We recently learned that MGM lost the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise after failing to get cameras rolling on a sequel. Now, Alicia Vikander is no longer set to continue playing Lara Croft as a bidding war ensues among studios for the right to reboot the video game property. While there's no word on who will be the new face of the franchise, we do know Vikander won't reprise the role.
As you may have heard, Parcs and Recreation and Legion star Aubrey Plaza recently appeared on The Tonight Show and recalled filmmaker Edgar Wright mistakenly believing she had been cast as the new Tomb Raider after seeing a shot of her in Emily the Criminal.
Well, the actor has since spoken to Newsweek (via ActioNewz.com) and revealed that she's 100% open to the idea of being the next Lara Croft. "Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it. It was so funny when [Wright] texted me that because I didn't realize how strikingly similar those photos are."
"Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster; those are very different," she recalled. "It's very weird and totally accidental, but I'll take it."
"I love action movies, and I don't discriminate against big movies or small movies," Plaza continued. "I love all kinds of movies. I would love it if somehow that turned into a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. That's an iconic character. She's the original badass."
While Plaza would be an unexpected choice, we have to believe she could also be an awesome onel. It's too soon to say who will be cast as the iconic adventurer, of course, but if this actor isn't on the radar of at least a few of those studios, then we can't help but think it would be a major missed opportunity.
