Among the news surrounding Marvel's newest MMO video game, Marvel Universe Online, were in fact that comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis was helmed to write the script, that the game would allow players to use the actual Marvel characters in game and, most surprisingly, that the game will be free to play.

Bendis also adds “The reason that I was so desperate to be a part of this is that I’m a big believer that the Marvel universe is more than just this fantasy universe, it’s kind of a lifestyle for a lot of people. It reminds me of what Stan Lee did in the 60’s by making the audience part of Marvel".

Bendis also revealed that the gameplay, would allow players to play as actual Marvel characters, walking through the big events of the Marvel Universe from the classic 60’s comics and through every era of Marvel history. So far, the playable characters confirmed to make an appearance are Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Squirrel Girl and Nova.

Gazillion Entertainment also said that, unlike SHSO (Super Hero Squad Online) which is aimed at a younger audience, Marvel Universe has a core gamer focus. There will be no subscription cost, instead opting for a free-to-play model, and will launch on PC with "other platforms to be announced." They did not say whether Marvel Universe would be web browser-based like Superhero Squad Online or would require a client download like most other MMOs.

@Superman17

If you're trying to imply something, Marvel had already announced an MMO called "Marvel Universe Online" a few years before DCUO was announced. The project ultimately got cancelled. Here's the trailer for it.

I don't get this because what if we have 50 spider-mans zinging around? That just seems a little weird

CG21 They did cancel it at first because of disputes between Microsoft and licensing of the Marvel characters, but Gazillion Entertainment acquired the rights instead, so its in production

This is crap. its Marvel Ultimate Alliance Online. Its an adult version of Super Hero Squad. Its next best trainwreck. If they want f2p just make it set powers with microtransaction or just do it $15/m like everyone else just don't fail. Your starting off saying we fail Day #1.

good news, but lets not forget that DCUO started out as a free to play game, then later became subscription, hopefully this wont happen again

@The14thAvenger I heard otherwise, I head that is was always going to follow a subscription model.

Interesting, an "old" project gets revived after it's own version of development hell... free to play "would" be nice as well.. however, for some who may have never heard of the original idea prior to DCUO would probably think they're just cashing in on an idea DCUO "started" in their frame of mind... in which they would probably ultimately NOT have players access to the core characters but either be mentored by them like DCUO or fight against them as you level up your own personally created avatar in the Marvel Universe playground.

If this does get off the ground, I wish they would enlarge the scope of the game to include outer space missions/quests that would allow you to run into characters like the Shi'ar, Galactus, a revived Nova Corps, etc.

Play as the Marvel heroes? So everyone is going to be running around as a clone? Uniqueness is part of the whole immersion. Interacting with the icons and battling against them pulls the player in. If everyone can play as them it takes the special aspect of the world away. It would be one thing if this was a console game, but for an MMO? Really?

Plus, free to play? There's only a couple of options of how this could work out... They never develop anything new and do not provide any type of bug fixes or customer support... They fund their updates with ADs which would be absolutely everywhere and will ALSO take away from the game experience... Or, they sell specific in game items to fund their staff and all other aspects of the game, which means that you won't reach the top by skill, but by how much money you are willing to invest and pour into the game.

Sorry, but this sounds extremely fail...

The Game play is supposed to be separated into individual rooms.

If you are Captain America, You will be the only Captain America in that room.

Think of it as pre-selecting a character and then being brought into a room with other players like call of duty.

Once in there you will each be a different hero.

It will probably have modes like "Call Of Duty"
a team vs.
Team Objective,
Free for all Battle,
and free Roam.

This was there original intention and is the only logical way to do F2P. With DLC galore.

@ThaMessenger

So how does that work when you have a thousand people wanting to play Spider-man and Wolverine and no one who wants to play Jubilee? Does everyone get to play the character they want or do they have to settle for some subpar character because otherwise there won't be enough people in their "room" to play with? Who wants to be Daredevil when you could be Thor? There's some major issues with this line of thinking.

sounds cool that its free to play as i'm currently paying for dc universe online which thanks to the sony hack i can't play.

