The latest actor to join the already top-notch cast of The Mandalorian Season 2 is Timothy Olyphant.

THR reports that the Deadwood actor has signed on for an appearance in the live-action Star Wars series' sophomore run, although details on the character he'll be playing are under wraps for the time being. The trade wonders if Olyphant will appear as an all-new character or a "returning favorite in a new guise."

Olyphant can currently be seen in horror comedy series Santa Clarita Diet. He also featured in a memorable scene in Quentin Tarantino's recent Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

Pedro Pascal is set to reprise the role of infamous bounty hunter Din Djarin, and he'll be joined by fellow season 1 returnees Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Carga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon) and, of course, "The Child." It was recently announced that Attack of The Clones actor Temuera Morrison would be suiting-up as Boba Fett, while Rosario Dawson is believed to be playing Ahsoka Tano.

All going well, The Mandalorian Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ this October. Guest directors include Alita: Battle Angel’s Robert Rodriguez and Ant-Man’s Peyton Reed.

Tell us, do you think Olyphant will be playing an established character from the galaxy far, far away? Let us know in the comments.

Big fan of Tim, but Star Wars seems like such a weird fit for him. I could see him as a bounty hunter or a smuggler though.

@CurlyBill - I would’ve said the same thing about Bill Burr by that worked out fine

@CurlyBill - The whole reason Harrison Ford works so well in the Original Trilogy is how much of a sore thumb he feels in that universe. Ford/Solo seems fed up with all of the dumb puppets and monsters and politics half the time, and it works so well.

Part of what broke Star Wars (I think) was having so many actors come in with reverence for the material and the legacy and Lucas in a way that made it impossible for characters to wink at the audience about how ridiculous the whole franchise is when it takes itself so damn seriously.

Olyphant feels like he'd be exactly the right kind of tongue in cheek for this universe. (Sedaris was an attempt at that, I think, but not the right tone.)

Oh, good point. He was fantastic!

@Spock0Clock - That's a fair point about Harrison Ford. I just think since Diseny has acquired Star Wars there casting choices have been very weird. Seeing people like Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, and Laura Dern in Star Wars just feels strange to me.

@CurlyBill - I think the Disney era just has so many celebs who want to be a part of the franchise, even if it's just a minor role. While I don't think any of them have been bad (but Del Toro is the one that felt most off to me), it does take me out of the story when you see an underwritten character played by a big actor.

And I don't think that's going to change, for good or ill. The Disney-era Lucasfilm is a shoulder-rubbing tinsel-towny affair. Kennedy is a hobnobber, Favreau is a hobnobber, Filoni seems eager to join the ranks of Hollywood goldenboy status (and deserves it), Sarah Finn is a brilliant casting director, but she doesn't seem to have a taste for complete unknowns in even modest roles.

Star Wars looks like it's going to be star-studded from now on, which is... fine, I guess. I'm definitely not complaining when we're getting people like Olyphant and Dawson.

@CurlyBill - I don't know why I just realized that was Laura Fern in TLJ. The hell is wrong with me lol

@Spock0Clock - You’re right, his Solo always seemed disenfranchised with the events surrounding him

@Spock0Clock - I would prefer unknowns vs. “stars” for but parts as well as most of the larger roles. Del Toro, who I enjoy in other films, seemed very odd in his SW appearance.

@CurlyBill - he’d be a great voiceover for an alien or droid.

This is a huge get either way.

@CurlyBill - I mean, they got Carl Weathers to work. Why not Oliphant? He’s perfect, and proven, in a Western style setting.

Wonder what Rebels/Clone Wars character it will be this time
Cad Bane, Kallus,

@dracula - Oliphant as the voice of Cad Bane???

Sign me up.

@thewanderer - Was mostly joking, but yeah I could see Oliphant playing Cad Bane, although if it were just a voice, id expect them to get the voice actor

This is awesome!!! Been a huge fan of his for years and now that he’s joining the Star Wars Family, most importantly The Mandalorian Family has me overly excited. I hope he’s gonna be a Mandalorian or even better if he’s Dash Rendar or Kyle Katarn!
🤩👍🙌

@AnthonyVonGeek - All good fan castings, but he definitely fits the western ascetic they are going with in the show. Either way I’m pumped to have him on the show.
