AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.LD. Star Elizabeth Henstridge Discusses That Big HYDRA Twist

Elizabeth Henstridge plays fan-favourite character Simmons in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and she talks here about the big reveal from last night's season two episode and drops some hints about what may be to come for her as part of HYDRA. Check it out!

"They sent us all the first episode and it was revealed that Simmons was imaginary," Elizabeth Henstridge told Entertainment Weekly when asked about the very different direction season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is taking her character in this year by having her go undercover in HYDRA. "They took me aside and said she’s coming back, but she’s just gone for a second and roughly explained that she would be working undercover in Hydra. You just never know because they could tell you, “Oh, don’t worry, you’re undercover,” but then they could turn it around and say, “Oh, you’re not actually undercover. You’re a triple agent.” They tell you what you need to know to act your scenes, but anything after that, you never know. Any of us could still be Hydra. You can never relax too much on that, but I knew she would be undercover straight away."

When asked about whether or not we'll see Simmons struggle with her new role as a double agent, she added: "This is where we see that actually she is quite a good liar these days. She’s worked on her weaknesses and can turn them around to work for her. It’s not that she’s necessarily comfortable being undercover. It’s a necessity that she wouldn’t choose if she had to. She’s worked at it, and the fact that everybody thinks she’s a terrible liar is working for her at this point because they won’t be suspecting that she’s undercover or that she has ulterior motives. She’s a smart cookie and she’s figured out what her weaknesses are and figured out how to use them to her advantage." Some fans weren't happy when last week's promo and a clip revealed that Simmons was working for HYDRA, but the fact that she's still loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. came as a relief. However, that obviously doesn't mean she's safe from the organisation!

"You should be worried," Henstridge replied when asked if she's worried Simmons will end up being brainwashed. "She’s wanted to move up in Hydra and be in a position where she can provide more information. She’s achieving that at the end of this episode. Whether she’s fully realized it or not, that’s going to come with an awful lot more danger and potential brain washing. She doesn’t know exactly what it is that they’ve done to Donnie Gill, but she knows it’s something mental that he can’t control. She’s now in a very dangerous situation, but she has Agent Coulson on her side, who knows that she’s there, so it’s not like she’s alone."

Great episode last night. Simmons being in a constant state of danger works really well for that character.

Last night was great. The Simmons angle didn't come across forced at all. Very good writing. And Donnie was a complete badass. Hopefully we get a costume of some sorts for him later, but his characterization is on point.

On a side note, checked out Flash last night. Not bad. Still some of the same CW traps that Arrow does, and that love triangle crap is already sickening. And Stephen Amell was easily the low point on the whole episode. Worth another look next week though.

It's a shame they've killed off Blizzard... I was hoping to get more long lasting small villains who could cross over into other shows, ie the Netflix series or a Punisher show

@FilmDork1221

They didn't kill Blizzard. They never found the body. Skye mentioned it to May when they were on the Bus.

Was anyone actually surprised she was undercover? It was quite predictable.

We all knew she'd be undercover but with her in Hydra they are using her to introduce a ton of new characters and like Agent 33 it seems most are from the comics. Still not sure what everyone's obsession with costumes are..can someone explain it to me?

@TheGodButcher

I enjoyed Flash. Gustin impressed me, and the action and effects were good. It's just the tweeny crap that irks me. Hopefully it doesn't become more prevalent.

I enjoy this show as much as Arrow, if not more (the brooding melodrama soap opera style of Arrow can be overbearing at times), but I really don't get why the writers and producers of this show don't understand what a secret organization is. Last season, SHIELD symbols were on everything, this season Hydra symbols are on everything. Its silly and distracting. They keep missing opportunities to add suspense and drama to this show as well. Why not lead us on about Simmons a bit, make us question her allegiance a bit before letting us off the hook? Let Skye find out and confront Colson until he relents. Easy missed opportunities there to keep this show on the air and interesting

What is Raina? Who is Skye's father? Will Fitz ever be 100%? Will Simmons make it back? Ward??............ AoS got me hooked!

I'm absolutely loving this series right now. The writing has gotten tighter from last season. They've taken Coulson out of the field and imo, works better as character in an administrative capacity. They've taken some of the main focus off Skye as Coulson's pet project and are making her a valuable asset of the team. She's more sure of herself and she took Blizzard out without hesitation, cool as ice (pun). Her story arc is still intact and playing itself in the background until the big reveal. Simmons is more than just the cute quirky scientist from last season but she's now a real spy, a mole in HYDRA's backyard. Love what's being done with Fitz. The boy has got some real problems and some darkness in him. He was willing to torture Ward out of revenge, which brings me to Ward. Last season a lot of people didn't like the character because he was bland and boring. The writers have made everyone do a 180 and now he's the guy everyone loves to hate. May was just the bad a$$, silent bus driver last season but May's turning out to be the bad a$$ field commander this season and I like it. The Marvel villains have been good this year. The Absorbing Man and Blizzard were awesome and I hope the give the Blizz some kind of containment suit before long. Great stuff.

For all the people that don't watch anymore you people don't know what your missing. The whole episode I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going on. For a second there I thought maybe coulson was hydra when they first meet at her apartment. Anyways great episode last night and can't wait for next week's.

This is the first I'm hearing of her being a "fan-favorite character". She's certainly not one of mine.