-create a character is a must feature

-joining groups or factions are a must i.e nova corps, masters of evil, hydra, shield, avengers or the x-men.

hell yes! the whole reason I wont buy DCUO is because of the subscription charges, why should I pay for the game itself, then pay even more to play it? Good on Marvel!
and yeah, everything marvel72 said above ^ is a must!

If you get the chance, please check out my X-Men Origins Magneto fan fic!

And I hope it has a much more sophisticated level of gameplay than Ultimate Alliance 2, I bought that thinking it would be great but I cant stand it.
As for create a character, as long as you can choose their powers (and/or weapons) and FULLY customise their costumes (even if some costume components are released as DLC) then it'd be even better (maybe to balance it out, instead of having difficulty settings, the amount of powers you use determines the difficulty, ie more powers means easy mode and less points, less powers means hard mode and more points)
and since its online, you should be able to enter conversations using headsets, or just be able to talk during game play missions.

This game just wreaks of fail.
1. No customization ( That mean 20 Spidermen in one general area)
2. Gazillion( This is a horrible developing company from what I have been told)
3. Its FREE ( People who are complaining about DCUO having fee just dont get MMO's. In order for this to work there has to be some fee. Look at other MMO's such as World of Warcraft. Paying is the key to having a nice fluid game experience with around 100 people per server.)
They should just bring back Ultimate Alliance. By far the best Marvel videogame to date.

If theyre doing that kind of idea hopefully it be like this f2p game called Vindictus.. its the best f2p out there

check out the vid with 1080 to get how amazing graphics and gameplay..

Indestruktible - 4/29/2011, 3:24 PM
@nuck82 you actually can not use any of the DC characters in DCUO. You create your own character and there's quite a bit of customization so you don't have that problem of the 50 swinging identical spider-mans.

@ Sledge yes I completely agree with what you said. People don't like monthly payment but that's probably the fairest way to ensure it's actually a quality product. Without it, no new missions are created, no patching, tons of ads everywhere, it's horrible. There are already many free MMO's out there but it's terrible.

Until we get more info, it doesn't sound so good.

Crap fails, there is a reason that City of Heroes was so successful, you get to make and name your own Super Hero, how cool is that?!

The original pitch for MUO became Champions Online, which isn't a bad game for f2p.

OT: I knew they'd go with free to play, they're going to grab all the people who would be playing DCUO if it was free.
Look at my username... I would be playing DCUO if it was free.
But now I'm going to be playing Marvel instead, woot... I'm gonna be the Silver Surfer!

I predict DCUO will go f2p after Marvel launches this baby. It's win win for all of us.

@RamonSuarez

I don't even play DCUO. I did (and it's good but certainly not without it's issues) but that has nothing to do with why this game sounds like crap. We've given legitimate reasons why there's great cause for concern, and all you can do is attempt to take shelter beneath your delusion that the only reason people are already snubbing their noses at this game is because they are DC fanboys who want anything Marvel to fail?

Keep your head buried in the sand all you want... Some of us actually want to use ours...

Not all f2ps are bad.. Just saying and there games f2p games with character/gender locks yet still are great just like Vindictus and yes its not point&click as well.. check the game out and see why is the best f2p out there better than champions or w/e
gurugeorge
gurugeorge - 4/29/2011, 5:14 PM
Seconding what Superbatprime says. The original shot at MUO is what eventually became Champions Online, which is f2p and a decent (although not stellar) MMO - better than DCUO in some ways (e.g. f2p enables you to play fixed Archetype superheroes, but if you subscribe to CO you can create a "Freeform" superhero with almost any combination of powers you like), not as good in others (e.g. probably not as good graphics-wise, although CO isn't exactly bad). CO isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's well worth a shot for anyone into superheroes and most people get at least a month or two's fun out of it.
