In 10 days, fans of superhero role-playing games won’t need to shell out $50 to $60 for DC Universe Online on PC or Playstation 3. Champions Online, a multi-player game that first came out in September 2009, will be free to play Jan. 25.
Game-maker Cryptic will no longer charge mandatory monthly subscriptions but will instead offering a tiered membership program with an online ship for extra costumes, character slots and extra missions. Gold memberships costing $15 a month, matching DC Universe Online’s standard fee, allows players to have access to all of the extras on a complimentary basis.
More information can be found at Champions-Online.com.

I played Champions in RPG form with dice and everything... Any of you kids remember when you actually saw your friends with your own eyes to play games? This should be cool though.

They announced this the same day that DC Universe Online hit retailers... There's several reasons to go free-to-play (they apparently have the most revenue per player, easy upsell, etc), but I think it was to keep from losing players...

I put the full press release from Atary and Cryptic Studios up yesterday on my other site for anyone that's interested.

City of Heroes will always be number one. I mean, it's had such a head start that there's simply no way that DCUO or Champions can compete.

Been playing City of Heroes for years. I tried Champions . . . and it just didn't match up. Not enough content, and you pretty much had to play a blaster or a blaster or a blaster. I didn't like teaming generally and found it difficult.

Champions does some things very well . . . the costume creator is good, and the ability to customize powers. The environment can be used . . . you can throw cars.

The game was clearly designed to be played on a console as well as a PC . . . and then they cancelled the Console version. Generally, a game going Free-2-Play is a bad sign -- it means they are struggling to get new and returning players.

Lots of folks from City of Heroes tried out Champions . . . and then went back to City of Heroes.

@Grimm - I LOVED Champions as the old style dice RPG! Best gaming system out there. HERO ruled! I played City of Heroes years ago, and it was just too repetitious. I hope it has gotten better. Still, a tiered system would work well. I enjoyed Guild Wars (apparently 2 is coming out or is already out, not sure) which was a no monthly fee game. The best MMO IMO is still Eve Online.
