@blackandyellow - The sad thing is that I'm actually looking forward to big brother coming down on the video games industry...

I mean, would it be great if the government could keep their hands off of the industry, and allow it to regulate itself? Yes, I would be all for that... Except for the fact that in recent times they've proven that they're putting profit over the experience.

Now, I know gaming is a business, and it's supposed to make money (I have not problem with that). It's just like how you've mentioned in your post with the scummy practices of lootboxes, and microtransactions... Even day one DLC which isn't bad compared to the other greedy practices that they have done (and possibly will do), but it's up there in terms of being bad for the industry.

The only reason why they're able to get away with it is because as you said, our laws are antiquated, and these companies weasel their way around it... I could go on, but I would be rambling at this point (actually deleted a whole paragraph cause I started going off more than I needed to =P).

@LEVITIKUZ - Remember the Kinect drama back in 2013?There were claims the Kinect would stay on 24h and the NSA had access to every Xbox,the Kinect had a heatweave cam and a "X-ray cam" that sometimes would be able to see through your clothes(the Xbox can see your weiner)

@blackandyellow - I can definitely see something happening with loot crates and pay to win platforms that a lot of games exploit. Part of the issue is kids play the majority of these games and when signing up for new accounts on X-Box, iTunes/Apple, Facebook, Android, etc is how you need to enter a valid credit card. It doesn't bill it immediately but being that there is one linked to every account without you being able to remove it entirely is an issue because kids then charge up their parents cards without them realizing until the bill comes in. There are some slight protections but not enough. I know I had my iTunes CC expire not long ago and I couldn't update my apps until I put in a new one. The apps I was updating were completely free though so there shouldn't have been the need to have updated billing info. You hear more and more about kids who are wracking up thousands on their parents CC's though and they have a right to dispute charges since they weren't authorized, technically. So the vendors are losing money because Visa will kick it back to the consumer/customer. That is just the tip of the iceberg but I suspect that will be or has been one of the issues that is getting the government to step in. Once they start looking they'll see a ton of problems much bigger than that and launch a full scale investigation. It won't end well for developers and even though I'm fine with them getting screwed in a way, I also realize they won't feel the brunt of it because the bigger companies will pass it on down to the consumer and the smaller companies will fold.
