Following her unexpected departure from The CW's live-action Powerpuff Girls pilot earlier this summer, fans were quick to speculate that former Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starlet Chloe Bennet may have exited that show to potentially join Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion, reprising her role as Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake.
Well, as it turns out, that was far from the case. Bennet, after a slightly inappropriate public encounter with a fan and hundreds of messages in her DMs, has finally come out to shut down all the speculation by vehemently denying her involvement in the upcoming Disney+ series.
In her latest Instagram story, she states, “I am in no way attached or involved, even at all or a little bit, in the Secret Invasion Marvel thing. I honestly don’t even know what that is.” While she's already debunked multiple reports of joining the MCU, she says she chose not to address these particular rumors previously because she was hoping everything “would maybe blow over, but it has not.."
“It’s gotten to the point where every day, I’m getting hundreds of messages about this, and now I'm getting approached in person," she continued. "Today it was in the tampon aisle at Target, a little inappropriate - so I figured I would clear the air. I have no involvement in that. I'm sorry to break the news to you about that, but hopefully, this puts that to rest.”
With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. not considered official MCU-canon (per Marvel Studios & Disney), any rumor that these characters could potentially return was always a stretch, especially considering the nearly decade-long schism between Marvel Studios and the now-defunct Marvel Television.
However, with the multiverse currently cracked wide open and Marvel/Netflix stars Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal (as well as former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) all rumored to potentially make their official MCU debuts in the not-so-distant future, we can't say with absolute certainty that the S.H.I.E.L.D. characters could never reappear - although it seems quite probable that we'd meet variants in a soft reboot of sorts with possible recastings, rather than the versions from the ABC series.
