For those who don't know. CONSOLE WARS by Blake Harris is a book that is due to be published in 2014. According to info the book is "a riveting behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.".It will be released in August 2014

Already Sony Pictures are planning to adapt the big to the big screen. Scott Rudin (Moneyball, The Social Network) is devloping the movie as a feature film to be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Knocked Up, Superbad). There will also be a doccumentry on the same subject handled by the same team.

Synopsis:

Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars—a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.

In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

So what do you guys think, do you think this is a good idea for a movie?

It still saddens me Sega doesn't make consoles anymore. My favorite system from them was the Saturn. Sadly though most of the best games are only in Japan. So if you want to play them you have mod your console. But that's what you had to do. The Panzer Dragoon series was great. I wish Sega never lost the source code to Panzer Dragoon Saga. Sega had many bad problems like misplacing their source code. They made a lot of errors like the Sega CD & Sega 32X. Plus also how they handled the Saturn.

I would love to see another movie based on consoles come to life. That would be the Masters of Doom. It's an interesting read about Id Software. Think along the social Network but for gamers instead.

I really think this could be a great film. Who doesn't know the bitter history between Sega and Nintendo. The famous line " Sega does what Nintendo don't". People talk about the console wars between Sony and Microsoft but those two have nothing on Sega and Nintendo. They would do things to sabotage the other system. It should make for a very interesting movie. So I can't wait to watch this.

@AnnoDomini -

did you just bash the Amazing Spider-man in a thread about video game consoles??? okay not sure if that was to be a joke or not but made me laugh at the randomness. well done.

So this will be like The Social Network, but instead of being about Facebook it will be about video game companies?

I want to know when Sega will make Shenmue III. They should do a kickstarter campaign for it.

I still remember having to choose which version of Mortal Kombat to buy. The Genesis version had the blood, but the SNES version (which substituted sweat for blood) had the better graphics. I went with the Genesis version because it was more faithful to the arcade.

Iwas always loyal to Sega, myself. My main 8-Bit machines were the Sinclair ZX Spectrum computers (the +2 64k and the +2A 128k), but the first 8-Bit console I got was the Master System. I would always get the Nintendos (NES and SNES/Super Famicom), when they had come down to silly-low prices (as in the price of a game, from a car-boot sale and such).
I had a Mega Drive (Genesis) and two Mega Drive IIs (I wore one out by playing it too much), during the 16 bit age, and a Sega Saturn during the 32 Bit era. I absolutely refused to get a Sony Playstation.
It was a much more friendly war between Nintendo and Sega, as they were at least both in it for real. But Sony coming along and claiming the video game market was just despicable.
So it is kinda bittersweet that it is Sony making this movie. And from the folks that gave us that propaganda Facebook crap. Hmmm. Methinks a Wreck-It-Ralph style mash-up VS. movie could've been better.
But it is at least intriguing that there are a lot of business-movie mythmaking going on. That's interesting.
