Now, as everyone knows, Marvel is unrolling a series of Netflix shows, intended to building up to a crossover in The Defenders. Now that we have showrunners for Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Iron Fist will be the next series to begin production, followed by Luke Cage. Likely, this means they will begin looking for a showrunner within the year, and I think I know who it may be.
KEVIN TANCHAROEN
Now, you may be wondering: Who the hell is this guy? And what the hell does he have to do with Iron Fist, and more importantly, why would Marvel pick him? Well I'll tell you.
MORTAL KOMBAT
One of the biggest fixtures of Iron Fist is his martial arts, and Tancharoen has plenty of experience in that regard. He wrote and directed Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Both were lauded for their fight choreography and martial arts, which puts him in Iron Fist's wheelhouse very well. This definitely puts him in a position where he would be a very good fit for Iron Fist. Both Iron Fist and Mortal Kombat involve a lot of mystical elements as well, and as seen in particularly Rebirth, he can also stick to the gritty, realistic stylings that Marvel and Netflix want for the shows. Though he is currently working on filming Season 3, but it is likely that by the time production is complete he will be free to work on the show.
NETFLIX MODEL EXPERIENCE
Another thing that makes him stand out is that he has worked in a Netflix-like digital distribution setup before. Both Sequestered (a show which he directed the second half of) and Mortal Kombat: Legacy were both digital releases where all the episodes were released on the same day. Given that not many directors have experience with that kind of format, this puts him in a category of a select few directors acquainted with the distribution model, which will likely appeal to Netflix.
WHEDON CONNECTION
There's been a noticable pattern between the majority the people working on Marvel's TV shows: working with Joss Whedon. Take a look:
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D - Joss Whedon's Brother and His Wife
Agent Carter - Former Dollhouse Writers
Daredevil - Former Buffy/Angel Writer (Along with the person he replaced, Drew Goddard)
The sole exception to this is Melissa Rosenberg on A.K.A Jessica Jones, but even then she was likely chosen because she was working on the show back when it was meant for ABC.
Kevin Tancharoen has not only worked on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, but is also the brother of Maurissa Tancharoen, one of the show's showrunners.
So what do you guys think?
