Game Of Thrones Producers On Tonight's Episode's Shocking Twist

Obviously if you haven't watched "Baelor" yet, and haven't read the books, huge SPOILER WARNING. Ok, no complaining if you click now!...

In tonight's episode of HBO's fantasy series, main character and hero of the story Eddard Stark(Sean Bean) is executed by the bloodthirsty Joffrey Lannister. You win or you die indeed. It's a real kick in the guts for many fans, and was for me while reading the book. But I also know from reading on that it wasn't simply done for shock value, Stark's death sets the real story in motion.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with the show's producers to ask them about it, and they also reveal that we may be seeing another big name or 2 step in to take over from Bean in future seasons..

EW: When reading Game of Thrones, what was your reaction to George(Miller) killing off Ned?

David Benioff: I was in shock. From your training in seeing so many movies and reading books, you know your hero is going to be saved. Is Arya going to pull this off? Does the queen have some trick up her sleeve? Someone has something planned, because they’re not really going to chop off his head — right up until the moment when they chopped off his head. I was shocked, and then admiring of George’s ruthlessness. It’s a tough thing to build up a character and make somebody as memorable and impressive as Ned and then get rid of him. But at the same time it leads to a story that is so much more suspenseful because you truly have no idea what is going to happen and who is going to survive. In stories, you usually have an idea who’s going to make it out. Watching The Town, which was a really excellent movie from last year, you knew who was going to survive and who will die within the first 10 minutes. This was something completely different. And I said, “Wow George, there’s a reason you have such devoted followers because it makes such great reading and panicked reading because you turn the page not knowing who’s going to get what next.”

EW: Since he is the best-known actor and such a central figure, does losing Sean bring about any concern whether viewers will stick around for season two?

D.B Weiss: In addition to his character, you’re setting up other characters that goes forward. The idea is this show gets its hooks into people enough so you’re going to want to know what happens to Tyrion and Arya. So even though we lose key characters, we’re still invested in a lot of characters so you’ll want to know what happens next.

EW: Does Sean leaving the show open up the possibility of hiring another star for characters who are introduced in season two?

Benioff: There are a bunch of names up for discussion, so it’s quite possible. Certainly there hasn’t been any kind of mandate that we need to cast big names, but there are some well known actors who would be great for certain roles.

I read the books before the show started. That still didn't prepare me for tonight's episode. Simply amazing.

The books are amazing and the author has major balls to kill off the main character, awesome! If anyone has ANY question about season 2 being boring now that Ned (Sean Bean) is dead read the second book it is even crazier than the first. G.O.T KICKS ASS

Great show tonight. Glad folks who haven't read the books are getting that same moment of... omfg... he didn't did he? that we got when reading the books. Still felt a bit of that when watching after having read them several times.

How ironic. My DVR of Game of Thrones ends and Fellowship of the Ring is on. Poor Sean Bean can't catch a break!

@level1paladin

It's actually pretty big news. If it wasn't for that, I could care less about being on Main. But since you feel the need to comment, I feel the need to tell you to eat a fat one. Enjoy!

I saw this on the main before I saw the episode so I was constantly wondering what the shocking twist was all about. When Robb got Jamie Lannister I seriously thought that was the twist. Never did I expect this to happen! Man oh man this show does not disappoint. Can't wait for the finale.

I gave it a chance with a couple episodes. It was a coin flip with this or Camelot. I saw Morgan nude in the bath tub and never looked back! The excitement coming from my CBM brethren may inspire me to give it another shot, but Camelot is da B(o)(o)(o)M right now!!!

I'm about 1/3 of the way through A Feast for Crows (the 4th book in the series) and the twists and turns just keep on coming. Ned's demise shows that no one is safe and the good guy does not always prevail in the end - and that's a huge part of what makes GoT so compelling.

52 year old African-American female. GoT rocks my world. I watched all previous episodes in one sitting 2 weeks ago On-Demand, after watching episode one and being INSTANTLY HOOKED. HBO is, always has been, and always will be the SH**! I won't buy the books because I want to be surprised. Eddard Starks beheading left me stunned, mouth hanging open, teary-eyed, outdone. There are too many pooh-butts posting online saying how they are through with GOT because of this. MORONS! I'm sure they are pea-brained Americans looking for illogical happy endings in everything. GoT has got me for the duration. Well done HBO. Thanks for staying true to the writers vision and story. PETER DINKLAGE ROCKS.

@Suspense...GoT is not Lord of the Rings. It's not a black/white good vs evil story. It's more like real life where most folks are shades of gray.
