Venom: Let There Be Carnage will see Andy Serkis take over from Ruben Fleischer as director, but it's now come to light that the sequel also had a new writer working on the story alongside credited scribe Kelly Marcel: Tom Hardy!
In addition to reprising his role as Eddie Brock, Hardy will receive his first ever "Story By" credit on the film - although it doesn't sound like this will be the first time the actor has contributed to a screenplay.
“This is new for him, to get credit,” Marcel tells Empire Magazine. "But it’s not new for him to be this involved. He’s absolutely 100 per cent committed to everything that he does. He’s married to Venom. He loves this character. He’s very involved in what he thinks should happen.”
Though Hardy didn't actually put pen to paper, Marcel reveals that they hashed out the backbone of the story together and came up with lots of ideas before she began writing the script.
“We spent months breaking the story together on FaceTime, riffing on ideas, seeing what worked, seeing what didn’t. Then I took everything we spoke about and holed up somewhere for three months quietly, knocking out a script.”
As the title suggests, the Sony Pictures sequel will see Venom go fang-to-fang with his arch-nemesis from the comics, Carnage. The first movie proved to be highly divisive, but many fans are likely to give Let There Be Carnage a chance just to witness that long-awaited battle on the big screen.
Michelle Williams and Reid Scott are also set to reprise their roles from Venom, and they'll be Joined by Naomie Harris as the villainous Shriek, and Stephen Graham as an unnamed copper (he can be glimpsed in the trailer reading the Daily Bugle). Sean Delaney, Laurence Spellman, and Larry Olubamiwo are also on board in undisclosed roles.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set for release on September 24. Let us know if you're looking forward to the movie in the comments, and check out the first trailer below.
