FRIENDSGIVING Star Malin Åkerman Reflects On WATCHMEN's Legacy; Calls It A "Visual Masterpiece" - EXCLUSIVE

Friendsgiving (which is released this Friday) star Malin Åkerman opens up to us about her role as Silk Spectre in 2018's Watchmen, while also revealing whether she's watched the HBO series yet...

Malin Åkerman (Billions) stars in Nicol Paone's (Chick Fight) new comedy Friendsgiving, which is available in theaters, on demand, and Digital on October 23rd before its DVD and Blu-ray release on October 27th. It's an absolute riot, and the impressive ensemble also includes Kat Dennings (WandaVision), Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Jane Seymour (Smallville).

In the movie, Abby is looking forward to a laid-back Thanksgiving with her best friend Molly. But the friends' plans for a quiet turkey dinner go up in smoke when they’re joined by Molly’s new boyfriend and her flamboyant mother. Throw in some party crashers including Molly’s old flame, a wannabe shaman, and a trio of Fairy Gay Mothers, and it’s a recipe for a comically chaotic holiday no one will ever forget - even if they wanted to!

We recently caught up with Åkerman to discuss her role in Friendsgiving, and will bring you the full interview later this week. Of course, while we had the actress on the phone, we had to ask about how she looks back at the legacy of Watchmen, a movie we mentioned was arguably ahead of its time.

"I feel so lucky that I got to be a part of that project," Åkerman started. "It was a real big experience for me. You're right, I think that the material itself is so interesting and intricate, and thoughtful and thought-provoking. Now, would have been the time [for it], but at the same time, I'm sometimes glad it was before its time. It's something to be proud of, and I think Zack Snyder did a fantastic job."

"Visually, it's just a masterpiece. As an actor, I struggled with it because it was a big undertaking and a big project for someone like myself who hadn't done many projects just yet. I didn't have much under my belt to draw from. I felt like I was out at sea a little bit among all these veteran actors, these beautiful, wonderful, theater actors, but looking back, I'm super proud, I think it's beautifully executed, and has a really interesting message. It's a powerful film."

We also asked whether Åkerman has had chance to check out Jean Smart's take on Silk Spectre in HBO's Watchmen, to which she replied: "It is next on my list because HBO turned into HBO Max and I don't have it and need to get it to see it! I've yet to do that, but can't wait. Every time I talk about Watchmen, people are like, 'Have you seen the show?' Of course, I need to see the show, and I want to. I just haven't gotten around to it yet!"

The Friendsgiving star has previously talked openly about how difficult it was to work on Watchmen as an inexperienced actress, but it's great to know that she looks back at the project with such fond memories. Zack Snyder's movie is one that generates conversation even twelve years on, and it is hard to escape the feeling it would have been a much bigger hit had it been released in this era.

She was good in Billions! Not sure why they didn’t bring her back. Spot on about Watchmen though.

Probably the most miscast role in a film filled with miscast roles. Thought Greengrass’ casting idea of Hilary Swank made a lot more sense

yup, visuals. the only thing that Zack Snyder is good at.

While the cinematography in Watchmen is beautiful, I feel like it didn't suit the aesthetic of the comic.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - To be fair it wasn't trying to suit the aesthetic of the comic. Just like the Watchmen comic was a deconstruction of comics at the time, the movie was a deconstruction of super hero movies at the time.

Its why it has so many pokes at super hero movies. Like nipples on Ozymandias' suit, for instance. Or all the slow motion action scenes. Or how all their costumes were rubber suits.

I'm surprised how many people miss that.

@CorndogBurglar - Seems like a half-assed commitment. If he really wanted to make that statement, then he shouldn't have tried to replicate panels 1:1 and make all the other characters but Ozzy look comic accurate. The movie should have been its own thing.

Sure it was visually engaging, but I don't think the movie holds up much.

I’ve never thought Zack Snyder’s visuals were that good but I’m also not big on that stuff. A lot of you are able to spot things within movies that I just never really pay attention to nor knew anyone paid attention to it until I came ‘round these parts.

Think I should watch watchmen again. I see a lot of people around here saying they didn’t think Zack got the point of the comics but I never really thought much of the movie. 20 year old me found it hard to get through those 3 hours(!!!)

Feels like I’ve been waiting forever for Friendsgiving to come out.

Credit where credit is due: Zack Snyder has an eye for visuals. That's where he shines the most. But where storytelling's concerned...dead horse.

How does a movie like Friendsgiving" get made? Some fools have to put up the money for it.

I rewatched Watchmen not too long ago and it's fine. The comic is way better but the movie does a decent job at adapting something that's practically unadaptable. Malin was the weakest of the cast and I felt that they took out all the depth from Silk Spectre II's character and made her just the eye candy love interest.

"Visually, it's just a masterpiece." So is Malin.

zacks best work.
mainly because he could f up the script because it was all layed out for him.
too bad about Man Of steel and BvS. But when he is slavishly loyal to the source material good things happen. 300, dawn of the dead, watchmen.

As soon as he starts getting his own bright ideas, complete disaster.
