of Swamp Thing.

I like both characters but Swamp Thing is cooler by far, and his books were better.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 8/29/2009, 8:04 PM
lol I never read the heap. Was that good?

The Man Thing movie was so horrible. I have a little space on my dvd shelf where I stow all my marvel movies together. I have Man Thing but I don't keep it with the rest because it's just so awful. So few people know it exists, and it's really for the better.

kick @ss! it better b the alan moore st, thow telling that story needs a hell of an origin!

Damn LEEE we were just talking about this the other day. I'm really hoping we get to see characters such as Abby, Chester, Phantom Stranger, and Woodrue! For a loner Swamp Thing had a stellar supporting cast.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 8/29/2009, 9:34 PM
meh, the heap was more of the same, an old 40's pulp type monster. The bogman legends are interesting, and I can see the allure of making a hero in that mold, but there isn't enough there to make it all that interesting. It gets far to repetitive.
DDD
DDD - 8/30/2009, 12:13 AM
@Darth, Swamp Thing is cooler by far than Man-thing and I even like Marvel a little bit more than DC. But Swamp Thing has a more violent and horrific dark vibe!

The Man-thing movie was deplorable! What a waste of celluloid!

They should get a good horror director to do Swamp Thing!
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 8/30/2009, 5:59 AM
Do you guys like the original Swamp Thing movie?
lol As a kid I did but I don't know if I would now. I probably haven't seen it since I was 11 years old or so.

DarthMulder, I do like the original Swamp Thing movie very much. Both films and the television series were some of my fondest childhood memories. I recently picked up Wes Craven's Swamp Thing at Big Lots for $3 and showed it to my son. He loved it and I was suprized how well it held up after 26 years. Go out and find a copy for yourself and watch too. Its good fun. Also I forgot Ray Wise (Devil from Reaper) plays Alec Holland. I got a real kick out of seeing a younger Ray Wise.

@ greasedlightning

first of all, you're comparing a movie made by a legitamate director with a sci-fi channel movie, and come on, this coming from someone who's name and avatar is for Grease?? lol
